Forest aboveground biomass (AGB) was mapped throughout China using large footprint LiDAR waveform data from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) onboard NASA’s Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) imagery and forest inventory data. The entire land of China was divided into seven zones according to the geographic characteristics of the forests. The forest AGB prediction models were separately developed for different forest types in each of the seven forest zones at GLAS footprint level from GLAS waveform parameters and biomass derived from height and diameter at breast height (DBH) field observation. Some waveform parameters used in the prediction models were able to reduce the effects of slope on biomass estimation. The models of GLAS-based biomass estimates were developed by using GLAS footprints with slopes less than 20° and slopes ≥ 20°, respectively. Then, all GLAS footprint biomass and MODIS data were used to establish Random Forest regression models for extrapolating footprint AGB to a nationwide scale. The total amount of estimated AGB in Chinese forests around 2006 was about 12,622 Mt vs. 12,617 Mt derived from the seventh national forest resource inventory data. Nearly half of all provinces showed a relative error (%) of less than 20%, and 80% of total provinces had relative errors less than 50%.

Mapping the magnitude and spatial distribution of forest aboveground biomass (AGB, in Mg·ha−1) is crucial to improve our understanding of the terrestrial carbon cycle. Landsat/TM (Thematic Mapper) and ICESat/GLAS (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite, Geoscience Laser Altimeter System) data were integrated to estimate the AGB in the Changbai Mountain area. Firstly, four forest types were delineated according to TM data classification. Secondly, different models for prediction of the AGB at the GLAS footprint level were developed from GLAS waveform metrics and the AGB was derived from field observations using multiple stepwise regression. Lastly, GLAS-derived AGB, in combination with vegetation indices, leaf area index (LAI), canopy closure, and digital elevation model (DEM), were used to drive a data fusion model based on the random forest approach for extrapolating the GLAS footprint AGB to a continuous AGB map. The classification result showed that the Changbai Mountain region was characterized as forest-rich in altitudinal vegetation zones. The contribution of remote sensing variables in modeling the AGB was evaluated. Vegetation index metrics account for large amount of contribution in AGB ranges <150 Mg·ha−1, while canopy closure has the largest contribution in AGB ranges ≥150 Mg·ha−1. Our study revealed that spatial information from two sensors and DEM could be combined to estimate the AGB with an R2 of 0.72 and an RMSE of 25.24 Mg·ha−1 in validation at stand level (size varied from ~0.3 ha to ~3 ha).

In this paper, we use the small baseline set technology and the early geological hazard identification method based on the selection of Permanent Scatter (PS) and Distributed Scatter (DS) points to carry out the research on surface deformation monitoring caused by underground activities in mining cluster areas. We adopted the Small Baseline Subset InSAR (SBAS-InSAR) technique to process Sentinel-1A SAR images over the research area from March 2017 to May 2021. The deformation estimation technology based on the robustness of PS points and DS points can be used for early identification of high-density surface subsidence in a large area of mines. The surface subsidence information can be obtained quickly and accurately, and the advantages of using InSAR technology to monitor long-time surface subsidence in complex mining cluster areas was explored in this study. By comparing the monitoring data of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) ground monitoring equipment, the accuracy error of large-scale surface settlement information is controlled within 8 mm, which has high accuracy. Meanwhile, according to the spatial characteristics of cluster mining areas, it is analyzed that the relationship between adjacent mining areas through groundwater easily leads to regional associated large-area settlement changes. Compared with the D-InSAR (Differential InSAR) technology applied in mine monitoring at the early stage, this proposed method can monitor a large range of long time series and optimize the problem of decoherence to some extent in mining cluster areas. It has important reference significance for early monitoring and early warning of subsidence disaster evolution in mining intensive areas.

