This research focused on developing a methodology that facilitates the learning of control engineering students, specifically developing skills to design a complete control loop using fuzzy logic. The plant for this control loop is a direct current motor, one of the most common actuators used by educational and professional engineers. The research was carried out on a platform developed by a group of students. Although the learning techniques for the design and implementation of controllers are extensive, there has been a delay in teaching techniques that are relatively new compared to conventional control techniques. Then, the hands-on laboratory offers a tool for students to acquire the necessary skills in driver tuning. In addition to the study of complete systems, the ability to work in a team is developed, a fundamental skill in the professional industrial area. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of student learning was carried out, integrating a multidisciplinary project based on modern tools.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are an alternative to internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, as they can reduce the environmental impact of transportation. The bottleneck for EVs is the high-voltage battery pack, which utilizes most of the space and increases the weight of the vehicle. Currently, the main challenge for the electronics industry is the cell equalization of the battery pack. This paper gives an overview of the research works related to battery equalizer circuits (BECs) used in EV applications. Several simulations were carried out for the main BEC topologies with the same initial conditions. The results obtained were used to perform a quantitative analysis between these schemes. Moreover, this review highlights important issues, challenges, variables and parameters associated with the battery pack equalizers and provides recommendations for future investigations. We think that this work will lead to an increase in efforts on the development of an advanced BEC for EV applications.

The objective of this work is to design and implement a scalable Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)-based motion control system for DC servo motors using a parabolic velocity profile for industrial applications. The implementation in this device allows the obtaining of a fast, flexible and low-cost system. The system is divided into control, communication and closed-loop coupling. The work also addresses a comparative analysis of the most used profiles, the trapezoidal and parabolic. The comparison is made considering the energy consumption of both profiles. As a consequence of the comparison made, the velocity profile can be selected to reduce production costs by saving energy and reducing wear on machinery. The discrete models of the velocity profiles are obtained through numerical methods that permit the control blocks to be implemented in an FPGA. To reduce maintenance costs and energy consumption in servo mechanisms, the derivation of the acceleration or jerk of the motor is shown. A Graphic User Interface (GUI) is presented, which allows monitoring the position, velocity and angular acceleration of the motor shaft. In addition, the developed interface supports modification of parameters of the final position and maximum velocity in the motor. The delivered current is compared, evaluating its decrease using a parabolic velocity profile. Finally, the experimental results are illustrated.

Since 1996, the California Air Resources Board has established the OBD-II as a communication protocol that systems use to control gas emissions. Such a standard was created in 1988 and allows modern vehicles to obtain technical engine data such as fuel injection, speed, and air mass flow. In this article, an experimental test bench is presented using the Raspberry-Pi 3 programming board and a serial connection to the OBD-II port. Also, the standard ELM327 is employed as a connection adapter to analyze data sets and to calculate the ideal time for hydrogen injection. This process is achieved by an in-situ generator as a supplementary fuel source for internal combustion engines. It permits the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and improves fuel efficiency, as it has already been reported in multiple previous types of research. The methodology describes the process of acquiring data through the OBD-II port, the type of hydrogen generator, and the calibration implemented according to expert system rules as well as the installation process of the system in the experimental vehicle. The developed algorithm is implemented using the programming language Python to determine the ideal time for activating the hydrogen generator. The results include simulation behavior of the fuzzy logic algorithm in Matlab of vehicle engine for its comparison with the validated results and offer a proposal to optimize hydrogen injection for future researches. Then, the efficiency of electrolyzer in ICE is improved by extending the lifetime of the entire device and the electrolyte.

