Nanoparticles currently in use are challenged in further improving the dielectric strength of insulating oil. There is a great need for a new type of nanoparticle to promote the application of insulating oil-based nanofluids in electric industries. This paper experimentally investigates the effect of nanoparticle morphology on pre-breakdown and breakdown properties of insulating oil-based nanofluids. The positive impulse breakdown voltage of insulating oil can be significantly increased by up to 55.5% by the presence of TiO2 nanorods, up to 1.23 times that of TiO2 nanospheres. Pre-breakdown streamer propagation characteristics reveal that streamer discharge channels turn into a bush-like shape with much denser and shorter branches in the nanofluid with TiO2 nanorods. Moreover, the propagation velocity of streamers is dramatically decreased to 34.7% of that in the insulating oil. The greater improvement of nanorods on the breakdown property can be attributed to the lower distortion of the electric field. Thus, when compared with nanospheres, pre-breakdown streamer propagation of nanofluid is much more suppressed with the addition of nanorods, resulting in a greater breakdown voltage.
Charge trapping and de-trapping properties can affect space charge accumulation and electric field distortion behavior in polymers. Dielectric materials may contain different types of traps with different energy distributions, and it is of interest to investigate the charge trapping/de-trapping dynamic processes in dielectric materials containing multiple discrete trap centers. In the present work, we analyze the charge trapping/de-trapping dynamics in materials with two discrete traps in two cases where charges are injected continuously or only for a very short period. The time dependent trapped charge densities are obtained by the integration of parts in the case of continuous charge injection. In the case of instantaneous charge injection, we simplify the charge trapping/de-trapping equations and obtain the analytical solutions of trapped charge densities, quasi-free charge density, and effective carrier mobility. The analytical solutions are in good agreement with the numerical results. Then, the space charge dynamics in dielectric materials with two discrete trapping centers are studied by the bipolar charge transport (BCT) model, consisting of charge injection, charge migration, charge trapping, de-trapping, and recombination processes. The BCT outputs show the time evolution of spatial distributions of space charge densities. Moreover, we also achieve the charge densities at the same position in the sample as a function of time by the BCT model. It is found that the DC poling duration can affect the energy distribution of accumulated space charges. In addition, it is found that the coupling dynamic processes will establish a dynamic equilibrium rather than a thermodynamic equilibrium in the dielectric materials.
Space charge accumulation in polypropylene (PP) affect the dielectric properties and breakdown strength of the material. The pre-injected charge in PP under the action of different polarity voltage is quantitatively characterized, and the effects of the pre-injected charge inside the dielectric on the dielectric properties and breakdown strength are measured and analyzed. Based on the molecular simulations, the influence mechanism of the temperature on dielectric properties and breakdown are discussed. The experimental results show that the injected charges in PP under the negative polarity voltage is significantly larger than that of the positive polarity. These charges have a great influence on the dielectric constant and breakdown performance of PP, and the effect is different for different charge polarity. The effect of negative polarity pre-voltage conditions on the dielectric constant is much greater than that of positive polarity, and the dielectric constant of PP decreases from 2.2 to 1.3, decreasing about 41% under the negative polarity pre-voltage. By contrast, the dielectric constant slightly increases under the effect of the homopolar preload. Furthermore, the breakdown strength of the dielectric after the heteropolar preload is 249 kV/mm, which is 36% lower than that of PP without pre-voltage, and it slightly increases after the positive polarity pre-voltage. As the temperature increases, the increase in free volume favors the development of electron collision ionization and electron collapse processes, leading to a decrease in breakdown voltage at high temperatures. This work has a good guiding significance for the comprehensive evaluation of energy storage parameters.

Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) and uniaxially oriented polypropylene (UOPP) films were annealed. The effect of annealing temperature (Ta) on dielectric strength was studied. The electric breakdown strength (Eb) of BOPP and UOPP films changes in a quite different trend with the annealing process. Eb of BOPP films decreases with the increase in Ta, whereas Eb of UOPP films increases first and then decreases with Ta. The structural changes during annealing were investigated. The crystallinity rises with Ta, while the orientation degree and Eb show a similar trend with Ta. Although the crystallinity and crystal structure can affect Eb of polypropylene films, the orientation of chain segments has a much larger correlation with Eb. Our results indicate that the deterioration of the metallized BOPP film capacitor may originate from the orientation degree decrease of chain segments after experiencing high temperature.
This paper describes the effects of α-Al2O3 nanosheets on the direct current voltage breakdown strength and space charge accumulation in crosslinked polyethylene/α-Al2O3 nanocomposites. The α-Al2O3 nanosheets with a uniform size and high aspect ratio were synthesized, surface-modified, and characterized. The α-Al2O3 nanosheets were uniformly distributed into a crosslinked polyethylene matrix by mechanical blending and hot-press crosslinking. Direct current breakdown testing, electrical conductivity tests, and measurements of space charge indicated that the addition of α-Al2O3 nanosheets introduced a large number of deep traps, blocked the charge injection, and decreased the charge carrier mobility, thereby significantly reducing the conductivity (from 3.25 × 10−13 S/m to 1.04 × 10−13 S/m), improving the direct current breakdown strength (from 220 to 320 kV/mm) and suppressing the space charge accumulation in the crosslinked polyethylene matrix. Besides, the results of direct current breakdown testing and electrical conductivity tests also showed that the surface modification of α-Al2O3 nanosheets effectively improved the direct current breakdown strength and reduced the conductivity of crosslinked polyethylene/α-Al2O3 nanocomposites.
