Biography

Dr Cecilia Santos (orcid.org/0000-0001-6074-7825) is associate professor with habilitation in biomedicine and the responsible for the Oncobiology classes at the University of Beira Interior and has been leading a group focused in CP physiology for the last 17 years. She published 60 papers published in peer-review journals, 3 book chapters, has h-index of 22, (Scopus, September 2020) and was PI of three FCT funded projects (finished), and is currently member of the research team in five ongoing projects. On the lead of these and other studies, Dr Santos supervised 3 post-doctoral grants; 7 doctoral and 25 master thesis and is currently supervising 2 PhD thesis and 2 master thesis. Major research outputs were the demonstration that the choroid plexus is highly responsive to sex hormones with pronounced differences between rat males and females, the finding that the choroid plexus harbours a circadian clock and is a source of the hormone melatonin. More recently we found that the choroid plexus contains a vast variety of taste and odorant receptors with unknown functions but very likely involved in the chemical surveillance operated by this organ. Other interests include research in cancer biology most related to the tumor-blood barrier and a generalised interest in the blood-brain barrier.
