Background/Objectives: Acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) presents a significant clinical challenge characterized by frequent hospitalizations, high mortality rates, and substantial healthcare costs. The united index of hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocytes and platelets (HALP) is a new indicator that reflects systemic inflammation and nutritional status. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic utility of the HALP score and hematological parameters in predicting short-term mortality among ADHF patients admitted to the coronary care unit (CCU). Methods: This investigation adopts a retrospective observational design, encompassing a cohort of patients with ADHF who were followed in the CCU at our medical institution between January 2019 and April 2024. Results: The cohort of 227 individuals was dichotomized into two subsets based on the presence or absence of short-term mortality in the hospital, resulting in 163 (71.8%) and 64 (28.2%) individuals in the survivor and exitus groups, respectively. Age was significantly higher in the exitus group (p-value = 0.004). Hemoglobin, lymphocyte count, platelet count, albumin, and HALP score were significantly higher in the survivor group (all p-values < 0.001). No significant difference was observed between the groups in terms of gender, diabetes mellitus (DM), coronary artery disease (CAD), or ejection fraction (EF), although hypertension (HT) prevalence was significantly higher in the exitus group (p-value = 0.038). ROC analysis demonstrated that hemoglobin, lymphocyte, albumin, and HALP score had significant discriminative power, with albumin showing the highest AUC (0.814). Conclusions: In conclusion, the HALP score and hematological parameters represent valuable prognostic feature for short-term mortality prediction in ADHF patients admitted to the CCU. These findings underscore the importance of early risk stratification and targeted interventions guided by comprehensive biomarker assessments in optimizing patient outcomes.

The purpose of this paper is to determine the variables of high importance affecting the mathematics achievement of the students of 12 Asia-Pacific countries participating in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018. For this purpose, we used random forest (RF), logistic regression (LR) and support vector machine (SVM) models to classify student achievement in mathematics. The variables affecting the student achievement in mathematics were examined by the feature importance method. We observed that the variables with the highest importance for all of the 12 Asia-Pacific countries we considered are the educational status of the parents, having access to educational resources, age, the time allocated to weekly lessons, and the age of starting kindergarten. Then we applied two different clustering analysis by using the variable importance values and socio-economic variables of these countries. We observed that Korea, Japan and Taipei form one group of Asia-Pacific countries, while Thailand, China, Indonesia, and Malaysia form another meaningful group in both clustering analyses. The results we obtained strongly suggest that there is a quantifiable relationship between the educational attainment and socio-economic levels of these 12 Asia-Pacific countries.

Educational Data Mining (EDM) is an important tool in the field of classification of educational data that helps researchers and education planners analyse and model available educational data for specific needs such as developing educational strategies. Trends International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) which is a notable study in educational area was used in this research. EDM methodology was applied to the results of TIMSS 2015 that presents data culled from eighth grade students from Turkey. The main purposes are to find the algorithms that are most appropriate for classifying the successes of students, especially in science subjects, and ascertaining the factors that lead to this success. It was found that logistic regression and support vector machines – poly kernel are the most suitable algorithms. A diverse set of features obtained by feature selection methods are “Computer Tablet Shared”, “Extra Lessons Last 12 Month”, “Extra Lessons How Many Month”, “How Far in Education Do You Expect to Go”, “Home Educational Resources”, and “Student Confident in Science” and these features are the most effective features in science success. Keywords: classification algorithms, educational data mining, eighth grade, science success, TIMSS 2015.
