Dr. Romain Paillot, DipEPHE, PhD, HDR, began his research career in 1995 in the field of transplantation immunology. In 1998, he moved to a veterinary vaccine manufacturer to develop new immunological assays in several species. He moved to the AHT in 2004 to start a PhD on cell-mediated immunity induced by equine influenza virus and equine herpesvirus 1. From 2007 to 2012, his work focused on immunity and protection induced by several modern equine vaccines. Several superantigens produced by Streptococcus equi and S zooepidemicus were identified and investigated. Dr. Romain Paillot was head of immunology at the Animal Health Trust (Newmarket, UK) and ran a research group. In 2016, he was awarded a French habilitation to direct research from l’université de Caen Normandie. From 2018 to 2020, he was in charge of the Equine Health research at LABÉO (Research Division) where he took part in the equine infectious disease surveillance in France and Europe. He is a member of the International Committee for the organization of the 11th and 12th International Equine Infectious Diseases Conferences (2021 and 2024) and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He is now a Senior Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University (Faculty of Science & Engineering, ARU Writtle, UK). His work aimed to improve our understanding of immunity induced by pathogens during infection and by vaccination and to elucidate specific mechanisms used by pathogens to evade or deregulate the immune response.
