In recent times, the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and Blockchain technologies have quickly gained pace as a new study niche in numerous collegiate and industrial sectors, notably in the healthcare sector. Recent advancements in healthcare delivery have given many patients access to advanced personalized healthcare, which has improved their well-being. The subsequent phase in healthcare is to seamlessly consolidate these emerging technologies such as IoT-assisted wearable sensor devices, AI, and Blockchain collectively. Surprisingly, owing to the rapid use of smart wearable sensors, IoT and AI-enabled technology are shifting healthcare from a conventional hub-based system to a more personalized healthcare management system (HMS). However, implementing smart sensors, advanced IoT, AI, and Blockchain technologies synchronously in HMS remains a significant challenge. Prominent and reoccurring issues such as scarcity of cost-effective and accurate smart medical sensors, unstandardized IoT system architectures, heterogeneity of connected wearable devices, the multidimensionality of data generated, and high demand for interoperability are vivid problems affecting the advancement of HMS. Hence, this survey paper presents a detailed evaluation of the application of these emerging technologies (Smart Sensor, IoT, AI, Blockchain) in HMS to better understand the progress thus far. Specifically, current studies and findings on the deployment of these emerging technologies in healthcare are investigated, as well as key enabling factors, noteworthy use cases, and successful deployments. This survey also examined essential issues that are frequently encountered by IoT-assisted wearable sensor systems, AI, and Blockchain, as well as the critical concerns that must be addressed to enhance the application of these emerging technologies in the HMS.

Phishing is a type of social web-engineering attack in cyberspace where criminals steal valuable data or information from insensitive or uninformed users of the internet. Existing countermeasures in the form of anti-phishing software and computational methods for detecting phishing activities have proven to be effective. However, new methods are deployed by hackers to thwart these countermeasures. Due to the evolving nature of phishing attacks, the need for novel and efficient countermeasures becomes crucial as the effect of phishing attacks are often fatal and disastrous. Artificial Intelligence (AI) schemes have been the cornerstone of modern countermeasures used for mitigating phishing attacks. AI-based phishing countermeasures or methods possess their shortcomings particularly the high false alarm rate and the inability to interpret how most phishing methods perform their function. This study proposed four (4) meta-learner models (AdaBoost-Extra Tree (ABET), Bagging –Extra tree (BET), Rotation Forest – Extra Tree (RoFBET) and LogitBoost-Extra Tree (LBET)) developed using the extra-tree base classifier. The proposed AI-based meta-learners were fitted on phishing website datasets (currently with the newest features) and their performances were evaluated. The models achieved a detection accuracy not lower than 97% with a drastically low false-positive rate of not more 0.028. In addition, the proposed models outperform existing ML-based models in phishing attack detection. Hence, we recommend the adoption of meta-learners when building phishing attack detection models.

Software Defect Prediction (SDP) models are built using software metrics derived from software systems. The quality of SDP models depends largely on the quality of software metrics (dataset) used to build the SDP models. High dimensionality is one of the data quality problems that affect the performance of SDP models. Feature selection (FS) is a proven method for addressing the dimensionality problem. However, the choice of FS method for SDP is still a problem, as most of the empirical studies on FS methods for SDP produce contradictory and inconsistent quality outcomes. Those FS methods behave differently due to different underlining computational characteristics. This could be due to the choices of search methods used in FS because the impact of FS depends on the choice of search method. It is hence imperative to comparatively analyze the FS methods performance based on different search methods in SDP. In this paper, four filter feature ranking (FFR) and fourteen filter feature subset selection (FSS) methods were evaluated using four different classifiers over five software defect datasets obtained from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) repository. The experimental analysis showed that the application of FS improves the predictive performance of classifiers and the performance of FS methods can vary across datasets and classifiers. In the FFR methods, Information Gain demonstrated the greatest improvements in the performance of the prediction models. In FSS methods, Consistency Feature Subset Selection based on Best First Search had the best influence on the prediction models. However, prediction models based on FFR proved to be more stable than those based on FSS methods. Hence, we conclude that FS methods improve the performance of SDP models, and that there is no single best FS method, as their performance varied according to datasets and the choice of the prediction model. However, we recommend the use of FFR methods as the prediction models based on FFR are more stable in terms of predictive performance.

