Recently, single-person households have increased in Korea and this trend may have potential public health implications and affect various health behaviors. This study investigated the associations between living alone and health behaviors such as smoking and alcohol consumption among Korean adults. We used data from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2013 and 2015 and a total of 17,088 adults were included. We performed a multivariable logistic regression analysis and calculated odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Single-person households accounted for about 10% of the total participants. The proportions of currently smoking and heavy alcohol consumption were higher among individuals living alone than those living together among younger women and middle-aged and elderly men and women. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, living alone was associated with increased odds of currently smoking compared to living together among middle-aged men and women (OR, 7.37; 95% CI, 2.33-23.32 in men and OR, 2.36; 95% CI, 1.04-5.36 in women) after adjusting for confounding variables. From this nationwide, population-based study, we found that living alone is associated with increased odds of currently smoking, especially in middle-aged people. Public health concerns may be warranted for middle-aged single-person households to reduce health risks related to smoking.

Background: To evaluate the association of dental diseases and oral hygiene care with incidence of heart failure (HF) among patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods and Results: This study included 173 927 patients with type 2 diabetes aged ≥40 years, who underwent Korean National Health Insurance Service health examinations in 2008 and were followed up until the end of 2017. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for HF were estimated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. During a median follow‐up of 9.3 years, 1.94% of participants developed HF. An increased number of missing teeth was associated with a higher risk of HF ( P <0.001). HRs of HF increased among individuals with ≥15 missing teeth (HR, 1.37 [95% CI, 1.14–1.64]) compared with those without missing teeth. Decreased risk of HF was observed in individuals with ≥1 time/year of professional dental cleaning (HR, 0.93 [95% CI, 0.87–0.99]) and in those with ≥2 times/d of toothbrushing (HR, 0.90 [95% CI, 0.82–0.98]) compared with those without these practices. While combined presence of missing teeth and periodontal disease ( P =0.004) or dental caries ( P =0.007) increased HF risk, combined oral hygiene care was associated with further HF risk reduction ( P =0.024). Better oral hygiene care was associated with decreased HF risk, even as the number of missing teeth increased ( P <0.001). Conclusions: Among patients with type 2 diabetes, dental diseases and oral hygiene care are important determinants of HF development. Dental disease management and good oral care may prevent HF in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Introduction: The relationship between nicotine dependence and the use of multiple tobacco products, such as heated tobacco products (HTPs), electronic cigarettes (ECs), and combustible cigarettes (CCs), is not well investigated. We evaluated nicotine dependence symptoms among South Korean...
The aim of this study was to investigate the prescribing cascade phenomenon of dopaminergic drugs such as levodopa in the management of gastroprokinetic drugs induced parkinsonism. Based on the Korea National Health Insurance Service (NHIS)-Senior Cohort Database, we analyzed patients aged ≥65 years, between 2009 and 2013, who obtained new prescriptions for levodopa through the NHIS during this period. Those who were prescribed levodopa from 2002 to 2008 were excluded, only patients who were prescribed metoclopramide and levosulpiride within 90 days of receiving the levodopa prescription were included. Those who did not receive levodopa were used as a control group for 1:3 age and sex matching. We assessed 1824 and 1197 levodopa cases for metoclopramide and levosulpiride use, respectively. The matched controls for each levodopa case were 5472 and 3591, respectively. We used conditional logistic regression to determine the odds ratio (OR) for initiation of levodopa therapy in patients using metoclopramide and levosulpiride, relative to nonusers, after adjusting for age, sex, and exposure to antipsychotic medication. Both metoclopramide (OR = 3.04; 95% confidence interval, CI, 2.46–3.77) and levosulpiride (OR = 3.32; 95% CI, 2.56–4.3) users were three times more likely to begin using medication containing levodopa, compared to nonusers. Metoclopramide and levosulpiride were frequently prescribed within 90 days of receiving a prescription for levodopa. Before prescribing levodopa, it should be considered whether the adverse event is actually a side effect caused by metoclopramide and levosulpiride.
Many efforts have been launched to promote breastfeeding in Korea. However, breastfeeding trends and associated factors with breastfeeding in Korea remain unknown. This study aimed to examine trends and determinants in breastfeeding using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) (2010–2018). We analyzed data from the KNHANES V (2010–2012), VI (2013–2015), and VII (2016–2018). A total of 9232 women aged 19–49 years were included in this study. We performed multivariable logistic regression analyses to investigate breastfeeding prevalence trends and associated factors with breastfeeding. Compared to 2010–2012, the odds ratio associated with breastfeeding during 2013–2015 and 2016–2018 increased to 1.30 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.11–1.51) and 1.40 (95% CI: 1.21–1.63), respectively. The breastfeeding rate was associated with 40–49 years (OR, 95% CI: 0.47, 0.34–0.64 compared to 19–29 years), richer and poorer income (1.20, 1.03–1.39 in richer group and 1.24, 1.05–1.46 in poorer group compared to richest group), education level (0.74, 0.65–0.86 in ≤12 years of education compared to ≥13 years of education), smoking status (1.77, 1.38–2.28 in non-smoking compared to smoking), and self-rated health (1.40, 1.14–1.70 in good and 1.20, 1.00–1.44 in average compared to bad). Education programs and policies such as the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) and mother-friendly workplaces are necessary to increase the rates of breastfeeding in these groups.
