Supply chain risk management (SCRM) is imperative to achieve business sustainability in the long-term perspective and also to increase companies’ competitiveness. ISO 31000—Risk Management explains in its latest versions the need for companies to integrate a risk management process into their business models. Complementary to this standard, ISO 31010 presents 31 risk tools to guide companies in this task. However, a question of practical application arises as to which tools should be used for each stage of the SCRM process. In view of the raised question, the main objective of this research is to select ISO 31010 tools that can be used in each of the stages (identify, analyze, and evaluate) of the risk management of the import and export process of an automotive industry located in Brazil. For this, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP method) was used in a case study to prioritize the tools to compose the SCRM. As practical implications, this study resulted in the suggestion of a structured risk management process, considering the assessment of key professionals of the department studied in the company.

Initiatives related to reverse logistics are increasingly common in companies that produce tires, lubricating oils, batteries, and electronic equipment, among others. In the pharmaceutical sector, reverse logistics is also relevant, contributing to reduce medication exposure to other people and the environment. Thus, this research seeks to find out which practices related to reverse logistics are used in 13 hospitals in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Regarding the methodological procedures, this research is supported by interviews with those responsible for disposing of medicines from hospitals, and the best practices were ranked using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. Among the main difficulties for performing Medicine Reverse Logistics practices in hospitals, the absence of a standard process for medicine disposal and medications held by nurses or satellite pharmacies—for being out of control—stand out.

Since few articles address risk issues related to solid waste management, although it is evident that waste management is not immune to risks, the present research aims to analyze the risk management process in programming and loading of solid waste from a company in the steel sector, based on the ISO 31000. Methodologically, the research was supported by a case study, that applied documentary research, direct observation and semi-structured interviews with professionals with extensive experience. As main results, it was observed that the risk identification stage pointed out the “bad segregation or contamination of the waste” as the risk with the greatest potential impact on the operations, since in the event of its occurrence, it may compromise a relevant percentage of the company’s revenue with co-products from the sale of solid waste, in addition to environmental impacts through the release of a wide variety of polluting products, endangering human health and biodiversity. As a main conclusion, it is observed that the risk management process applied to the reverse logistics of steel residues has the ability to organize proactive actions so that risks are identified, analyzed and evaluated, minimizing their occurrence and promoting risk mitigation actions.

There is a vast amount of literature on relations between air transport activities and economic growth. The recognition that these are important relationships has aroused the interest of researchers, who have studied them with regard to remote towns. The empirical studies have concentrated more on developed areas, such as Europe, North America, and Australia. No empirical studies were found for Brazil, which holds most of the Amazon region. In this study, the Granger causality method was used to investigate for causal relationships between regular domestic air passenger transport links and the gross domestic product of small municipalities in this region. The results indicate short- and long-term, two-way causality in which gross domestic product has a stronger impact on air transport than vice versa.

This paper examines the impact of air transport on tourism-related employment in Brazil, one of the largest economies of the world, where both industries are operating well below their potential. Job creation in typical tourist industry activities in response to innovations in passenger air transport is a paramount indicator for both the tourism and air transport industries. The discussion here is supported by the time series analysis and Granger causality methodologies. The results show that air transport activity cointegrates with employment in tourism and has substantial impact on both its long- and short-term composition. Although employment shows higher elasticity to international than to domestic air movement, the latter is considered the main driver of employment. In three years, the accumulated potential response by employment in tourism to innovations in domestic air transport was 50% and accumulated percentage variance, 56%. The results indicate that Brazilian policymakers must consider domestic air transport as a key factor for sustainable employment in the tourism industry.

Social sustainability is a dimension of the concept of sustainability that has gained importance only in the last few decades and can be identified as the pursuit and measure of social equity. Equity can be analyzed under two approaches: horizontal and vertical. The horizontal approach considers the distribution of benefits equally, while the vertical equity considers these same benefits, but between specific groups, which is an adequate approach when dealing with policy-related topics, such as tariff subsidy. Accessibility is a factor that contributes to urban social sustainability and it may be a representation of physical and/or social barriers in the urban environment. Thus, this paper aims to assess social sustainability under a vertical equity approach, based on accessibility to jobs, for different population groups, comparing public with individual motorized transport. The case study was carried out in Medellín-Colombia, using data from the 2017 Home Destination Survey. It was found that users of individual transport have access to a greater number of jobs than users of public transport. In addition, those with higher income have better accessibility than those with lower income, even though they are not beneficiaries of tariff subsidy policies. Another highlight is that areas closer to the central region are also more accessible. In some specific communes, it would be indicated to seek to improve access through public transport, or the implementation of some public policy at the municipal level that could have an impact on access to opportunities.

