Energy consumption is associated with economic growth, but it comes with a toll regarding the environment. Renewable energies can be considered substitutes for fossil fuels and may contribute to reducing the environmental degradation that the world is presently facing. With this research, we aimed to offer a broader view of the state-of-the-art in this field, particularly regarding coal and biomass. The main objective is to present a viable and sustainable solution for the coal power plants still in operation, using as a hypothetical example the Pego Power Plant, the last operating coal fueled power plant in Portugal. After the characterization of land use and energy production in Portugal, and more particularly in the Médio Tejo region, where the power plant is located, the availability of biomass was assessed and it was concluded that the volume of biomass needed to keep the Pego power plant working exclusively with biomass is much lower than the yearly growth volume of biomass in the region, which means that this transition would be viable in a sustainable way. This path is aligned with policies to fight climate change, since the use of biomass for energy is characterized by low levels of GHGs emissions when compared to coal. The risk of rural fires would be reduced, and the economic and social impact for this region would be positive.

The objective of the present study is, firstly, to identify the types of transaction costs that can be found for a company from the biomass to energy sector. The chosen company has transaction costs in the context of an in-operation company, i.e., a business already in use. A review of the existing relationship between the company and its local biomass suppliers is also explored, being the key factor to evaluate due to its overall importance, as these suppliers ensure the raw material flow to maintain the operation of the production unit. It was found that it is possible to apply the same analysis and business monitoring methodologies to the biomass-to-energy sector, similar to what is already happening with other sectors of industrial activity. Thus, it was verified after the analysis that it is possible for the company to obtain better productivity yields, especially if the assumptions of the transaction cost theory are optimized. By acknowledging the beneficial effects on the environment by replacing fossil fuels with wood pellets, this study aims, in the context of a pellet producer, to analyze the transaction costs of the entire process of biomass transformation in pellets, from raw materials to processing. This study analyses the value chain of the company by applying transaction cost theory to determine if there is a viable application and to identify which are the transaction costs in the company. The results of this study agree with others carried out under the same theme, thereby supporting the viability of vertical integration and the sustainability of the pellet production industry.

The energy transition alone causes a physical and social transition in places and communities. Although Community Energy (CE) emerged as a grassroots innovation, which is of interest to citizens and policy makers, the benefits, drivers, and barriers need to be extensively studied. In this article we analyse, through a survey, the benefits and drivers that affect the creation and development of the CE. The results lead to two important insights: firstly, environmental benefits outweigh financial ones when creating and developing CE’s. Secondly, it is important to mention the benefits that the CE bring to the regions where they are created. Third, when developing an CE, we must consider must be taken of the impacts it will have on the environment and the community where it will be installed.

On the 27th of February 2015, it was published, in Portugal, the Regulation for Sustainability and Efficient Use of Resources (RESEUR). This is one of the thematic areas created of Portugal 2020, a partnership agreement between Portugal and the European Commission, that regulates the access to European Structural and Investment Funds. RESEUR frames different Investment Priorities (IP) and this research focus on the one that respects energy efficiency, intelligent energy management and the use of renewable energy in local government buildings, street lighting and social housing. We concluded that, despite there were, until now, 87 opportunities for proposal submission, only 46 % of the municipalities have approved projects and no more than 35 % of the budget for this IP is allocated. Until now, € 121 million were approved in this IP, with only 4.2 % meant to interventions in public buildings, although it is the intervention axis with a closer approach to Triple Bottom Line (TBL). Defining a “Decision Triangle” and introducing a political dimension in TBL, we verified that most of the approved projects and the funds allocated refer to social housing and street lighting, i.e. based on the available data there is no demand for TBL balance.

Energy literacy is a useful tool that allows consumers to acquire the knowledge, desire, availability, and obliges to a personal commitment necessary for more efficient energy management. Knowledge about energy, the ability to perform financial calculations, attitude and behavior, all together allows evaluating the different aspects in which it may be necessary to intervene to make people more aware of the need to save energy and more available and receptive to change their energy consumption habits. Using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) we aim to create an energy literacy index, as well as the indices for each of the energy literacy dimensions and to determine which factors influence energy literacy levels. The results obtained allowed us to confirm the influence of gender in energy literacy, verifying that, although women have less knowledge, they demonstrate a more positive attitude and more correct behavior.

The effects of climate change and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions are one of the deep concerns today. The energy generation sector contributes significantly to these emissions, potentiating the climate change and the vulnerability of society and the environment. To attain the Paris Agreement goals, the decarbonization of energy sector at global scale may be a solution, which includes the insertion of more renewable sources in the energy mix. In this sense, the increase on generation by wind energy is a feasible option to achieve these targets. Although the wind energy is considered a “cleaner” source and “free of CO2emissions”, when its entire life cycle is considered, it is possible to verify that certain stages, namely the equipment manufacturing and decommissioning, have different and significant contributions in terms of inputs and energy consumption, but also gases emissions and environmental impacts. Thereby, the aim of this research is to present a systematic literature review of wind farms life cycle assessments, the relevant aspects related to CO2 emissions and resource consumption are highlighted, and improvements in process and advantages of equipment reusing in end of service for diminishing the effects of climate change are discussed.

