We examined the relationship between satellite measurements of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and several meteorological drought indices, including the multi-time-scale standard precipitation index (SPI) and the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI), to evaluate the potential of using SIF to monitor and assess drought. We found significant positive relationships between SIF and drought indices during the growing season (from June to September). SIF was found to be more sensitive to short-term SPIs (one or two months) and less sensitive to long-term SPI (three months) than were the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) or the normalized difference water index (NDWI). Significant correlations were found between SIF and PDSI during the growing season for the Great Plains. We found good consistency between SIF and flux-estimated gross primary production (GPP) for the years studied, and synchronous declines of SIF and GPP in an extreme drought year (2012). We used SIF to monitor and assess the drought that occurred in the Great Plains during the summer of 2012, and found that although a meteorological drought was experienced throughout the Great Plains from June to September, the western area experienced more agricultural drought than the eastern area. Meanwhile, SIF declined more significantly than NDVI during the peak growing season. Yet for senescence, during which time the reduction of NDVI still went on, the reduction of SIF was eased. Our work provides an alternative to traditional reflectance-based vegetation or drought indices for monitoring and assessing agricultural drought.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) has been increasingly applied to crop growth monitoring due to their advantages, such as their rapid and repetitive capture ability, high resolution, and low cost. LAI is an important parameter for evaluating crop canopy structure and growth without damage. Accurate monitoring of cotton LAI has guiding significance for nutritional diagnosis and the accurate fertilization of cotton. This study aimed to obtain hyperspectral images of the cotton canopy using a UAV carrying a hyperspectral sensor and to extract effective information to achieve cotton LAI monitoring. In this study, cotton field experiments with different nitrogen application levels and canopy spectral images of cotton at different growth stages were obtained using a UAV carrying hyperspectral sensors. Hyperspectral reflectance can directly reflect the characteristics of vegetation, and vegetation indices (VIs) can quantitatively describe the growth status of plants through the difference between vegetation in different band ranges and soil backgrounds. In this study, canopy spectral reflectance was extracted in order to reduce noise interference, separate overlapping samples, and highlight spectral features to perform spectral transformation; characteristic band screening was carried out; and VIs were constructed using a correlation coefficient matrix. Combined with canopy spectral reflectance and VIs, multiple stepwise regression (MSR) and extreme learning machine (ELM) were used to construct an LAI monitoring model of cotton during the whole growth period. The results show that, after spectral noise reduction, the bands screened by the successive projections algorithm (SPA) are too concentrated, while the sensitive bands screened by the shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA) are evenly distributed. Secondly, the calculation of VIs after spectral noise reduction can improve the correlation between vegetation indices and LAI. The DVI (540,525) correlation was the largest after standard normal variable transformation (SNV) pretreatment, with a correlation coefficient of −0.7591. Thirdly, cotton LAI monitoring can be realized only based on spectral reflectance or VIs, and the ELM model constructed by calculating vegetation indices after SNV transformation had the best effect, with verification set R2 = 0.7408, RMSE = 1.5231, and rRMSE = 24.33%, Lastly, the ELM model based on SNV-SFLA-SNV-VIs had the best performance, with validation set R2 = 0.9066, RMSE = 0.9590, and rRMSE = 15.72%. The study results show that the UAV equipped with a hyperspectral sensor has broad prospects in the detection of crop growth index, and it can provide a theoretical basis for precise cotton field management and variable fertilization.