At present, renewable energies represent 25% of the global power generation capacity. The increase in clean energy facilities is mainly due to the high levels of pollution generated by the burning of fossil fuels to satisfy the growing electricity demand. The global capacity of generating electricity from solar energy has experienced a significant increase, reaching 505 GW in 2018. Today, multilevel inverters are used in PV systems to convert direct current into alternating current. However, the use of multilevel inverters in renewable energies applications presents different challenges; for example, grid-connected systems use a transformer to avoid the presence of leakage currents. The grid-connected systems must meet at least two international standards analyzed in this work: VDE 0126-1-1 and VDE-AR-N 4105, which establish a maximum leakage current of 300 mA and harmonic distortion maximum of 5%. Previously, DC/AC converters have been studied in different industrial applications. The state-of-the-art presented in the work is due to the growing need for a greater use of clean energy and the use of inverters as an interface between these technologies and the grid. Also, the paper presents a comparative analysis of the main multilevel inverter voltage-source topologies used in transformerless PV systems. In each scheme, the advantages and disadvantages are presented, as well as the main challenges. In addition, current trends in grid-connected systems using these schemes are discussed. Finally, a comparative table based on input voltage, switching frequency, output levels, control strategy used, efficiency, and leakage current is shown.

Nowadays, research on electric vehicles is increasing because they have the potential to decrease greenhouse-gas emissions dramatically in the transport sector. For these types of vehicles, the battery is one of the main components. The traction system needs a cell series connection to fulfill the energy requirements. Nevertheless, batteries differ from each other due to a normal dispersion in their capacity, internal resistance, and self-discharge rate. This paper presents a novel battery equalizer circuit using an RC-based topology to equalize two adjacent cells of a battery pack. It has the advantage of merging a resistor-based equalizer, a capacitor-based equalizer, and an RC-based equalizer in one circuit. In this way, it is possible to limit the current stress in the components of the circuit. The proposed method increases the equalization time by 35% for a threshold current of 4 A. However, it is possible design the system for another threshold current. Finally, the complexity of the controller is not compromised in the proposed architecture. The operation, analysis, and design of the architecture are presented and compared to the classic schemes. The theoretical analysis is validated through simulation results.

The rise in renewable energy has increased the use of DC/AC converters, which transform the direct current to alternating current. These devices, generally called inverters, are mainly used as an interface between clean energy and the grid. It is estimated that 21% of the global electricity generation capacity from renewable sources is supplied by photovoltaic systems. In these systems, a transformer to ensure grid isolation is used. Nevertheless, the transformer makes the system expensive, heavy, bulky and reduces its efficiency. Therefore, transformerless schemes are used to eliminate the mentioned disadvantages. One of the main drawbacks of transformerless topologies is the presence of a leakage current between the physical earth of the grid and the parasitic capacitances of the photovoltaic module terminals. The leakage current depends on the value of the parasitic capacitances of the panel and the common-mode voltage. At the same time, the common-mode voltage depends on the modulation strategy used. Therefore, by the manipulation of the modulation technique, is accomplished a decrease in the leakage current. However, the connection standards for photovoltaic inverters establish a maximum total harmonic distortion of 5%. In this paper an analysis of the common-mode voltage and its influence on the value of the leakage current is described. The main topologies and strategies used to reduce the leakage current in transformerless schemes are summarized, highlighting advantages and disadvantages and establishing points of comparison with similar topologies. A comparative table with the most important aspects of each converter is shown based on number of components, modes of operation, type of modulation strategy used, and the leakage current value obtained. It is important to mention that analyzed topologies present a variation of the leakage current between 0 to 180 mA. Finally, the trends, problems, and researches on transformerless grid-connected PV systems are discussed.

The DC/AC converters—commonly called inverters—transform the DC into AC and are classified as Voltage-Source Inverters (VSIs) or Current-Source Inverters (CSIs). A variant of the CSIs are the Multilevel Current-Source Inverters (MCSIs). In this paper, a new predictive control strategy for an MCSI with multiple inputs and grid-connected is proposed. The control technique uses the advantages of the Sliding Mode Control (SMC) for the balance of current in the input and Predictive Control (PC) to obtain a suitable grid current, since it separates both functions. The calculations are based on conventional Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law (KVL) and knowledge of the mathematical model of the system is not required. Generally, traditional MCSIs use large input inductors (100–1000 mH). In this paper, it is achieved a reduction in size of the input inductors. Simulation results are shown to validate the proposed control.
