Isabella Panfoli is an Associate Professor in Biochemistry at Genoa University School of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Pharmacy (DIFAR). She is an internationally recognized expert in the area of bioenergetics, retinal photoreceptors, and neuroscience. She is a faculty member of the course of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Techniques at Genoa School of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, where she routinely lectures on Biochemistry. She is a member of various medical and scientific societies (Euretina, FISV, SIB). With her innovative research approach, she has discovered the extra-mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in the rod outer segment disks of the vertebrate retina, and is now exploiting it in other systems: recent publications include papers on the presence of extra-mitochondrial aerobic respiration in extracellular vesicles. She holds a Degree in Medicine (MD) from Genoa University School of Medicine. She also holds a degree in Architecture and Biological Sciences with the highest honors from Genoa University School of Architecture and Sciences, respectively.
