Building Energy and Comfort Management (BECM) systems have the potential to considerably reduce costs related to energy consumption and improve the efficiency of resource exploitation, by implementing strategies for resource management and control and policies for Demand-Side Management (DSM). One of the main requirements for such systems is to be able to adapt their management decisions to the users’ specific habits and preferences, even when they change over time. This feature is fundamental to prevent users’ disaffection and the gradual abandonment of the system. In this paper, a sensor-based system for analysis of user habits and early detection and prediction of user activities is presented. To improve the resulting accuracy, the system incorporates statistics related to other relevant external conditions that have been observed to be correlated (e.g., time of the day). Performance evaluation on a real use case proves that the proposed system enables early recognition of activities after only 10 sensor events with an accuracy of 81 % . Furthermore, the correlation between activities can be used to predict the next activity with an accuracy of about 60 % .

Digital holography represents a novel media which promises to revolutionize the way the users interacts with content. This paper presents an in-depth review of the state-of-the-art algorithms for advanced processing and rendering of computer-generated holography. Open-access holographic data are selected and characterized as references for the experimental analysis. The design of a tool for digital hologram rendering and quality evaluation is presented and implemented as an open-source reference software, with the aim to encourage the approach to the holography research area, and simplify the rendering and quality evaluation tasks. Exploration studies focused on the reproducibility of the results are reported, showing a practical application of the proposed architecture for standardization activities. A final discussion on the results obtained is reported, also highlighting the future developments of the reconstruction software that is made publicly available with this work.

In the past few years, the Smart City concept became one of the main driving forces for the transition towards sustainable economy and improved mobility. Tourism, as one of the fastest growing economies worldwide, is an integrated part of the Smart City paradigm. Taking into consideration recent studies performed by the United Nations, stating that almost one third of the population is directly affected by disability, the concept of Accessible Tourism needs also to be integrated in the future vision for tourism, especially in the context of Smart Cities, environments fully benefiting from the recent technological advances. Within the combined framework of Smart Cities and Accessible Tourism, the Internet-of-Things (IoT) concept is the key technological point for the development of smart urban environments. IoT and big data are both technology-driven developments, leading to scenarios such as the Smart Cities one that has the potential to make citizen live smarter, more sustainable and more accessible. This chapter analyses the key requirements for IoT applications in a Smart City context, the state-of-the-art for the use of IoT for Accessible Tourism applications and proposes an architecture together with its practical implementation, tailored for the use-case of accessible tourism for physically impaired persons.

The combined effect of large scale adoption of mobile communications, recent advent of Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) promoted by Internet of Things (IoT) and unprecedented diversification of the next generation networked applications offers new opportunities for further advancements of wireless communications. In this work, an innovative solution and a low-power network communication technology are proposed to be employed in conjunction in a real-world scenario in a smart city environment. The paper introduces the energy-efficient multi-hop communication solution (e2McH) which performs energy-efficient communications in multi-hop manner over LPWAN, employing narrowband technologies. Experimental testing involving deployment of the proposed solution over two licensed industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) bands shows how e2McH can be used to cover successfully an area with a radius of roughly 14 km.

Research on multimedia data coding is allowing for better performance in terms of compression ratio, coding features, and robustness against transmission errors. While rate-distortion performance is being improved at a slower pace if compared to what we were used to up to a decade ago, remarkable advances are being made by adding complex features, such as fast adaptive transforms, lossy to lossless coding, compressed domain processing, etc. One of the latest codec which is expected to improve on the state of the art is the WebP algorithm released by Google. In this paper we provide an objective evaluation of WebP, by comparing it with the JPEG family algorithms. From the results it appears that the performance of the proposed codec is in line with that of the alternative methods, without achieving any major improvement and lacking several features.

Authentication is the way of identifying an individual. The techniques used to accomplish such practice strongly depend on the involved parties, their interconnection, and the required level of security. In all cases, authentication is used to enforce property protection, and may be specifically intended for the copyright protection of digital contents published on the Internet. This chapter introduces the basic concepts of authentication, explaining their relationship with property protection. The basic functionalities of challenge-response frameworks are presented, together with several applications and the future trends.

Purpose of this paper is to present a technique combining IFS and wavelet decomposition to achieve spatial zoom and slow motion replay of digital color video sequences. Active scene detection, wavelet subband analysis and color fractal coding based on Earth mover's distance (EMD) measure are used to reduce computational load and to improve visual quality.

Super-resolution is a key task when browsing huge image databases over the Web; in fact, it allows for significant improvements of the service interactivity by increasing the image spatial resolution so that only thumbnail version of the images can be sent over the network. In the proposed work, the low-resolution image is first analyzed to identify several features that are significant for visual rendering and scene understanding. Such a classification is based on local frequency composition: uniform regions, edges and textures. The identified regions are then treated differently depending on the relative visual significance. Each region is further analyzed and a different interpolation approach is adopted, ranging from plain linear interpolation for homogeneous areas to edge area analysis and selective anisotropic interpolation. The combination of image region classification and adaptive-anisotropic interpolation is the main novelty of the proposed approach, which proved to outperform alternative techniques.

This paper focuses on the problem of key-frames coding and proposes a new promising approach based on the use of fractals. The summary, made of a set of key-frames selected from a full-length video sequence, is coded by using a 3D fractal scheme. This allows the video presentation tool to expand the video sequence in a “natural” way by using the property of the fractals to reproduce the signal at several resolutions. This feature represents an important novelty of this work with respect to the alternative approaches, which mainly focus on the compression ratio without taking into account the presentation aspect of the video summary. In devising the coding scheme, we have taken care of the computational complexity inherent in fractal coding. Accordingly, the key-frames are first wavelet transformed, and the fractal coding is then applied to each subband to reduce the search range. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A novel framework for image-based authentication (IBA) is proposed and evaluated. The proposed system relies on data and application scalability in order to optimize its performance in several environments, from wired applications to mobile authentication. Data scalability is exploited through the JPEG2000 standard and JPIP framework. The wireless environment, in particular, imposes severe constraints on data transmission capability and user friendliness, which are satisfied by the devised system

Motivated by the need for designing secure and user-friendly authentication method for mobile devices, we present a novel image-based authentication (IBA) scheme in this paper. Its mnemonics efficacy rests on the human cognitive ability of association-based memorization. To tackle the shoulder-surfing attack issue, an interactive authentication process is presented. System performance analysis and comparisons with other schemes are presented to support our proposals.
