Diet plays a crucial role in regulating individuals’ lifestyles and is closely related to health. The intake of animal-sourced foods (ASF) provides the human body with high-quality protein and various micronutrients. This study aimed to investigate whether the diversity of animal foods has a positive impact on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among residents. The data came from the Shaanxi baseline survey of the Northwest Chinese Regional Ethnic Cohort Study, which recruited more than 100 thousand participants aged 35 to 74 from five provinces between June 2018 and May 2019. A total of 39,997 participants in Shaanxi (mean age: 50 years; 64% women) were finally included in this current study. The animal source food diet diversity score (ASFDDS) was established based on the frequency of consuming pork, mutton, beef, poultry, seafood, eggs, pure milk, and yogurt. The physical component score (PCS) and mental component score (MCS), ranging from 0 to 100 on the 12-Item Short Form Survey (SF-12), were used to assess participants’ HRQoL. Better PCS/MCS was defined as scores higher than the 90th percentile. The results showed that men had a higher intake of ASF and ASFDDS than women. After adjusting for potential confounders, compared with those who never or rarely consumed animal foods, the likelihood of having better PCS and MCS increased by 16% (OR = 1.16, 95%CI: 1.01–1.34) and 24% (OR = 1.24, 95%CI: 1.03–1.448), respectively, in men with an ASFDDS ≥ 2. In women, a 34% increase (OR = l.34, 95%CI: 116–l.54) likelihood for better PCS was observed for an ASFDDS ≥ 2, but no association was observed for MCS. Increasing each specific animal source’s food intake was associated with better PCS after adjusting for all covariates. However, for MCS, positive associations were only observed in seafood consumption among men and eggs among women. Restricted cubic splines showed a substantial dose-response association between intake frequency of animal-source foods and PCS, both in men and women. The study suggests that a diverse intake of animal-sourced foods can potentially improve the HRQoL of Chinese adults.

Background: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most prevalent birth defect in recent decades. The aim of this research was to examine the association between maternal housing renovation exposure during the periconceptional period and isolated congenital heart disease (CHD) in their offspring. Methods: A multi-hospitals case-control study was conducted from six tertiary A hospitals in Xi’an, Shaanxi, Northwest China based on questionnaires and interviews to address this question. The cases included fetuses or newborns diagnosed with CHD. Controls consisted of healthy newborns without birth defects. In total, 587 cases and 1180 controls were enrolled in this study. The association between maternal periconceptional housing renovation exposure and isolated CHD for offspring was assessed by estimating odds ratios (OR) with multivariate logistic regression models. Results: After adjusting for potential confounding variables, it was found that maternal exposure to home improvement projects was associated with a higher probability of isolated CHD in offspring (adjusted OR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.34, 2.33). Additionally, the risk of the ventricular septal defect (VSD) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) for CHD types was significantly associated with maternal exposure to housing renovations (VSD: adjusted OR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.01, 2.41; PDA: adjusted OR = 2.50, 95% CI: 1.41, 4.45).Conclusions: Our study suggests that maternal exposure to housing renovation during the periconceptional period was associated with an increased risk of isolated CHD in offspring. Consequently, it would be beneficial to avoid living in a renovated home from 12 months before pregnancy through the first trimester to lower isolated CHD in infants.

The aim of the study was to investigate the association between maternal dietary iron intake during pregnancy and the gut microbiota characteristics of both the mother and neonate in a well-characterized cohort. A total of 95 mother-neonate dyads were included in our study, with basic information collected through questionnaires. A semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess maternal dietary intake during pregnancy, and maternal dietary iron intake was categorized into <20 mg/d and ≥20 mg/d groups. Fecal samples were collected from the mother in the third trimester and the neonate, allowing for assessment of the community profile and diversity of gut microbiota via 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Then, a comparison between different maternal dietary iron intake groups was conducted, adjusting for delivery mode (VD, vaginal delivery; CS, cesarean section) and other potential confounding factors. No significant differences in community profile and diversity were observed for the maternal gut microbiota in different dietary iron intake groups. In neonate fecal samples, the Shannon (P = 0.044) and Simpson (P = 0.010) diversity indices of the gut microbiota were higher in the maternal dietary iron intake ≥20 mg/d group, while Simpson diversity presented the same tendency in vaginal delivery (P = 0.041) after stratification. The relative abundance of the core genus Bifidobacterium showed a significant difference between groups (4.69 [1.19–12.77] vs. 13.98 [3.44–27.28]; P = 0.044). The abundance of Lactobacillus was different in the ≥20 mg/d group under both delivery modes (VD: beta = 2.9, w = 4.13; CS: beta = 2.77, w = 3.8). Our findings suggest that adequate dietary iron intake during pregnancy may promote beneficial bacterial colonization and increase the biodiversity of the neonate gut microbiota.

Background Although reperfusion therapy can reduce the mortality of myocardial infarction, it results in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI). The molecular mechanism by which the interferon-γ pathway affects MIRI is unclear, so we addressed this problem by mining transcriptome and single-cell sequencing data. Methods The GSE160516 and GSE83472 datasets, single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data of GSE227088 dataset and 182 interferon-γ pathway related genes (IRGs) were retrieved and incorporated into this study. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between MIRI and control samples were searched, the candidate genes were obtained by intersecting DEGs with IRGs. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis was utilized for selecting key genes from candidate genes. Moreover, key genes with significant expression and consistent trend in GSE160516 and GSE83472 datasets were selected as biomarkers. The biological functions and regulatory mechanism of biomarkers were investigated by enrichment analysis and predicting the upstream molecules targeting them. Ulteriorly, cell clusters were identified via unsupervised cluster analysis and merged into different cell types by cell annotation. Cell types in which biomarkers observably and differentially expressed were selected as crucial cell types. Finally, cell communication and pseudo-time analysis were implemented based on crucial cell types. Results Totally 34 candidate genes were searched by overlapping 1,930 DEGs with 182 IRGs. Nine key genes were singled out from candidate genes, of which Myd88 and Trp53 were significantly upregulated in the MIRI samples of GSE160516 and GSE83472 datasets, so they were identified as biomarkers. Besides, they participated in pathways such as ribosome, spliceosome and cell cycle. Myd88 might be simultaneously regulated by mmu-miR-361-3p and mmu-miR-421-3p, and Trp53 could be regulated by Abl1 and Tead2. Totally 25 cell clusters were merged into six cell types, of which three crucial cell types (cardiomyocyte, fibroblast and macrophage) could interact with each other through receptor-ligand. Pseudo-time analysis revealed states 1, 2 and 5 of macrophages might be associated with MIRI. Conclusion Two biomarkers (Myd88 and Trp53) related to IRGs in MIRI were mined, providing a reference for elucidating the mechanism of interferon-γ pathway on MIRI.
