Land cover plays an important role in the climate and biogeochemistry of the Earth system. It is of great significance to produce and evaluate the global land cover (GLC) data when applying the data to the practice at a specific spatial scale. The objective of this study is to evaluate and validate the consistency of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land cover product (MCD12Q1) at a provincial scale (Anhui Province, China) based on the Chinese 30 m GLC product (GlobeLand30). A harmonization method is firstly used to reclassify the land cover types between five classification schemes (International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP) global vegetation classification, University of Maryland (UMD), MODIS-derived Leaf Area Index and Fractional Photosynthetically Active Radiation (LAI/FPAR), MODIS-derived Net Primary Production (NPP), and Plant Functional Type (PFT)) of MCD12Q1 and ten classes of GlobeLand30, based on the knowledge rule (KR) and C4.5 decision tree (DT) classification algorithm. A total of five harmonized land cover types are derived including woodland, grassland, cropland, wetland and artificial surfaces, and four evaluation indicators are selected including the area consistency, spatial consistency, classification accuracy and landscape diversity in the three sub-regions of Wanbei, Wanzhong and Wannan. The results indicate that the consistency of IGBP is the best among the five schemes of MCD12Q1 according to the correlation coefficient (R). The “woodland” LAI/FPAR is the worst, with a spatial similarity (O) of 58.17% due to the misclassification between “woodland” and “others”. The consistency of NPP is the worst among the five schemes as the agreement varied from 1.61% to 56.23% in the three sub-regions. Furthermore, with the biggest difference of diversity indices between LAI/FPAR and GlobeLand30, the consistency of LAI/FPAR is the weakest. This study provides a methodological reference for evaluating the consistency of different GLC products derived from multi-source and multi-resolution remote sensing datasets on various spatial scales.

Accurate and dynamic monitoring of crop nitrogen status is the basis of scientific decisions regarding fertilization. In this study, we compared and analyzed three types of spectral variables: Sensitive spectral bands, the position of spectral features, and typical hyperspectral vegetation indices. First, the Savitzky-Golay technique was used to smooth the original spectrum, following which three types of spectral parameters describing crop spectral characteristics were extracted. Next, the successive projections algorithm (SPA) was adopted to screen out the sensitive variable set from each type of parameters. Finally, partial least squares (PLS) regression and random forest (RF) algorithms were used to comprehensively compare and analyze the performance of different types of spectral variables for estimating corn leaf nitrogen content (LNC). The results show that the integrated variable set composed of the optimal ones screened by SPA from three types of variables had the best performance for LNC estimation by the validation data set, with the values of R2, root means square error (RMSE), and normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) of 0.77, 0.31, and 17.1%, and 0.55, 0.43, and 23.9% from PLS and RF, respectively. It indicates that the PLS model with optimally multitype spectral variables can provide better fits and be a more effective tool for evaluating corn LNC.

Powdery mildew (PM, Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici) is a devastating disease for wheat growth and production. It is highly meaningful that the disease severities can be objectively and accurately identified by image visualization technology. In this study, an integral method was proposed based on a hyperspectral imaging dataset and machine learning algorithms. The disease severities of wheat leaves infected with PM were quantitatively identified based on hyperspectral images and image segmentation techniques. A technical procedure was proposed to perform the identification and evaluation of leaf-scale wheat PM, specifically including three primary steps of the acquisition and preprocessing of hyperspectral images, the selection of characteristic bands, and model construction. Firstly, three-dimensional reduction algorithms, namely principal component analysis (PCA), random forest (RF), and the successive projections algorithm (SPA), were comparatively used to select the bands that were most sensitive to PM. Then, three diagnosis models were constructed by a support vector machine (SVM), RF, and a probabilistic neural network (PNN). Finally, the best model was selected by comparing the overall accuracies. The results show that the SVM model constructed by PCA dimensionality reduction had the best result, and the classification accuracy reached 93.33% by a cross-validation method. There was an obvious improvement of the identification accuracy with the model, which achieved an 88.00% accuracy derived from the original hyperspectral images. This study can provide a reference for accurately estimating the disease severity of leaf-scale wheat PM and other plant diseases by non-contact measurement technology.

