The rapid development of urbanization and population growth in China has posed a major threat to the green sustainable development of the ecological environment. However, the impact of urbanization on the eco-environmental quality (EEQ) in China remains to be developed. Understanding their interactive coupling mechanism is of great significance to achieve the urban sustainable development goals. By using multi-source remote sensing data and the coupling coordination degree model (CCDM), we intended to answer the question “What are the temporal and spatial characteristics of urbanization and EEQ in China on the pixel scale during 2000–2013, and what is the coupling mechanism between the urbanization and the EEQ?”. To answer these questions, we explored the coupling mechanism between urbanization and the EEQ in China with a combined mathematical and graphics model. The results show that the urbanization and the coupling coordination degree (CCD) of the whole region continually increased from 2000 to 2013, especially in the three major urban agglomerations, with a spatial distribution pattern that was “high in the east and low in the west”. Most importantly, from 2000 to 2013, the CCD type of cities in China gradually evolved from uncoordinated cities to coordinated cities. Additionally, the decisive factor affecting the CCD from 2000 to 2013 was the development of urbanization, and the degree at which urbanization had an impact on CCD was about 8.4 times larger than that of the EEQ. At the same time, the rapid urbanization that has occurred in some areas has led to a significant decline in the EEQ, thus indicating that China needs to increase its protection of the ecological environment while pursuing social and economic development in the future. This study makes up for the deficiencies in the existing literature and investigates the long-term coupling of the EEQ and urbanization in China, thereby providing a new research perspective for the sustainable development of China and even the world in the future.

The “Kökyar Greening Project” in the suburb of Aksu, Xinjiang, is a model of large-area artificial afforestation in an environment of drought and water scarcity. As an important part of the “3-North Shelter Forest Program”, it plays an important role in promoting the economic development and the environmentally friendly construction of Aksu and even of the whole Xinjiang region. Based on multisource remote-sensing data and meteorological observation data, this study explored the temporal and spatial changes in the vegetation parameters (FVC, NPP, and VEQI) and the ecological parameters (RSEI and LULC) in the Kökyar Project Area from 2000 to 2021. Based on the Theil–Sen median and TSS-RESTREND, this study investigated the path of mutual influence among the FVC, NPP, VEQI, and RSEI, as well as their responses to climate change and human activities. The results show that: (1) from 2000 to 2021, the FVC, NPP, VEQI, and RSEI in the Kökyar Project Area showed a significant upward trend and showed the distribution characteristics of “high in the south and low in the north”. (2) Over the past 22 years, the RSEI has shown a significant increase with the FVC, NPP and VEQI (p < 0.001), indicating that the “Kökyar Greening Project” has achieved significant ecological benefits. (3) The changes in the vegetation parameters and RSEI in the Kökyar Project Area were dominated by human activities. (4) The Kökyar Project Area has caused great changes to the ecosystem pattern of the region, and the vegetation parameters and RSEI in the Kökyar Project Area have increased, mainly in the form of cropland and grassland expansion over the past 22 years.

