Terahertz (THz) molecular fingerprint sensing provides a powerful label-free tool for the detection of trace-amount samples. Due to the weak light–matter interaction, various metallic or dielectric metasurfaces have been adopted to enhance fingerprint absorbance signals. However, they suffer from strong background damping or complicated sample coating on patterned surfaces. Here, we propose an inverted dielectric metagrating and enhance the broadband THz fingerprint detection of trace analytes on a planar sensing surface. Enhancement of the broadband signal originates from the effects of evanescent waves at the planar interface, which are excited by multiplexed quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs). One can evenly boost the near-field intensities within the analytes by tuning the asymmetry parameter of quasi-BIC modes. The multiplexing mechanism of broadband detection is demonstrated by manipulating the incident angle of excitation waves and thickness of the waveguide layer. Compared to the conventional approach, the THz fingerprint peak value is dramatically elevated, and the largest peak enhancement time is 330. Our work gives a promising way to facilitate the metasensing of the THz fingerprint on a planar surface and will inspire universal THz spectral analysis for trace analytes with different physical states or morphologies.

Terahertz waves have found wide applications in the biological and medical areas. Since water is one of the most important ingredients in the biological systems, it is necessary to investigate its optical and dielectric properties in the terahertz range. These fundamental physical parameters play an important role in many applications, such as biological imaging and hyperthermia applications, and are temperature dependent. In order to shed more light on the property of temperature dependence, we performed a systematic investigation by changing the temperature of the water sample and using a terahertz time-domain spectrometer. The experimental results show that when the temperature increases from 275 K to 340 K, the refractive index and the complex dielectric constant of water increase noticeable, with the absorption coefficient increased observably. A good agreement is found between experimental data and the double Debye model.

With the rapid development of millimeter wave technology, it is a fundamental requirement to understand the permittivity of materials in this frequency range. This paper describes the dielectric measurement of undoped silicon in the E-band (60–90 GHz) using a free-space quasi-optical system. This system is capable of creating local plane wave, which is desirable for dielectric measurement in the millimeter wave range. Details of the design and performance of the quasi-optical system are presented. The principle of dielectric measurement and retrieval process are described incorporating the theories of wave propagation and scattering parameters. Measured results of a sheet of undoped silicon are in agreement with the published results in the literature, within a discrepancy of 1%. It is also observed that silicon has a small temperature coefficient for permittivity. This work is helpful for understanding the dielectric property of silicon in the millimeter wave range. The method is applicable to other electronic materials as well as liquid samples.

Dielectric metasurfaces typically have much lower terahertz (THz) optical losses than metallic metasurfaces and have attracted great attention in boosting trace sensing of THz molecular fingerprints. Previous studies usually neglect the losses of dielectric materials in their ideal physical models, and lack of experimental validation. Despite the low extinction coefficient of dielectric materials in metastructures, their optical losses cannot be neglected in practice, especially when their thicknesses are much larger than those of trace samples. This would hinder the retrieval of trace THz molecular fingerprints. In this work, we fabricate the THz dielectric metasurface of lossy silicon with a gold mirror and demonstrate its angle-multiplexed fingerprint metasensing scheme based on a series of guided mode resonances. We investigate the physical mechanism of silicon optical loss and mirror reflection. We discover that the use of a gold mirror in the lossy Si metastructure plays a critical role in boosting broadband THz fingerprint detection. Our method dramatically enhances the metasensing performance of the THz trace fingerprint, and the maximum enhancement is up to 98 times compared with conventional approaches. This article provides a powerful guide for the experimental study of trace THz fingerprint metasensing, which will inspire more THz trace sensing applications.

A polarization-insensitive broadband terahertz absorber based on single-layer graphene metasurface has been designed and simulated, in which the graphene metasurface is composed of isolated circular patches. After simulation and optimization, the absorption bandwidth of this absorber with more than 90% absorptance is up to 2 THz. The simulation results demonstrate that the broadband absorption can be achieved by combining the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonances on the graphene patches and the resonances caused by the coupling between them. The absorption bandwidth can be changed by changing the chemical potential of graphene and the structural parameters. Due to the symmetrical configuration, the proposed absorber is completely insensitive to polarization and have the characteristics of wide angle oblique incidence that they can achieve broadband absorption with 70% absorptance in the range of incident angle from 0° to 50° for both TE and TM polarized waves. The flexible and simple design, polarization insensitive, wide-angle incident, broadband and high absorption properties make it possible for our proposed absorber to have promising applications in terahertz detection, imaging and cloaking objects.

The irreversible electroporation with microsecond electric pulses is a new ablation technique adopted in the tumor therapy worldwide. On the other hand, the nsPEF (nanosecond pulsed electric field) has been proved to provide a means to induce immunogenic cell death and elicits antitumor immunity, which is under intensive in-vitro and in-vivo studies and in clinical trials. Normally, one needs two different types of electric pulse generators for producing the pulses in the ranges of nanosecond and microsecond, respectively. In order to realize these two types of tumor treatments in complementary and optimize electrical pulse parameters, we have developed a compact high-voltage pulse generator with a wide pulse width tuning range, based on a capacitor discharging configuration digitally controlled by a silicon carbide MOSFET switching array through a pair of optic-coupler drivers. The developed digital pulse generator is capable of adjusting: pulse width over 100ns-100μs, voltage over 0-2kV and repetition rate up to 1.2 kHz. The pulse generator is designed in simulation, implemented and verified in the in vitro and in vivo experiments. The pulse generator is shown to deliver a complementary treatment on Murine melanoma B16 cell lines, i.e. triggering the cell early apoptosis under the 300ns pulse stimulation while a complete killing under the 100ns pulses. The pulse generator is further demonstrated to induce antitumor immunity in a preliminary in vivo study on the mice model.
