In this work, a comprehensive investigation of the composite Ag@AgCl/ZnCo2O4 microspheres photocatalyst, prepared by a facile two-step method, is presented, and using complementary characterization tools such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). Results show that the composite Ag@AgCl/ZnCo2O4 photocatalyst has good microspheres morphology and high crystalline and its absorption intensity in the whole spectrum range is higher than that of pure ZnCo2O4. It is observed that the specific surface area of the composite Ag@AgCl/ZnCo2O4 photocatalyst and the adsorption efficiency of rhodamine B (RhB) increase as a result of deposition of Ag@AgCl. In the Ag@AgCl/ZnCo2O4 degradation system of RhB, the photocatalytic degradation rate of 0.2Ag@AgCl/ZnCo2O4 becomes 99.4% within 120 min, and RhB is almost completely degraded. The reaction rate constant of composite 0.2Ag@AgCl/ZnCo2O4 photocatalyst is found to be 0.01063 min−1, which is 1.6 times that of Ag@AgCl and 10 times of the minimum value of ZnCo2O4. In addition, the radical capture experiment indicates that, in the reaction system of Ag@AgCl/ZnCo2O4, the main oxidative species of Ag@AgCl/ZnCo2O4 photocatalyst are superoxide anion (O·− 2− 2) and hole (h+) and not hydroxyl radical (·OH). Based on the results, a Z-scheme plasmon photocatalytic mechanism of Ag@AgCl/ZnCo2O4 composite system is proposed, to elucidate the RhB degradation.

Organic pollutants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) exhibit persistence, bioaccumulation, resistance to degradation, and high toxicity, garnering significant attention from scholars worldwide. To better address and mitigate the environmental risks posed by PFASs, this paper employs bibliometric analysis to examine the literature on PFASs’ concentrations collected in the Web of Science (WoS) database between 2019 and 2024. The results show that the overall trend of PFASs’ pollution research is relatively stable and increasing. In addition, this study also summarizes the pollution status of traditional PFASs across different environmental media in typical freshwater basins. It analyzes PFASs’ concentrations in surface water, sediment, and aquatic organisms, elucidating their distribution characteristics and potential sources. While perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) levels in water environments are declining annually, short-chain PFASs and their substitutes are emerging as primary pollutants. Short-chain PFASs are frequently detected in surface water, whereas long-chain PFASs tend to accumulate in sediments. In aquatic organisms, PFASs are more likely to concentrate in protein-rich organs and tissues. The environmental presence of PFASs is largely influenced by human activities, such as metal plating, fluoride industry development, and industrial wastewater discharge. Currently, the development of PFASs in China faces a complex dilemma, entangled by policy and legal constraints, industrial production demands, the production and use of new alternatives, and their regulation and restriction, creating a vicious cycle. Breaking this deadlock necessitates continuous and active scientific research on PFASs, particularly PFOS, with an emphasis on detailed investigations of environmental sources and sinks. Furthermore, ecological and health risk assessments were conducted using Risk Quotient (RQ) and Hazard Quotient (HQ) methods. Comprehensive comparison indicates that PFASs (such as PFOA) in the majority of freshwater basins are at a low-risk level (RQ < 0.1 or HQ < 0.2), PFOS in some freshwater basins is at a medium-risk level (0.1 < RQ < 1), and no freshwater basin is at a high-risk level. The adsorption and removal approaches of PFASs were also analyzed, revealing that the combination of multiple treatment technologies as a novel integrated treatment technology holds excellent prospects for the removal of PFASs.

MXene has drawn widespread attention as a potential material for electrode use in capacitive deionization (CDI). However, the applications of MXene are limited by its property of low electrical capacity. Herein, a MnO2/MXene composite was firstly evaluated in a capacitive deionization system, in which the MnO2 acts as intercalation-type pseudocapacitive electrodes to enhance the electrical capacity, and MXene provides an electron conduction highway network that improves the charge transfer of the MnO2. The result showed that the low-crystallinity MnO2 with irregular particles was well-distributed on the surface of the MXene. The desalination capacity of 30.5 mg·g−1 is achieved at a voltage window of 1.2 V, which was higher than that of the reported pure MXene and MnO2. The electrical double-layer (EDL) capacitive and the diffusion-controlled processes are the main charge storage mechanisms, and the EDL contribution provides 50.3% to the total capacitance. This result suggests a promising direction for further applying a MnO2/MXene composite in CDI.