The literature, aimed at understanding the income–price elasticity of air passenger demand, bases its analysis on airport movement. The diversity of studies regarding the casualty between air transportation and economic growth are examples. Some studies covering this link, estimate the income–price relationship with the demand considering international traffic. Considering a domestic setting, where this traffic is significant in Brazil, studies related to remote regions are scarce, and the existing ones focus on governmental policies and subsidies. In addition, empirical studies on the theme consenter themselves in developed regions, such as Europe, North America, and Australia. For Brazil, where we find the Amazon region, there is no empirical research. This paper analyses the price–income elasticity of the demand regarding domestic passengers in air links from remote cities of the Brazilian Amazon. This study uses panel data regression analysis method on a database of domestic scheduled flights of Brazil´s National Civil Aviation Agency. The results show that air passengers involving remote region flights present a lower sensitivity regarding local income and an airline´s price variations than those in flights among capitals. The higher difference is in the income elasticity of the remote city of origin, which is lower than that of the air traffic among capitals.

Resilience is the ability of a system to adapt, persist, and transform as a reaction to threats, which may be external or internal to the system, while vulnerability is the state of being susceptible to harm from exposure to stresses associated with environmental and social change and from the inability to adapt. Based on a study of the threats that can affect urban mobility, we identified a gap regarding the analysis of the levels of resilience and vulnerability in the face of subsidy threats that can severely affect developing countries. This article measures the level of resilience and vulnerability due to the absence of public transport fare subsidies. For this purpose, we developed an approach based on fuzzy logic and applied it in 33 administrative regions (ARs) of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We obtained four matrices of the levels of vulnerability and resilience of each of the regions as an origin and destination. The results show that areas nearest to the downtown region and those with high-capacity transportation available (commuter train and/or subway, systems with many transfer points) are more resilient, while a high level of vulnerability is associated with low income, negative socioeconomic indicators, and the predominance of road transportation to reach jobs. The contribution of this paper is the method applied to analyse the levels of vulnerability and resilience of public transport, which includes a threat that can cause a rupture that impacts routines and job accessibility in a region.

The global network analysis (GNA) is adapted to a domestic air network analysis (DANA), in order to identify structural changes of the air network of Brazil, with a regional perspective of the country. The networkability of airports involves the measurement of traditional indicators of the GNA, such as connectivity and local centrality. Furthermore, this paper proposes a regional analysis of the hierarchy of airports, by identifying economic factors related to the structural changes of the air network. In addition to a descriptive analysis of networkability and Gross Domestic Product (GDP), this study applies Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Malmquist methods in order to evaluate the efficiency change based on Networkability and GDP by municipality and region. The reached results show that, although airports of the Southeast region are evidently more important in terms of air flows and amount of connections, there is a slight decentralization of air flows and connection to the Midwest and Northeast regions of the country, proven by the increasing networkability of airports and regional economic changes, leading to hierarchical position change of airports in these regions and a structural change of the air network.

Long-term scenarios for mobility within cities usually neglect the energy supply challenge and how the implied risks affect urban mobility services. High levels of private transport and fossil fuel dependency tend to prevail in urban agglomerations of modern cities in many parts of the world. The resilience approach supports a new perspective on transportation solutions, not only based on how to consume less energy or emit less CO2, but how vulnerable urban mobility is in face of a fossil threat. This paper aims to assess the vulnerability of urban mobility in the face of fossil fuel threats under a social and geographical scope. We apply a case study with the city of Rio de Janeiro, confronting city inhabitants with a price increase of gasoline and oil-based public transportation. We found that more than 50% of the districts of Rio de Janeiro presents low-medium or low level of resilience of urban mobility. Furthermore, they are in areas with lower accessibility to metro stations and more citizens with reduced income levels.

This paper examines the causality between tourism openness (TOOP), trade openness (TROP), and currency‐purchasing power (BRPP) in Brazil and measures the future impact of innovations. Johansen cointegration tests and vector error correction estimates support the hypothesis that there is short‐run and long‐run, one‐way Granger causality from TROP and BRPP to TOOP. Variance decomposition analysis shows a peak percent TOOP variance of 51% due to BRPP and TROP. BRPP shows as the main precedent variable to be observed for tourism planning. The analysis indicates that policymakers must consider BRPP and TROP in setting objectives for Brazilian tourism.