Around the world, the increasing drought, which is exacerbated by climate change, has significant impacts on vegetation carbon assimilation. Identifying how short-term climate anomalies influence vegetation productivity in a timely and accurate manner at the satellite scale is crucial to monitoring drought. Satellite solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has recently been reported as a direct proxy of actual vegetation photosynthesis and has more advantages than traditional vegetation indices (e.g., the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI and the Enhanced Vegetation Index, EVI) in monitoring vegetation vitality. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of SIF in interpreting drought effects on vegetation productivity in Victoria, Australia, where heat stress and drought are often reported. Drought-induced variations in SIF and absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) estimations based on NDVI and EVI were investigated and validated against results indicated by gross primary production (GPP). We first compared drought responses of GPP and vegetation proxies (SIF and APAR) during the 2009 drought event, considering potential biome-dependency. Results showed that SIF exhibited more consistent declines with GPP losses induced by drought than did APAR estimations during the 2009 drought period in space and time, where APAR had obvious lagged responses compared with SIF, especially in evergreen broadleaf forest land. We then estimated the sensitivities of the aforementioned variables to meteorology anomalies using the ARx model, where memory effects were considered, and compared the correlations of GPP anomaly with the anomalies of vegetation proxies during a relatively long period (2007–2013). Compared with APAR, GPP and SIF are more sensitive to temperature anomalies for the general Victoria region. For crop land, GPP and vegetation proxies showed similar sensitivities to temperature and water availability. For evergreen broadleaf forest land, SIF anomaly was explained better by meteorology anomalies than APAR anomalies. GPP anomaly showed a stronger linear relationship with SIF anomaly than with APAR anomalies, especially for evergreen broadleaf forest land. We showed that SIF might be a promising tool for effectively evaluating short-term drought impacts on vegetation productivity, especially in drought-vulnerable areas, such as Victoria.

Landsat 8, the most recently launched satellite of the series, promises to maintain the continuity of Landsat 7. However, in addition to subtle differences in sensor characteristics and vegetation index (VI) generation algorithms, VIs respond differently to the seasonality of the various types of vegetation cover. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effects of these variations on VIs between Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+). Ground spectral data for vegetation were used to simulate the Landsat at-senor broadband reflectance, with consideration of sensor band-pass differences. Three band-geometric VIs (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI)) and two band-transformation VIs (Vegetation Index based on the Universal Pattern Decomposition method (VIUPD), Tasseled Cap Transformation Greenness (TCG)) were tested to evaluate the performance of various VI generation algorithms in relation to multi-sensor continuity. Six vegetation types were included to evaluate the continuity in different vegetation types. Four pairs of data during four seasons were selected to evaluate continuity with respect to seasonal variation. The simulated data showed that OLI largely inherits the band-pass characteristics of ETM+. Overall, the continuity of band-transformation derived VIs was higher than band-geometry derived VIs. VI continuity was higher in the three forest types and the shrubs in the relatively rapid growth periods of summer and autumn, but lower for the other two non-forest types (grassland and crops) during the same periods.

Cotton maps (10 m) of Xinjiang (XJ_COTTON10), which is the largest cotton production region of China, were produced from 2018 to 2021 through supervised classification. A two-step mapping strategy, i.e., cropland mapping followed by cotton extraction, was employed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of cotton mapping for a large region of about 1.66 million km2with high heterogeneity. Additionally, the time-series satellite data related to spectral, textural, structural, and phenological features were combined and used in a supervised random forest classifier. The cotton/non-cotton classification model achieved overall accuracies of about 95% and 90% on the test samples of the same and adjacent years, respectively. The proposed two-step cotton mapping strategy proved promising and effective in producing multi-year and consistent cotton maps. XJ_COTTON10 agreed well with the statistical areas of cotton at the county level (R2 = 0.84–0.94). This is the first cotton mapping for the entire Xinjiang at 10-meter resolution, which can provide a basis for high-precision cotton monitoring and policymaking in China.

Remote sensing of high-latitude forests phenology is essential for understanding the global carbon cycle and the response of vegetation to climate change. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) has long been used to study boreal evergreen needleleaf forests (ENF) and deciduous broadleaf forests. However, the NDVI-based growing season is generally reported to be longer than that based on gross primary production (GPP), which can be attributed to the difference between greenness and photosynthesis. Instead of introducing environmental factors such as land surface or air temperature like previous studies, this study attempts to make VI-based phenology more consistent with photosynthesis dynamics through applying a light use efficiency model. NDVI (MOD13C2) was used as a proxy for both fractional of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) and light use efficiency at seasonal time scale. Results show that VI-based phenology is improved towards tracking seasonal GPP changes more precisely after applying the light use efficiency model compared to raw NDVI or APAR, especially over ENF.
