In this paper, physicochemical properties of pure Y2O3 and samarium (Sm)-doped Y2O3 transparent ceramics obtained via arc plasma melting are presented. Yttria powder with a selected molar fraction of Sm was first synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. High transparent yttria ceramics were obtained by arc plasma melting from both the pure and Sm oxide-doped powders. The morphological, chemical and physical properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The optical band gap was calculated from the absorption spectra so as to understand the electronic band structure of the studied materials. Samples indicate a series of luminescence bands in the visible region after excitation by laser light in the range from 210 to 250 nm. Magneto-optical measurements were carried out in the 300–800 nm range at room temperature. It can be seen that a maximum Verdet constant ca. 24.81 deg/T cm was observed for 405 nm and this value decreases with increasing wavelength. The potential usefulness of the polycrystalline material dedicated to optics devices is presented.

The aim of this work was to investigate the possibility of doping copper sulfide Cu2S with selected fifth-group elements, potentially having a positive effect on the thermoelectric properties of the resulting materials. For the selected model structures, theoretical calculations and an analysis of the electronic structure and changes in the enthalpy of formation due to doping were performed using the WIEN2k package employing the Full-Potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave (FP-LAPW) method within density functional theory (DFT) formalism. Polycrystalline materials with the nominal composition of Cu32S15X1 (X = P, As, Sb, Bi) were synthesized in quartz ampoules, then sintered using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique and “SPS melting” method. The chemical and phase compositions of the obtained sinters were studied by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additionally, investigations of thermoelectric properties, i.e., electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity in the temperature range 300–920 K, were performed. The results of this study indicate that only phosphorus is successfully incorporated into the Cu₂S structure.

K0.5Na0.5NbO3:xEu sol–gel powders and bulk samples were synthesized by means of a modified sol–gel method. Two types of samples were obtained via sintering at two temperatures. X-ray diffraction revealed the presence of the perovskite phase in materials obtained at both temperatures. Eu3+ emission and excitation studies were conducted to determine its luminescence response. For K0.5Na0.5NbO3:xEu sinters, the excitation spectra included narrow peaks in the VIS range due to the 5D0–7F1 and 5D0–7F2 relaxation processes. These transitions were indicative of the presence of Eu3+ at sites of low symmetry. Dielectric studies indicated that Eu2O3 affected the observed phase transitions. The influence of sintering temperature on structure and physicochemical properties was discussed.