Southern China, one of the traditional rice production bases, has experienced significant declines in the area of rice paddy since the beginning of this century. Monitoring the rice cropping area is becoming an urgent need for food security policy decisions. One of the main challenges for mapping rice in this area is the quantity of cloud-free observations that are vulnerable to frequent cloud cover. Another relevant issue that needs to be addressed is determining how to select the appropriate classifier for mapping paddy rice based on the cloud-masked observations. Therefore, this study was organized to quickly find a strategy for rice mapping by evaluating cloud-mask algorithms and machine-learning methods for Sentinel-2 imagery. Specifically, we compared four GEE-embedded cloud-mask algorithms (QA60, S2cloudless, CloudScore, and CDI (Cloud Displacement Index)) and analyzed the appropriateness of widely accepted machine-learning classifiers (random forest, support vector machine, classification and regression tree, gradient tree boost) for cloud-masked imagery. The S2cloudless algorithm had a clear edge over the other three algorithms based on its overall accuracy in evaluation and visual inspection. The findings showed that the algorithm with a combination of S2cloudless and random forest showed the best performance when comparing mapping results with field survey data, referenced rice maps, and statistical yearbooks. In general, the research highlighted the potential of using Sentinel-2 imagery to map paddy rice with multiple combinations of cloud-mask algorithms and machine-learning methods in a cloud-prone area, which has the potential to broaden our rice mapping strategies.

The optimum temperature ( ) in the current Carnegie–Ames–Stanford Approach (CASA) model was defined as the mean temperature of the month when normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) reaches its maximum. However, it requires improvements from a comprehensive perspective due to that the stability of the maximum NDVI acquisition is subjected to a variety of factors. The article proposed an improved CASA model by redefining the optimum temperature based on phenology ( ) to model the net primary production (NPP) of forest in Shennongjia, central China, and analysed the relationship between annual mean NPP and topography. Logistic function was used to model the phenological phases of forest and was redefined as the mean temperature during the period of maturity stability. The improved was lower than the for five forest types. Specifically, the average of evergreen broadleaf forest, deciduous broadleaf forest, evergreen needleleaf forest, deciduous needleleaf forest, and mixed forest were 22.72°C, 23.31°C, 24.05°C, 23.41°C, and 23.18°C, respectively, whereas the corresponding average were 24.42°C, 24.90°C, 24.54°C, 24.57°C, and 24.43°C, respectively. The NPP observations transformed from field measured biomass were used to evaluate the accuracy of NPP estimated from the -based CASA model and the -based CASA model. The result indicated that the accuracy of the -based CASA model was higher than that of the -based CASA model, with the coefficients of determination of 0.837 (root mean square error (RMSE) = 75 g C m–2 year–1) and 0.632 (RMSE = 122 g C m–2 year–1), respectively. The total NPP of forest in Shennongjia modelled by the -based CASA model and the -based CASA model were 1.40 and 1.35 Tg C year–1, respectively. The relationship between the annual mean NPP and altitude showed a quadratic polynomial function at the altitude from 500 to 3000 m, while the relationship between the annual mean NPP and aspect showed a sine function when aspect in the range of 4.5–360.0°. The results demonstrate that the improvement of CASA model ( -based CASA model) is of great significance in phenology and plays as a promising alternative method to model NPP for forest.

Freshwater aquaculture in Jianghan Plain plays a key role in the whole industry of China. It was expanding rapidly to meet the fast-growing demand of consumption in these decades. The spatial distribution change of aquaculture in Jianghan Plain has attracted many researchers in recent years and it is worth further investigating. However, the accuracy and the quality of inland aquaculture classification and mapping still have space to be improved. Our study attempts to use Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data to classify aquaculture areas, non-aquaculture water, and non-water areas. We applied image segmentation and pixel-based feature computation to obtain candidate datasets. Recursive feature elimination (RFE) was used to find the optimal datasets which were then imported into a modified UNet for classification. This workflow was then applied to the annual datasets for better observation of the spatial change of aquaculture areas. In total 12 indices and features were found most influential and preserved after RFE. The overall classification accuracy reached 96.83%, while the precision and recall of aquaculture areas reached 84.47% and 90.48%, respectively. The combination of object-based and pixel-based image analysis showed its advantage in inland aquaculture classification compared to other studies. Integrated rice–crawfish farming was found a key factor motivating the rapid development of aquaculture. Policies about the fishing ban and ecosystem restoration were also found deeply affecting the spatial change of aquaculture in Jianghan Plain.