To improve the accuracy of remote-sensing image semantic segmentation in complex scenario, an improved DeepLabv3+ lightweight neural network is proposed. Specifically, the lightweight network MobileNetv2 is used as the backbone network. In atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP), to alleviate the gridding effect, the Dilated Convolution in original DeepLabv3+ network is replaced with the Hybrid Dilated Convolution (HDC) module. In addition, the traditional spatial mean pooling is replaced by the strip pooling module (SPN) to improve the local segmentation effect. In the decoder, to obtain the rich low-level target edge information, the ResNet50 residual network is added after the low-level feature fusion. To enhance the shallow semantic information, the efficient and lightweight Normalization-based Attention Module (NAM) is added to capture the feature information of small target objects. The results show that, under the INRIA Aerial Image Dataset and same parameter setting, the Mean Pixel Accuracy (MPA) and Mean Intersection over Union (MIoU) are generally best than DeepLabv3+ , U-Net, and PSP-Net, which are respectively improved by 1.22%, − 0.22%, and 2.22% and 2.17%, 1.35%, and 3.42%. Our proposed method has also a good performance on the small object segmentation and multi-object segmentation. What’s more, it significantly converges faster with fewer model parameters and stronger computing power while ensuring the segmentation effect. It is proved to be robust and can provide a methodological reference for high-precision remote-sensing image semantic segmentation.

Fusarium head blight (FHB), one of the most prevalent and damaging infection diseases of wheat, affects quality and safety of associated food. In this study, to realize the early accurate monitoring of FHB, a diagnostic model of disease severity was proposed based on the fusion features of image and spectral features. First, the hyperspectral image of FHB infected in the range of the 400–1000 nm spectrum was collected, and the color parameters of wheat ear and spot region were segmented based on image features. Twelve sensitive bands were extracted using the successive projection algorithm, gray-scale co-occurrence matrix, and RGB color model. Four texture features were extracted from each feature band image as texture variables, and nine color feature variables were extracted from R, G, and B component images. Texture features with high correlation and color features were selected to participate in the final model building parameters via correlation analysis. Finally, the particle swarm optimization support vector machine (PSO-SVM) algorithm was used to build the model based on the diagnosis model of disease severity of FHB with different combinations of characteristic variables. The experimental results showed that the PSO-SVM model based on spectral and color feature fusion was optimal. Moreover, the accuracy of the training and prediction set was 95% and 92%, respectively. The method based on fusion features of image and spectral features can accurately and effectively diagnose the severity of FHB, thereby providing a technical basis for the timely and effective control of FHB and precise application of a pesticide.

To accurately extract cultivated land boundaries based on high-resolution remote sensing imagery, an improved watershed segmentation algorithm was proposed herein based on a combination of pre- and post-improvement procedures. Image contrast enhancement was used as the pre-improvement, while the color distance of the Commission Internationale de l´Eclairage (CIE) color space, including the Lab and Luv, was used as the regional similarity measure for region merging as the post-improvement. Furthermore, the area relative error criterion (δA), the pixel quantity error criterion (δP), and the consistency criterion (Khat) were used for evaluating the image segmentation accuracy. The region merging in Red–Green–Blue (RGB) color space was selected to compare the proposed algorithm by extracting cultivated land boundaries. The validation experiments were performed using a subset of Chinese Gaofen-2 (GF-2) remote sensing image with a coverage area of 0.12 km2. The results showed the following: (1) The contrast-enhanced image exhibited an obvious gain in terms of improving the image segmentation effect and time efficiency using the improved algorithm. The time efficiency increased by 10.31%, 60.00%, and 40.28%, respectively, in the RGB, Lab, and Luv color spaces. (2) The optimal segmentation and merging scale parameters in the RGB, Lab, and Luv color spaces were C for minimum areas of 2000, 1900, and 2000, and D for a color difference of 1000, 40, and 40. (3) The algorithm improved the time efficiency of cultivated land boundary extraction in the Lab and Luv color spaces by 35.16% and 29.58%, respectively, compared to the RGB color space. The extraction accuracy was compared to the RGB color space using the δA, δP, and Khat, that were improved by 76.92%, 62.01%, and 16.83%, respectively, in the Lab color space, while they were 55.79%, 49.67%, and 13.42% in the Luv color space. (4) Through the visual comparison, time efficiency, and segmentation accuracy, the comprehensive extraction effect using the proposed algorithm was obviously better than that of RGB color-based space algorithm. The established accuracy evaluation indicators were also proven to be consistent with the visual evaluation. (5) The proposed method has a satisfying transferability by a wider test area with a coverage area of 1 km2. In addition, the proposed method, based on the image contrast enhancement, was to perform the region merging in the CIE color space according to the simulated immersion watershed segmentation results. It is a useful attempt for the watershed segmentation algorithm to extract cultivated land boundaries, which provides a reference for enhancing the watershed algorithm.