As data size increases drastically, its variety also increases. Investigating such heterogeneous data is one of the most challenging tasks in information management and data analytics. The heterogeneity and decentralization of data sources affect data visualization and prediction, thereby influencing analytical results accordingly. Data harmonization (DH) corresponds to a field that unifies the representation of such a disparate nature of data. Over the years, multiple solutions have been developed to minimize the heterogeneity aspects and disparity in formats of big-data types. In this study, a systematic review of the literature was conducted to assess the state-of-the-art DH techniques. This study aimed to understand the issues faced due to heterogeneity, the need for DH and the techniques that deal with substantial heterogeneous textual datasets. The process produced 1355 articles, but among them, only 70 articles were found to be relevant through inclusion and exclusion criteria methods. The result shows that the heterogeneity of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured (SSU) data can be managed by using DH and its core techniques, such as text preprocessing, Natural Language Preprocessing (NLP), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL). These techniques are applied to many real-world applications centered on the information-retrieval domain. Several assessment criteria were implemented to measure the efficiency of these techniques, such as precision, recall, F-1, accuracy, and time. A detailed explanation of each research question, common techniques, and performance measures is also discussed. Lastly, we present readers with a detailed discussion of the existing work, contributions, and managerial and academic implications, along with the conclusion, limitations, and future research directions.

Cyber-security, as an emerging field of research, involves the development and management of techniques and technologies for protection of data, information and devices. Protection of network devices from attacks, threats and vulnerabilities both internally and externally had led to the development of ceaseless research into Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS). Therefore, an empirical study was conducted on the effectiveness of deep learning and ensemble methods in NIDS, thereby contributing to knowledge by developing a NIDS through the implementation of machine and deep-learning algorithms in various forms on recent network datasets that contains more recent attacks types and attackers’ behaviours (UNSW-NB15 dataset). This research involves the implementation of a deep-learning algorithm–Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)–and two ensemble methods (a homogeneous method–using optimised bagged Random-Forest algorithm, and a heterogeneous method–an Averaged Probability method of Voting ensemble). The heterogeneous ensemble was based on four (4) standard classifiers with different computational characteristics (Naïve Bayes, kNN, RIPPER and Decision Tree). The respective model implementations were applied on the UNSW_NB15 datasets in two forms: as a two-classed attack dataset and as a multi-attack dataset. LSTM achieved a detection accuracy rate of 80% on the two-classed attack dataset and 72% detection accuracy rate on the multi-attack dataset. The homogeneous method had an accuracy rate of 98% and 87.4% on the two-class attack dataset and the multi-attack dataset, respectively. Moreover, the heterogeneous model had 97% and 85.23% detection accuracy rate on the two-class attack dataset and the multi-attack dataset, respectively.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and wearable sensors are gradually transforming healthcare service delivery from the traditional hospital-centred model to the personal-portable-device-centred model. Studies have revealed that this transformation can provide an intelligent framework with automated solutions for clinicians to assess patients’ general health. Often, electronic systems are used to record numerous clinical records from patients. Vital sign data, which are critical clinical records are important traditional bioindicators for assessing a patient’s general physical health status and the degree of derangement happening from the baseline of the patient. The vital signs include blood pressure, body temperature, respiratory rate, and heart pulse rate. Knowing vital signs is the first critical step for any clinical evaluation, they also give clues to possible diseases and show progress towards illness recovery or deterioration. Techniques in machine learning (ML), a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI), have recently demonstrated an ability to improve analytical procedures when applied to clinical records and provide better evidence supporting clinical decisions. This literature review focuses on how researchers are exploring several benefits of embracing AI techniques and wearable sensors in tasks related to modernizing and optimizing healthcare data analyses. Likewise, challenges concerning issues associated with the use of ML and sensors in healthcare data analyses are also discussed. This review consequently highlights open research gaps and opportunities found in the literature for future studies.
