In the 1950s and 1960s, Europe was a popular migration destination for Turkish people due to its employment opportunities. Today, however, these labor market drivers of migration destinations in the EU-28 have been superseded. This article empirically investigates the drivers of the migration destinations of Turkish newcomers to EU countries between 2008–2018. It contributes to the literature by focusing only on Turkish newcomers, whereas other studies rely on migration stock data. Using data provided by the OECD, Eurostat, and the World Bank, the findings show that security-based and social drivers mostly attract Turkish newcomers to EU-28 destinations, specifically a demand for democracy and social networks.

A significant number of migrants return to their home country every year, and these returnees with migration experience join the labour force. This study investigates the effect of migration experience on labour income applying regression analysis to data from the Household Labour Force Surveys of Turkey from 2009 to 2018. The findings confirm that migration experience has a positive impact on labour income in Turkey. Furthermore, the returnees earn more than the overall wage earners with the same education and skill levels. Additional findings show that women in Turkey earn less than men across all wage earners in the average, but that migration experience does not close the earnings gap between female and male returnees. Nevertheless, highly-educated and upskilled returnees contribute more to the economic growth of Turkey; so, the returnees are labour capital gains to improve the home country economy.

Thousands of Turkish returnees (re)join the labour force of Turkey each year. Despite the gender pay gap, women return with new skills, which increase the chance of earning higher wages before the migration. Adopting a gender perspective, this paper investigates the effects of migration experience on labour income. The findings show that the positive effect of migration experience weakens the negative effect of gender on labour income, and marriage positively affects women’s labour income.

This study aims to explore the motivations behind people's decision to migrate and to where: What are the motivations of immigrants to migrate to Seville? We use data from several resources for the empirical analysis and the field study relies on the survey which is made with immigrants living in Seville. It concludes that security, economic, social and geographic conditions of the origin country can be the main determinants of the migration decision and the migration destination.

Turkish immigrants are a growing part of the US labour market. This article explores the employment status and labour income determinants of the Turkish immigrants in the US between 2000 and 2019, using data from the American Community Survey and comparing them with other immigrants. The estimation findings show that gender, age, marital status, English level, citizenship status, education level, occupation, and years spent in the US are significant determinants of the employment status and labour income of immigrants in the US. Although Turkish immigrants earn more on average than other immigrants, once other factors (such as gender, age, education level, years spent in the US, citizenship status, proficiency in English, and occupation) are taken into account, the regression analysis demonstrates that some Turkish immigrants earn exceptionally high salaries in the US; in contrast, the remainder earn average or below-average amounts.
