Many swarm optimization algorithms have been introduced since the early 60’s, Evolutionary Programming to the most recent, Grey Wolf Optimization. All of these algorithms have demonstrated their potential to solve many optimization problems. This paper provides an in-depth survey of well-known optimization algorithms. Selected algorithms are briefly explained and compared with each other comprehensively through experiments conducted using thirty well-known benchmark functions. Their advantages and disadvantages are also discussed. A number of statistical tests are then carried out to determine the significant performances. The results indicate the overall advantage of Differential Evolution (DE) and is closely followed by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), compared with other considered approaches.

Facial expression recognition (FER) is the task of determining a person’s current emotion. It plays an important role in healthcare, marketing, and counselling. With the advancement in deep learning algorithms like Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), the system’s accuracy is improving. A hybrid CNN and k-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) model can improve FER’s accuracy. This paper presents a hybrid CNN-KNN model for FER on the Raspberry Pi 4, where we use CNN for feature extraction. Subsequently, the KNN performs expression recognition. We use the transfer learning technique to build our system with an EfficientNet-Lite model. The hybrid model we propose replaces the Softmax layer in the EfficientNet with the KNN. We train our model using the FER-2013 dataset and compare its performance with different architectures trained on the same dataset. We perform optimization on the Fully Connected layer, loss function, loss optimizer, optimizer learning rate, class weights, and KNN distance function with the k-value. Despite running on the Raspberry Pi hardware with very limited processing power, low memory capacity, and small storage capacity, our proposed model achieves a similar accuracy of 75.26% (with a slight improvement of 0.06%) to the state-of-the-art’s Ensemble of 8 CNN model.

Alongside the development of high-speed rail, rail flaw detection is of great importance to ensure railway safety, especially for improving the speed and load of the train. Several conventional inspection methods such as visual, acoustic, and electromagnetic inspection have been introduced in the past. However, these methods have several challenges in terms of detection speed and accuracy. Combined inspection methods have emerged as a promising approach to overcome these limitations. Nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques in conjunction with artificial intelligence approaches have tremendous potential and viability because it is highly possible to improve the detection accuracy which has been proven in various conventional nondestructive testing techniques. With the development of information technology, communication technology, and sensor technology, rail health monitoring systems have been evolving, and have become equally significant and challenging because they can achieve real-time detection and give a risk warning forecast. This paper provides an in-depth review of traditional nondestructive techniques for rail inspection as well as the development of using machine learning approaches, combined nondestructive techniques, and rail health monitoring systems.

Over the past few years, mobile robots are widely used in various industries because they can navigate in dynamic environments and carry out everyday tasks efficiently. Path planning undoubtedly plays an important role in mobile robot navigation, thus becoming one of the most researched topics in the field of robotics. The metaheuristic algorithms have been extensively studied in recent years to solve the path planning problems the same way as the optimization problems were solved, or in other words, plan the optimum path for the robot to navigate from the starting point to the destination. In this research, a mobile robot is launched to find its path from the starting point to the destination in three different simulated environments using a proposed hybrid metaheuristic algorithm between Particle Swarm Optimization and Fringe Search Algorithm, named PSOFS, and its simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) capability. During runtime, the path is optimized by considering the path length. The performance of PSOFS for local path planning is compared against two existing algorithms by evaluating the path smoothness as well as robot safety. The results showed that PSOFS has successfully generated shorter, smoother, and safer paths than the algorithms for mobile robot navigation in unknown indoor environments.