This work discusses the accuracy of C-2PO (C-band cross-polarized ocean backscatter) and CMOD4 (C-band model) geophysical model functions (GMF) for sea surface wind speed retrieval from satellite-born Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images over in the Northwest Pacific off the coast of China. In situ observations are used for comparison of the retrieved wind speed using two established wind retrieval models: C-2PO model and CMOD4 GMF. Using 439 samples from 92 RADARSAT-2 fine quad-polarization SAR images and corresponding reference winds, we created two subset wind speed databases: the training and testing subsets. From the training data subset, we retrieve ocean surface wind speeds (OSWSs) from different models at each polarization and compare with reference wind speeds. The RMSEs of SAR-retrieved wind speeds are: 2.5 m/s: 2.11 m/s (VH-polarized), 2.13 m/s (HV-polarized), 1.86 m/s (VV-polarized) and 2.26 m/s (HH-polarized) and the correlation coefficients are 0.86 (VH-polarized), 0.85(HV-polarized), 0.87(VV-polarized) and 0.83 (HH-polarized), which are statistically significant at the 99.9% significance level. Moreover, we found that OSWSs retrieved using C-2PO model at VH-polarized are most suitable for moderate-to-high winds while CMOD4 GMF at VV-polarized tend to be best for low-to-moderate winds. A hybrid wind retrieval model is put forward composed of the two models, C-2PO and CMOD4 and sets of SAR test data are used in order to establish an appropriate wind speed threshold, to differentiate the wind speed range appropriate for one model from that of the other. The results show that the OSWSs retrieved using our hybrid method has RMSE of 1.66 m/s and the correlation coefficient are 0.9, thereby significantly outperforming both the C-2PO and CMOD4 models.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery plays an important role in observing tropical cyclones (TCs). However, the C-band attenuation caused by rain bands and the problem of signal saturation at high wind speeds make it impossible to retrieve the fine structure of TCs effectively. In this paper, a dual-level contextual attention generative adversarial network (DeCA-GAN) is tailored for reconstructing SAR wind speeds in TCs. The DeCA-GAN follows an encoder–neck–decoder architecture, which works well for high wind speeds and the reconstruction of a large range of low-quality data. A dual-level encoder comprising a convolutional neural network and a self-attention mechanism is designed to extract the local and global features of the TC structure. After feature fusion, the neck explores the contextual features to form a reconstructed outline and up-samples the features in the decoder to obtain the reconstructed results. The proposed deep learning model has been trained and validated using the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) atmospheric model product and can be directly used to improve the data quality of SAR wind speeds. Wind speeds are reconstructed well in regions of low-quality SAR data. The root mean square error of the model output and ECMWF in these regions is halved in comparison with the existing SAR wind speed product for the test set. The results indicate that deep learning methods are effective for reconstructing SAR wind speeds.

A total of 168 fully polarimetric synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images are selected together with the buoy measurements of ocean surface wind fields and high-frequency radar measurements of ocean surface currents. Our objective is to investigate the effect of the ocean currents on the retrieved SAR ocean surface wind fields. The results show that, compared to SAR wind fields that are retrieved without taking into account the ocean currents, the accuracy of the winds obtained when ocean currents are taken into account is increased by 0.2–0.3 m/s; the accuracy of the wind direction is improved by 3 – 4 ° . Based on these results, a semi-empirical formula for the errors in the winds and the ocean currents is derived. Verification is achieved by analysis of 52 SAR images, buoy measurements of the corresponding ocean surface winds, and high-frequency radar measurements of ocean currents. Results of the comparisons between data obtained by the semi-empirical formula and data measured by the high-frequency radar show that the root-mean-square error in the ocean current speed is 12.32 cm/s and the error in the current direction is 6.32°.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatiotemporal variations in wind field measurements obtained from the Chinese FengYun-3E (FY-3E) Wind Radar (WindRAD) scatterometer. To assess the performance of the wind field retrievals, we compare the FY-3E WindRAD measurements to ERA5 winds, which is the fifth-generation reanalysis global atmosphere dataset from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The comparative analysis between FY-3E and ERA5 from June 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022, revealed that FY-3E wind speed retrievals have a bias of -0.42 m/s and a standard deviation (STD) of 1.45 m/s. In comparison to the TAO/TRITON array observations, the wind speed retrievals showed a bias of -0.70 m/s and a STD of 1.37 m/s. Further improvements in wind direction retrieval precision are necessary for FY-3E WindRAD scatterometer to meet operational requirements, aiming for an error within 20°. Temporal variations in the bias and STD of FY-3E wind speed retrievals have exhibited two states, primarily attributed to the improved precision in wind field accuracy resulting from the implementation of the ocean calibration bias correction and advanced inversion algorithms. The spatial distribution analysis reveals regions characterized by relatively high bias and STD values, which could be associated to the presence of sea ice contamination near the ice shelves in these areas. The findings have the potential to offer valuable insights for improving Earth’s climate monitoring capabilities and enhancing the applications of oceanographic satellite observation systems.
