The continuous upsurge in worldwide economic development and human activities has intensified CO2 emissions that highlighted the significant role of eco-innovation and green investment in curbing CO2 emissions. The study aims to explore the impact of eco-innovation and green investment on CO2 emissions by using the China dataset for time period 1990–2019. The study adopts the ARDL approach. The study used two proxies to determine the impact of eco-innovation, namely environment-related technologies and patents. The empirical estimates of the ARDL approach confirm the negative impact of eco-innovation and green investment on CO2 emissions confirming that these determinants result in limiting CO2 emissions in China. Based on these findings, the study suggests strengthening environmentally friendly policies and the advancement of green investment to mitigate CO2 emissions.

Forest fires in Indonesia continue to pose as an alarming governmental, environmental, and societal concern. This study examines the context of land ownership transformation mainly before and after forest fires in palm oil plantation activities. The data were gathered through in-depth interviews, observation, and Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping. The majority of land transformations occurred from community property ownership to ownership by local elites, while the transformation from company to community and local elites was also found. Due to the injustice of land distribution, local communities occupy open access lands of companies’ concessions. The deliberate use of fire is a common method among smallholder to clear land for oil palm and for sold for profit as planted land. Local elites benefit from these land transformations; however, smallholders are at an economic disadvantage. We argue that forest devolution and a clear definition of community land boundaries are critical in dealing with this issue.

Background: Concern for the development of actions against COVID-19 has continued to grow since February 2020. Government responses remain a crucial part of preventing virus transmission through policy formulation and strengthening national capacity. Methods: This study has used quantitative analysis, using secondary data from 177 countries. The variables consist of Global Health Security (GHS) category and COVID-19 pandemic. An analysis of the appropriateness of the government’s policy response in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic was carried out by comparing the two variables. Results: The study indicated a significant relationship between global health security category and pandemic score (P < 0.01). There were 37 countries out of 177 (20.9%) categorized as under-reaction and least-reaction. Conclusion: Pandemic COVID-19 score, rated based on doubling time, is directly significant with the health security category. The government should improve its responsiveness and preparation to improve national capacity during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Abstract Abstract This research will focus on analyzing the effectiveness of the waste bank as an alternative to waste management in achieving the concept of smart city in Kulon Progo Regency. The research was conducted to describe how the existence of a garbage bank in Kulon Progo Regency and to analyze how the effectiveness of the waste bank in managing waste in achieving the concept of smart city. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive analysis approach. The researcher uses descriptive analysis method, which is an analysis that is intended to explain data from one variable under study. From the research results obtained information that the existence of a garbage bank is experiencing good development because up to 2019 there have been 116 garbage banks. While the effectiveness of the garbage bank has so far been seen to be less effective because it has only been able to manage 10% of the waste generated. Indeed, waste banks make sprouts of economic value and provide benefits to waste producers but have not overcome the problem of waste. So that the concept of smart city on environmental indicators is still not well achieved by the existence of a garbage bank. Keywords: garbage, smart city, waste management, garbage bank

Indonesia has sustained annual forest fires since the 1990s related to land clearing activities for agriculture. The Indonesian Government has made substantial efforts to resolve annual fires by improving intergovernmental coordination at national and local levels. Overall, 96 government agencies are liable for controlling forest fire. This study explores local to central government’s bureaucratic reluctance in addressing forest fires, focusing on Riau Province, the most forest fire-prone region in Indonesia. Data were collected from 2015 to 2019 using participatory observation, engaging in meetings of key players; in-depth interviews with key heads of relevant agencies, officials, and NGOs; and a questionnaire for Social Network Analysis. The results show that there are seven influential institutions for addressing land and forest fires in Riau. However, the power of the decision-making process is concentrated at the level of the President and the Governor as the regional leader, which implies that large institutions involved in fire response have less power and responsibility owing in part to bureaucratic inertia as bureaucracy is overly centralised and less responsive. In the long term, devolution of government authority from the central to the local level is required to furnish front-line institutions with the power to deal with the fires.
