Short Biography

Vittorio Nicolosi: received a civil engineering degree as well a PhD degree in transportation engineering from University of Naples “Federico II”. He is professor in the Department of Enterprise Engineering at University of Rome “Tor Vergata” and is involved as investigator in several international research projects. Professor Nicolosi’s specialty areas include several pavement engineering and the safety and asset management of transport infrastructures sectors with a particular focus on performance indicators and optimization of management processes. He authored and co-authored more than 80 national and international scientific papers. He has been a member of numerous technical committees and working groups and leader of WG who developed the asset management manual of the world road association.

Background: Since the beginning of the new millennium, sensitivity towards the environment has been spreading globally. In fact, countries are adopting measures to develop new decision support tools that can evaluate the impact of interventions to promote and encourage sustainable mobility. To reduce the levels of pollution related to road traffic, policies that favor multimodal transport alternatives have been strengthened. This involves the combined use of public transport, cycling and walking paths, as well as sharing services where available. Regardless of the type of transport, the pedestrian component remains relevant in cities, even if the infrastructures are often not adequate to accommodate it and conflicts arise that must be managed. It is, therefore, necessary to assess the exposure to risk in terms of road safety. Methods: To this end, the work proposes a forecasting model to estimate the pedestrian flows that load the network. The methodology employs a hybrid approach that appears to better capture the movements of pedestrians. Results: By comparing the results of the model with the real data collected on the study area, satisfactory estimates were obtained. Conclusions: Therefore, this can be an effective tool to help road managers to evaluate the actions to protect vulnerable users.

In the present study, a strategy to assess liquefaction risk of road infrastructures has been proposed, as combination of liquefaction hazard, infrastructures vulnerability and exposure of transportation network. The proposed methodology includes a capacity analysis of the road network performed on both pre- and post-liquefaction scenarios to evaluate the social cost in terms of delay cost suffered by the transportation system. The approach has been applied to the municipality of Terre del Reno (Italy), that in 2012 suffered a severe seismic sequence that induced extensive liquefaction evidences over the territory. A multi-layer database, on a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) platform, has been created, with the aim to overlap information about subsoil, earthquake intensity, groundwater depth and road network configuration. The Vulnerability of road has been evaluated by the settlements of embankment on liquefied soils and, according to the damage level occurred, a loss of functionality has been assigned. Finally, performing a transportation analysis, the effects on the traffic conditions have been evaluated in terms of Total Delay Cost, suffer by the road users. Preliminary results showed a redistribution of the traffic flows caused by the service loss of crucial road sections due to the liquefaction evidences on the transportation network and the related Total Delay Cost has been quantified.

The pedestrian accounts for part of the road safety problem in most developed countries. Pedestrian accidents are thus an urgent issue for safety improvement, particularly in urban area. Furthermore, recent sustainable mobility oriented policies are boosting walking in urban areas. In order to cope with this increase in pedestrian flows, European municipal authorities, responsible for road safety, traffic management and mobility, need reliable engineering methods to plan urban road safety and protect vulnerable users. Road safety management systems are usually developed to identify hazardous sites and to find suitable countermeasures. Risk exposure assessment is required to identify sites with high accident potential. This assessment requires the knowledge, on one side, of the known vehicular flows and, on the other, of the pedestrian flows, which are not normally known to road operators. In this paper a methodology to develop and calibrate forecasting model aimed at evaluating pedestrian exposure is presented. The model is based on original approach that integrates the Space Syntax modelling framework with pedestrian mobility aspects and a calibration procedure was proposed that use counts on a limited number of roads. Preliminary results derived from a case study in an urban environment seem promising and confirm the model's good ability to predict pedestrian flows.

The Mean Profile Depth (MPD) is the synthetic index worldwide used to describe the macrotexture of road pavement surfaces. MPD is evaluated from two dimensional profiles captured by macrotexture laser-based devices, by means of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) or ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials International) algorithms. Several macrotexture laser-based measuring devices are present in the world market and, usually each one provides different MPD values also for the same road pavement. Furthermore the Standard Algorithm application produces MPD values affected by a wide variability. For these reasons the comparison of MPD values deriving from different laser-based macrotexture measuring devices is unsatisfying and it can produces deep misunderstanding on road macrotexture characterization. In order to reduce the MPD variability and to improve the MPD values comparison a new algorithm to evaluate a more stable macrotexture synthetic index (Estimated Texture Depth) ETD, has been proposed. It has been developed with more than two hundred profiles belonging to virtual pavements and it has been validated on fifteen real road profiles. The results seems to be promising: the Square Weight Estimated Texture Depth (ETDsw) provides more stable and reliable MPD values and in the same time, it improves the agreement between macrotexture values provided by different laser-based devices.

Pavement skid resistance, affecting wet-road accidents, deteriorates over time because of material properties, laying conditions, weather/seasonal effects and traffic. Skid resistance deterioration models are critical for design, maintenance and rehabilitation purposes, but very few of them explored the influence of traffic in terms of vehicle type and travel mode. This paper shows how it is possible to better model skid resistance deterioration by evaluating cumulated frictional dissipated energy in the tire footprint area. Full-scale accelerated pavement wear tests have been performed and analysed through an energy-based approach. Preliminary results seem promising for redefining the effect of traffic in deterioration models.

