Polyimide has excellent electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties and is widely used as a dielectric material in electrical equipment and electronic devices. However, the influencing mechanism of sample thickness on electrical breakdown of polyimide has not been very clear until now. The direct current (DC) electrical breakdown properties of polyimide as a function of thickness were investigated by experiments and simulations of space charge modulated electrical breakdown (SCEB) model and charge transport and molecular displacement modulated (CTMD) model. The experimental results show that the electrical breakdown field decreases with an increase in the sample thickness in the form of an inverse power function, and the inverse power index is 0.324. Trap properties and carrier mobility were also measured for the simulations. Both the simulation results obtained by the SCEB model and the CTMD model have the inverse power forms of breakdown field as a function of thickness with the power indexes of 0.030 and 0.339. The outputs of the CTMD model were closer to the experiments. This indicates that the displacement of a molecular chain with occupied deep traps enlarging the free volume might be a main factor causing the DC electrical breakdown field of polyimide varying with sample thickness.

Dielectric energy storage capacitors have advantages such as ultra-high power density, extremely fast charge and discharge speed, long service lifespan and are significant for pulsed power system, smart power grid, and power electronics. Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most widely used dielectric materials for dielectric energy storage capacitors. It is of interest to investigate how to improve its electrical breakdown strength by nanodoping and the influencing mechanism of nanodoping on the electrical breakdown properties of polymer nanocomposites. PP/Al2O3 nanocomposite dielectric materials with various weight fraction of nanoparticles are fabricated by melt-blending and hot-pressing methods. Thermally stimulated current, surface potential decay, and dc electrical breakdown experiments show that deep trap properties and associated molecular chain motion are changed by incorporating nanofillers into polymer matrix, resulting in the variations in conductivity and dc electrical breakdown field of nanocomposite dielectrics. Then, a charge transport and molecular displacement modulated electrical breakdown model is utilized to simulate the dc electrical breakdown behavior. It is found that isolated interfacial regions formed in nanocomposite dielectrics at relatively low loadings reduce the effective carrier mobility and strengthen the interaction between molecular chains, hindering the transport of charges and the displacement of molecular chains with occupied deep traps. Accordingly, the electrical breakdown strength is enhanced at relatively low loadings. Interfacial regions may overlap in nanocomposite dielectrics at relatively high loadings so that the effective carrier mobility decreases and the interaction between molecular chains may be weakened. Consequently, the molecular motion is accelerated by electric force, leading to the decrease in electrical breakdown strength. The experiments and simulations reveals that the influence of nanodoping on dc electrical breakdown properties may origin from the changes in the charge transport and molecular displacement characteristics caused by interfacial regions in nanocomposite dielectrics.

Charge trapping and de-trapping properties can affect space charge accumulation and electric field distortion behavior in polymers. Dielectric materials may contain different types of traps with different energy distributions, and it is of interest to investigate the charge trapping/de-trapping dynamic processes in dielectric materials containing multiple discrete trap centers. In the present work, we analyze the charge trapping/de-trapping dynamics in materials with two discrete traps in two cases where charges are injected continuously or only for a very short period. The time dependent trapped charge densities are obtained by the integration of parts in the case of continuous charge injection. In the case of instantaneous charge injection, we simplify the charge trapping/de-trapping equations and obtain the analytical solutions of trapped charge densities, quasi-free charge density, and effective carrier mobility. The analytical solutions are in good agreement with the numerical results. Then, the space charge dynamics in dielectric materials with two discrete trapping centers are studied by the bipolar charge transport (BCT) model, consisting of charge injection, charge migration, charge trapping, de-trapping, and recombination processes. The BCT outputs show the time evolution of spatial distributions of space charge densities. Moreover, we also achieve the charge densities at the same position in the sample as a function of time by the BCT model. It is found that the DC poling duration can affect the energy distribution of accumulated space charges. In addition, it is found that the coupling dynamic processes will establish a dynamic equilibrium rather than a thermodynamic equilibrium in the dielectric materials.

The development of direct current high-voltage power cables requires insulating materials having excellent electrically insulation properties. Experiments show that appropriate nanodoping can improve the breakdown strength of polyethylene (PE) nanocomposites. Research indicates that traps, free volumes, and molecular displacement are key factors affecting the breakdown strength. This study comprehensively considered the space charge transport, electron energy gain, and molecular chain long-distance movement during the electrical breakdown process. In addition, we established three simulation models focusing on the electric field distortion due to space charges captured by traps, the energy gain of mobile electrons in free volumes, the free volume expansion caused by long-distance movement of molecular chains under the Coulomb force, and the energy gained by the electrons moving in the enlarged free volumes. The three simulation models considered the electrical breakdown modulated by space charges, with a maximum electric field criterion and a maximum electron energy criterion, and the electrical breakdown modulated by the molecular displacement (EBMD), with a maximum electron energy criterion. These three models were utilized to simulate the breakdown strength dependent on the nanofiller content of PE nanocomposites. The simulation results of the EBMD model coincided best with the experimental results. It was revealed that the breakdown electric field of PE nanodielectrics is improved synergistically by both the strong trapping effect of traps and the strong binding effect of molecular chains in the interfacial regions.

The rapid growth of power grid capacity and the widespread use of a large number of power electronics and non-linear loads have led to harmonics in the power system. Harmonics in the power system will cause safety hazards to the normal operation of power equipment, exacerbate the aging of insulation materials, and reducing the overall operation reliability of the system. In the present work, we used power frequency ac voltage superimposed harmonics to carry out ageing experiments on power cable terminals. Then, we tested the infrared spectra, dielectric spectra, electrical conductivity, and surface potential decay characteristics of silicone rubber insulation materials on the cable terminals aged for different times. The experimental results show that the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of silicone rubber gradually increase with the aging time. In particular, the dielectric loss of silicone rubber changed greatly at low frequencies. The effect of dc conductance of aged silicone rubber on dielectric loss is significantly enhanced at low frequencies, which causes the dielectric loss to increase as the frequency decreases following an inverse power law. The surface potential decay rates of silicone rubber insulation after positive and negative corona charging accelerate with increasing the aging time, which is consistent with the experimental results of electrical conductivity. By analyzing the distribution characteristics of electron and hole traps in silicone rubbers, it is found that the trap energy levels of electron and hole traps become shallower as the operating time increases. The calculation of the carrier hopping conduction model shows that the shallow trap formed with increasing the aging time will lead to increases in both carrier mobility and conductivity. When the conductivity rises to a certain value, the silicone rubber will lose its insulation performance, resulting in insulation failure.

Differential-output D-dot sensor is indispensable to monitor the performance of the pulsed power facility. The sensitivity of the D-dot monitor is determined by the capacitance of the sensor’s high-voltage arm which is dependent on the temperature of the dielectric within the measured component. Herein, the influence of the temperature on the sensitivity of the D-dot monitor mounted in a water-insulated transmission line is investigated by experiments and confirmed by transient electromagnetic simulation. The amplitude-frequency response properties of the D-dot sensor under different temperatures of the deionized water are measured. The experimental results demonstrate that the capacitance of the D-dot sensor’s high-voltage arm decreases almost linearly with respect to the temperature and the sensitivity increases by about 9.7% when the temperature raises from 9.4°C to 28.3°C. We have also calculated the capacitance of the D-dot monitor’s high-voltage arm by transient electromagnetic simulation at a specific relative permittivity of the water medium. The relative permittivities of the water under different temperatures are acquired which are very close to the results from the previous empirical formula. The approach presented herein is readily adapted to any liquid dielectrics and it is also a novelty for the measurement of the relative permittivity of liquid dielectrics.
