There are few network resources in wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs). Compressing media data can reduce the reliance of user’s Quality of Experience (QoE) on network resources. Existing video coding software, such as H.264 and H.265, focuses only on spatial and short-term information redundancy. However, video usually contains redundancy over a long period of time. Therefore, compressing video information redundancy with a long period of time without compromising the user experience and adaptive delivery is a challenge in WMSNs. In this paper, a semantic-aware super-resolution transmission for adaptive video streaming system (SASRT) for WMSNs is presented. In the SASRT, some deep learning algorithms are used to extract video semantic information and enrich the video quality. On the multimedia sensor, different bit-rate semantic information and video data are encoded and uploaded to user. Semantic information can also be identified on the user side, further reducing the amount of data that needs to be transferred. However, identifying semantic information on the user side may increase the computational cost of the user side. On the user side, video quality is enriched with super-resolution technologies. The major challenges faced by SASRT include where the semantic information is identified, how to choose the bit rates of semantic and video information, and how network resources should be allocated to video and semantic information. The optimization problem is formulated as a complexity-constrained nonlinear NP-hard problem. Three adaptive strategies and a heuristic algorithm are proposed to solve the optimization problem. Simulation results demonstrate that SASRT can compress video information redundancy with a long period of time effectively and enrich the user experience with limited network resources while simultaneously improving the utilization of these network resources.

Deep learning (DL) models have been widely studied in the field of micro-expression recognition (MER). However, micro-expressions (MEs) suffer from small number of samples and difficulty in extracting subtle and transient features, resulting in limited improvement in the recognition performance. In addition, DL models are prone to overfitting problems and are difficult to extract discriminative features of facial actions from ME images or sequences. To address these issues, we propose a MER method that combines a nonlinear deep subspace network and optical flow features. Firstly, facial motion features are captured using optical flow computation, and then the optical flow features are input into a kernel principal component analysis network (KPCANet) to further learn deeper spatio-temporal features. Finally, a linear support vector machine (SVM) is used for ME classification. Experiments conducted on four public spontaneous ME datasets including SMIC, CASME, CASME II and SAMM validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves even better recognition performance compared to existing state-of-the-art MER methods.

In high-speed mobile scenarios characteristic of the Fifth Generation Mobile Networks (5G) environment, the user video experience may be compromised due to concurrent access by numerous users and frequent base station transitions. Addressing this issue, this study introduces a cross-layer resource allocation model that integrates environmental awareness and is tailored for the exigencies of high-speed mobile networks. The paper delves into the challenges engendered by rapid mobility and extensive user access within the 5G environment and critiques the constraints of prevalent resource allocation methodologies. The model delineated herein is conceptualized as an optimization challenge and characterized as a nonlinear, NP-hard problem. In response to this challenge, this study advocates a novel streaming media transmission algorithm underpinned by edge computing, in tandem with an environment-aware wireless resource allocation algorithm. The article articulates the foundational principles and operational modalities of these algorithms, underscoring the significance of environmental cognizance in resource distribution and the efficacy of edge computing in increasing video transmission efficiency. Empirical validation, achieved through simulation experiments, corroborates the efficacy of the proposed approach. Comparative analysis reveals that, relative to conventional methodologies, the proposed framework significantly improves video transmission quality and user experience, particularly in contexts characterized by frequent network fluctuations and high user densities. This research contributes novel insights and pragmatic solutions to optimize video transmission in existing 5G and prospective network paradigms.

Accurate remaining capacity prediction (RCP) of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is crucial for ensuring their safety, reliability, and performance, particularly amidst the growing energy crisis and environmental concerns. However, the complex aging processes of LIBs significantly hinder accurate RCP, as traditional prediction methods struggle to effectively capture nonlinear degradation patterns and long-term dependencies. To tackle these challenges, we introduce an innovative framework that combines evolutionary learning with deep learning for RCP. This framework integrates Temporal Convolutional Networks (TCNs), Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Units (BiGRUs), and an attention mechanism to extract comprehensive time-series features and improve prediction accuracy. Additionally, we introduce a hybrid optimization algorithm that combines the Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA) with Bayesian Optimization (BO) to enhance the performance of the model. The experimental results validate the superiority of our framework, demonstrating its capability to achieve significantly improved prediction accuracy compared to existing methods. This study provides researchers in battery management systems, electric vehicles, and renewable energy storage with a reliable tool for optimizing lithium-ion battery performance, enhancing system reliability, and addressing the challenges of the new energy industry.

Traffic signal failures can lead to severe accidents and citywide traffic disruptions, making their reliable operation essential. This study collected real-world data from intersection traffic signals and constructed a dataset. Based on the current data from traffic signals, the formatted pass-dot product attention-LSTM (FD-LSTM) model was proposed. The model utilizes one-dimensional convolution and max pooling for feature extraction, employs dual LSTM units to process forward and backward information, incorporates Dropout to prevent overfitting, and uses the dot-product attention mechanism to enhance the importance of key features. The model is trained using the Adam optimization algorithm. Comparative experiments demonstrate that the FD-LSTM model outperforms other models.

With the tremendous growth of video contents and mobility demands, there is a need to develop more personalized video services. Split-screen services, such as picture in picture become more and more popular. Furthermore, the user's viewing environment affects the user's quality of experience (QoE). Therefore, video transmission of split-screen services face several major challenges, such as to quantify the impact of environmental factors on user's QoE; how to assess the user's QoE of the split-screen services; how to choose the bit-rate of each video stream to maximize user's QoE of the split-screen services. To address these challenges, in the paper, an environment-aware adaptive transmission (EAAT) scheme for split-screen video streaming is first presented. Then, we introduce a mathematical model for characterizing user's QoE to be affected by environmental factors in the proposed EAAT. In the model, the QoE of user's relationship with the viewing environment is proposed. Based on the model, a problem of maximizing user's QoE is formulated, and we develop a heuristic algorithm to solve the optimization problem. In addition, we conduct various trace-bandwidth experiments to rigorously evaluate the proposed EAAT scheme in different network environments, and show that EAAT can enrich the video quality while saving network resources.
