The rapid development of different social media and content-sharing platforms has been largely exploited to spread misinformation and fake news that make people believing in harmful stories, which allow to influence public opinion, and could cause panic and chaos among population. Thus, fake news detection has become an important research topic, aiming at flagging a specific content as fake or legitimate. The fake news detection solutions can be divided into three main categories: content-based, social context-based, and knowledge-based approaches. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid fake news detection system that combines linguistic and knowledge-based approaches and inherits their advantages, by employing two different sets of features: (1) linguistic features (i.e., title, number of words, reading ease, lexical diversity, and sentiment), and (2) a novel set of knowledge-based features, called fact-verification features that comprise three types of information namely, (i) reputation of the website where the news is published, (ii) coverage , i.e., number of sources that published the news, and (iii) fact-check , i.e., opinion of well-known fact-checking websites about the news, i.e., true or false. The proposed system only employs eight features, which is less than most of the state-of-the-art approaches. Also, the evaluation results on a fake news dataset show that the proposed system employing both types of features can reach an accuracy of 94.4%, which is better compared to that obtained from separately employing linguistic features (i.e., accuracy=89.4%) and fact-verification features (i.e., accuracy=81.2%).

In this paper, we propose H-IDFS, a Histogram-based Intrusion Detection and Filtering framework, which assembles the CAN packets into windows, and computes their corresponding histograms. The latter are fed to a multi-class IDS classifier to identify the class of the traffic windows. If the window is found malicious, the filtering system is invoked to filter out the normal CAN packets from each malicious window. To this end, we propose a novel one-class SVM, named OCSVM-attack that is trained on normal traffic and considers the invariant and quasi-invariant features of the attack. Experimental results on two CAN datasets: OTIDS and Car-Hacking, show the superiority of the proposed H-IDFS, as it achieves an accuracy of 100% for window classification, and correctly filters out between 94.93% and 100% of normal packets from malicious windows.

Multicontroller software‐defined networks have been widely adopted to enable management of large‐scale networks. However, they are vulnerable to several attacks including false data injection, which creates topology inconsistency among controllers. To deal with this issue, we propose BMC‐SDN, a security architecture that integrates blockchain and multicontroller SDN and divides the network into several domains. Each SDN domain is managed by one master controller that communicates through blockchain with the masters of the other domains. The master controller creates blocks of network flow updates, and its redundant controllers validate the new block based on a proposed reputation mechanism. The reputation mechanism rates the controllers, i.e., block creator and voters, after each voting operation using constant and combined adaptive fading reputation strategies. The evaluation results demonstrate a fast and optimal detection of fraudulent flow rule injection.

Security analysts have shown that it is possible to compromise the mobile two-factor authentication applications that employ SMS-based authentication. In this paper, we consider that offloading mobile applications to the cloud, which is resource-rich and provides a more secure environment, represents a good solution when energy limitation and security constraints are raised. To this end, we propose an offloading architecture for the two-factor mutual authentication applications, and a novel two-factor mutual authentication scheme based on a novel mechanism, named virtual smart card. We also propose a decision-making process to offload the authentication application and its virtual smart card, based on three conditions: security, mobile device’s residual energy, and energy cost. We analytically derive from the energy cost formula, the lower-bound on the mobile application running time to perform offloading. We analyze and verify the security properties of the proposed architecture, and provide evaluation results of the two-factor mutual authentication protocol and the offloading decision-making process.

Constructing an efficient malware detection system requires taking into consideration two important aspects, which are the accuracy and the detection time. However, finding an appropriate balance between these two characteristics remains at this time a very challenging problem. In this paper, we present a real-time PE (Portable Executable) malware detection system, which is based on the analysis of the information stored in the PE-Optional Header fields (PEF). Our system used a combination of the Chi-square (KHI2) score and the Phi (ϕ) coefficient as feature selection method. We have evaluated our system using Rotation Forest classifier implemented in WEKA and we reached more than 97% of accuracy. Our system is able to categorize a file in 0.077 seconds, which makes it adequate for real-time detection of malware.

Malware have become the scourge of the century, as they are continuously evolving and becoming more complex with increasing damages. Therefore, an adequate protection against such threats is vital. Behavior-based malware detection techniques have shown to be effective at overcoming the weaknesses of the signature-based ones. However, they are known for their high false alarms, which is still a very challenging problem. In this article, we address this shortcoming by proposing a rule-based behavioral malware detection system, which inherits the advantages of both signature and behavior-based approaches. We apply the proposed detection system on a combined set of three types of dynamic features, namely, (1) list of application programming interface calls; (2) application programming interface sequences; and (3) network traffic, which represents the IP addresses and domain names used by malware to connect to remote command-and-control servers. Feature selection and construction techniques, that is, term frequency–inverse document frequency and longest common subsequence, are performed on the three extracted features to generate new set of features, which are used to build behavioral Yet Another Recursive Acronym rules. The proposed malware detection approach is able to achieve an accuracy of 97.22% and a false positive rate of 4.69%.