The energy performance of buildings directive establishes that Member States must introduce minimum energy performance requirements for buildings and building components. Studies must be done based on a cost-optimal level methodology, considering the investment and operational costs to reach nearly Zero Energy Buildings. However, there is a lack of information on the European Union guidelines concerning social and environmental issues. The existent framework requires Member States to make the calculations based on an economic perspective — a macroeconomic level and a financial level. Thus, the three-pillars (social, economic, and environmental) conception of sustainability is not fulfilled in the implementation of the present cost-optimal levels methodology. Neither indoor environmental quality is considered nor the environmental impact of the embodied CO2 in building components. Apart from this, current energy performance certificates are only energy-related. However, they have the potential to track also indoor environmental quality and the global environmental impact of building components. A new approach, both for cost-optimal levels and energy performance certificates, considering indoor environmental quality and the embodied CO2 in building components through a life cycle assessment, could fill the social and the environmental gaps.

Energy literacy is an important tool that empowers consumers, allowing them to make better decisions concerning energy. It involves energy and financial knowledge, citizen's attitudes and intentions, and citizen's habits and behavior related to energy. Thus, the assessment of energy literacy levels gives us a general view of citizen's knowledge, concerns, and habits in the energy context. Many factors may influence these levels, nevertheless, in this paper, we will concentrate our research on age to find some patterns. The influence of age on energy literacy has been studied before, however, the difference found in the factors that influence energy literacy by age group was not studied before, at the top of our knowledge. Our paper aims to fill this gap. We also investigate the relationship between attitude, behavior, and knowledge, within defined age groups. The results show that seniors perform better than the other age groups in energy literacy and all of its dimensions, except on behavior. The results also highlight the importance of financial knowledge and energy awareness to determine energy knowledge and energy literacy, and a strong dual relationship between attitude and behavior.

Educational Escape rooms are games designed for teaching consisting on challenges played in groups where the participants are asked to solve a series of clues and puzzles in a limited amount of time to "escape the room". In recent years Escape rooms have attracted the interest of educators and institutions for their ability to foster the development of valuable skills, considered critical for the job market such as teamwork, leadership, creative thinking, communication and a variety of soft skills necessary for professional success. In teaching, the design of Escape rooms is still in its embryonic stage, but new studies are emerging. As several authors report the learning is absorbed more effectively by students with active participation, practices and discussions on content [21],[4]. These skills are extensively developed in the application of the Escape rooms which are planned and designed specifically for each content, according to the need and learning objectives. The design and development of these Escape rooms is a crucial phase of the process and a challenge for many educators who wish to apply these activities in the classroom. In order to offer a timely contribution to this body of knowledge, this article synthesises the creation and design of Escape rooms in an educational environment, based on existing literature. To this end, the study builds on selected examples of success and some references and tools for creating Escape rooms.

This paper provides new insights on the success of the electricity market integration process so far, by analyzing the existence of co-movements between electricity prices of European electricity markets and thus testing the existence of an effective integration. Contrary to what is usually performed in the literature, our approach makes use of the Continuous Wavelet Transform to analyze data in the time-frequency domain. Results suggest that markets reveal high coherence and, as such, a high degree of integration, mainly due to geographic proximity and current market development. Other European markets are still less integrated showing low co-movement among spot electricity prices. Useful insights are derived from the results as to the current state of electricity markets integration.

This study investigates the effect of eco-innovation actions on firm performance, considering both turnover and employment growth, in European enterprises, focusing on the highly energy consumer sectors and the most polluting ones. The total sample includes 44647 firms from 13 different European Union countries and is based in the most recently released Community Innovation Survey (CIS). Using cross-section econometric techniques, results showed that eco-innovations might affect positively turnover growth, as well as employment growth. Both human capital and the number of adopted eco-innovation strategies influence positively the firm performance. Eco-innovation behavior is also found to be more important than non-eco-innovation in determining firm performance. Moreover, the positive impacts of eco-innovation in firms could be leveraged by the government financial support in these sectors. The conclusions presented showed that eco-innovations are an opportunity for companies cost reduction, opening doors to new growth possibilities.

We analyse community energy in Portugal and Spain. These communities are an alternative route to the dominance of the large energy companies on European market. This analysis is important because the literature emphasizes the weaknesses that the CE have in southern Europe countries comparing to northern Europe ones, as there are no explanations for the delay in development in these countries. Using a survey, we explain the motivations that support the participation of its members in the CE. This paper analyses knowledge of stakeholders and it influence on the participation motives to better understand CE in Spain and Portugal.
