This research presents a novel aggregating method for constructing an aggregated topic model that is composed of the topics with greater coherence than individual models. When generating a topic model, a number of parameters have to be specified. The resulting topics can be very general or very specific, which depend on the chosen parameters. In this study we investigate the process of aggregating multiple topic models generated using different parameters with a focus on whether combining the general and specific topics is able to increase topic coherence. We employ cosine similarity and Jensen-Shannon divergence to compute the similarity among topics and combine them into an aggregated model when their similarity scores exceed a predefined threshold. The model is evaluated against the standard topics models generated by the latent Dirichlet allocation and Non-negative Matrix Factorisation. Specifically we use the coherence of topics to compare the individual models that create aggregated models against those of the aggregated model and models generated by Non-negative Matrix Factorisation, respectively. The results demonstrate that the aggregated model outperforms those topic models at a statistically significant level in terms of topic coherence over an external corpus. We also make use of the aggregated topic model on social media data to validate the method in a realistic scenario and find that again it outperforms individual topic models.

The combination of multiple classifiers, commonly referred to as a classifier ensemble, has previously demonstrated the ability to improve classification accuracy in many application domains. As a result this area has attracted significant amount of research in recent years. The aim of this paper has therefore been to provide a state of the art review of the most well-known ensemble techniques with the main focus on bagging, boosting and stacking and to trace the recent attempts, which have been made to improve their performance. Within this paper, we present and compare an updated view on the different modifications of these techniques, which have specifically aimed to address some of the drawbacks of these methods namely the low diversity problem in bagging or the over-fitting problem in boosting. In addition, we provide a review of different ensemble selection methods based on both static and dynamic approaches. We present some new directions which have been adopted in the area of classifier ensembles from a range of recently published studies. In order to provide a deeper insight into the ensembles themselves a range of existing theoretical studies have been reviewed in the paper.

Application of sensor-based technology within activity monitoring systems is becoming a popular technique within the smart environment paradigm. Nevertheless, the use of such an approach generates complex constructs of data, which subsequently requires the use of intricate activity recognition techniques to automatically infer the underlying activity. This paper explores a cluster-based ensemble method as a new solution for the purposes of activity recognition within smart environments. With this approach activities are modelled as collections of clusters built on different subsets of features. A classification process is performed by assigning a new instance to its closest cluster from each collection. Two different sensor data representations have been investigated, namely numeric and binary. Following the evaluation of the proposed methodology it has been demonstrated that the cluster-based ensemble method can be successfully applied as a viable option for activity recognition. Results following exposure to data collected from a range of activities indicated that the ensemble method had the ability to perform with accuracies of 94.2% and 97.5% for numeric and binary data, respectively. These results outperformed a range of single classifiers considered as benchmarks.

Tailings ponds’ failure and environmental pollution make tailings monitoring very important. Remote sensing technology can quickly and widely obtain ground information and has become one of the important means of tailings monitoring. However, the efficiency and accuracy of traditional remote sensing monitoring technology have difficulty meeting the management needs. At the same time, affected by factors such as the geographical environment and imaging conditions, tailings have various manifestations in remote sensing images, which all bring challenges to the accurate acquisition of tailings information in large areas. By improving You Only Look Once (YOLO) v5s, this study designs a deep learning-based framework for the large-scale extraction of tailings ponds information from the entire high-resolution remote sensing images. For the improved YOLOv5s, the Swin Transformer is integrated to build the Swin-T backbone, the Fusion Block of efficient Reparameterized Generalized Feature Pyramid Network (RepGFPN) in DAMO-YOLO is introduced to form the RepGFPN Neck, and the head is replaced with Decoupled Head. In addition, sample boosting strategy (SBS) and global non-maximum suppression (GNMS) are designed to improve the sample quality and suppress repeated detection frames in the entire image, respectively. The model test results based on entire Gaofen-6 (GF-6) high-resolution remote sensing images show that the F1 score of tailings ponds is significantly improved by 12.22% compared with YOLOv5, reaching 81.90%. On the basis of both employing SBS, the improved YOLOv5s boots the mAP@0.5 of YOLOv5s by 5.95%, reaching 92.15%. This study provides a solution for tailings ponds’ monitoring and ecological environment management.

In this paper we investigate the combination of four machine learning methods for text categorization using Dempster's rule of combination. These methods include Support Vector Machine (SVM), kNN (Nearest Neighbor), kNN model-based approach (kNNM), and Rocchio. We first present a general representation of the outputs of different classifiers, in particular, modeling it as a piece of evidence by using a novel evidence structure called focal element triplet. Furthermore, we investigate an effective method for combining pieces of evidence derived from classifiers generated by a 10-fold cross-validation. Finally, we evaluate our methods on the 20-newsgroup and Reuters-21578 benchmark data sets and perform the comparative analysis with majority voting in combining multiple classifiers along with the previous result. Our experimental results show that the best combined classifier can improve the performance of the individual classifiers and Dempster's rule of combination outperforms majority voting in combining multiple classifiers.