Wet skid-resistance is of paramount importance for road safety as it has been recognized to affect wet-road accidents. Recently European Regulations are introducing mandatory classification for tyre friction performance by means of tyre labelling procedure. In this paper an experimental study has been carried out in order to search for a relationship between indexes employed in the tyre and pavement classification. Coupled friction tests have been performed in a controlled manner on five test track with varying texture properties and significant statistical relationship has been derived between Wet Grip Index (WGI), as defined in the European Tyre Labelling Procedure and the International Friction Index (IFI), according to World Road Association (PIARC) friction harmonization experiment. If a temperature correction of skid data is applied a good correlation between WGI and IFI can be obtained. Although the experimental study has to be integrated with a wider measurement campaign, preliminary results seem to indicate that a unified wet tyre-road classification can be pursued allowing a better awareness of the road safety level among road users.

Pavement maintenance is essential to prevent the deterioration of asset value and to satisfy the expectations of all stakeholders (objectives). However, the budgets are often insufficient to keep the road pavement at optimum levels. Therefore, a decision making process ought to be used for prioritizing different maintenance activities in order to achieve pre-defined goals by optimizing the use of the available budget. One of the biggest difficulties in multiobjective optimization method is the large number of the feasible solutions (Pareto optimal set or its approximation), which makes it hard for the Decision Maker to select the best solution. To support interaction with the decision maker for identifying the best combination of maintenance actions, this paper proposes a new methodology named “Interactive Multiobjective Optimization-Dominance Rough Set Approach” (IMO-DRSA), using a decision-rule preference model. The preference information, obtained by the Decision Maker (DM) during the course of the interaction, is processed using the Dominance-based Rough Set Approach in order to achieve a decision model expressed in terms of easily understandable “if ….then …” decision rules. This approach makes possible an interaction between the analyst and the decision maker and helps the decision maker to classify maintenance options and allocate limited funds according to predefined objectives (quantitative or qualitative). An application of the proposed methodology to road pavements of an Italian urban sub-network is presented.

In order to evaluate the real effects and the degradation of the airfield pavement due to airport operations, the knowledge of the aircraft traffic spectrum and its relative loading of the main and secondary landing gears is essential. With the aim to characterize the airplanes load distributions on runway pavements, which generally present more severe damages, different airplane types and landing and take-off operations data on Ciampino Airport, have been collected and analyzed. The longitudinal and transversal statistical distribution of the wheel-path of the aircraft during the landing and take-off operations have been investigated and, according to the aircraft speed, the map of wheel coverage have been derived. Finally, in function of different damage criteria, a software for the evaluation of a coverage contour map of runway pavements has been developed. It can represent an helpful tool for airport authorities to develop more effective planning programs of runways maintenance.

The pavement management can be considered one of the most important element of the Road Asset management for both work volumes and economical investments. In the last years the planning of maintenance interventions represents a challenge to face for private and public road administrators. With the aim to provide a decision support tool, a methodological approach to develop pavement management systems at network level is proposed for small municipalities. According to the principles proposed in recent COST projects, the methodology defines Comfort, Safety, Structural and Environmental Global Indexes, derived from visual inspections and in situ traffic data, that are appropriately weighed in order to model their evolution by means of a statistical regression approach. Finally, basing on different budget scenarios, the degradation of network pavement quality has been predicted with Markov Chain models showing a more rational and efficient planning of pavement management.

Safety aspects, as dry and wet friction and splash and spray phenomena, and environmental aspects, as rolling noise, in-vehicle noise and rolling resistance are highly affected by the pavement surface macrotexture. For these reasons, predicting macrotexture, is a crucial aspect for pavement engineers. In this connection, several statistical empirical models have been proposed in the scientific literature. However, none of them seems to be effective in predicting macrotexture. For these reason, in order to better understand relationship between grading and volumetric properties of bituminous mixes and the corresponding macrotexture level a more theoretical approach has to be pursued. In this paper a preliminary analysis toward the theoretical prediction of road macrotexture is presented. A numerical model by means of a Discrete Element Method (DEM) approach has been developed in order to simulate compaction of a bituminous mix in gyratory compactor. Several DEM simulation speciements have been examined and different simulation strategies have been investigated in order to highlight strengths and weaknesses of each tool. Simulation have been performed on mono-granular mixes and a comparison with experimental specimen prepared in laboratory has been performed. Preliminary results seem rather encouraging showing that this approach may provide useful information for the development of a theoretical prediction model of pavement macrotexture.

The assessment of surface characteristics of runway pavement plays a key role in a modern APMS as it affects, on safety of aircraft operations and user riding comfort. In this paper a more cost-effective approach to develop empirical degradation models which is based on the evaluation of the transversal variability of surface properties of a runway is proposed. The methodology is based on the evaluation transversal distribution of the equivalent coverages derived from the aircraft traffic data. Preliminary results seem to indicate that the approach may represent a viable tool in evaluating the roughness and friction progression

Since 1990 several research projects developing any Pay-Adjustment (PA) procedure for implementing Performance Related Specification (PRS) in Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavement construction have been issued. Previous studies proved that an approach based on life-cycle cost analysis and Monte Carlo simulation was an effective way to develop rational pay-adjustment procedures. However, the PRS systems developed so far had some significant weaknesses in the modelling of the variability of Materials and Construction (M&C) characteristics with corresponding PA. Furthermore they are mainly based on an empirical approach rather than on a mechanistic one. A new approach to model M&C variability in PRS systems, based on beta distribution, is introduced and a new stochastic method for pay-adjustment evaluation is developed. These criteria were embedded in a mechanistic system framework based on life-cycle cost analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. The model has been recently applied to a real case study and results are reported and analysed in this paperwork.
