Recently, a low frequency driving of a fringe-field switching-liquid crystal display (FFS-LCD) draws much attention to minimize the power consumption. In the low frequency driving of FFS-LCD, an image flickering effect occurs when the sign of the electric field is reversed. We suggested a method to eliminate the image flickering effect by doping small amount of bent-core liquid crystal (BLC) molecules. The BLC molecules have an opposite sign of flexoelectric polarization and reduce the flexoelectric polarization of the host liquid crystal. By adding 2.0 wt% of BLC, the total transmittance during a positive and a negative electric field could be balanced and the image flickering effect was not observed by eyes.
We present a design of an ultra-broadband metamaterial absorber in the visible and near- infrared regions. The unit cell structure consists of a single layer of metallic truncated-pyramid resonator-dielectric-metal configuration, which results in a high absorption over a broad wavelength range. The absorber exhibits 98% absorption at normal incidence spanning a wideband range of 417–1091 nm, with >99% absorption within 822–1054 nm. The broadband absorption stability maintains 95% at large incident angles up to 40° for the transverse electric (TE)-mode and 20° for the transverse magnetic (TM)-mode. Furthermore, the polarization-insensitive broadband absorption is presented in this paper by analyzing absorption performance with various polarization angles. The proposed absorber can be applied for applications such as solar cells, infrared detection, and communication systems thanks to the convenient and compatible bandwidth for electronic THz sources.
We suggest a method to obtain a negative dispersion (ND) of birefringence using a two-dimensional self-organization of smectic liquid crystal (LC) and monomer molecules. The averaged orientation of the smectic LC was the layer normal direction with the extraordinary refractive index . Meanwhile, the orientation of the monomer molecules was templated by the host-smectic LC and parallel to the layer plane corresponding to the ordinary refractive index . We selected the LC molecules absorbing a shorter wavelength of UV light rather than the polymerized monomers, hence was more smoothly decreased than in the visible-wavelength range. Consequently, the birefringence was increased with a longer wavelength, thus giving a ND of birefringence. Using the proposed method, the ND of birefringence could be obtained in a single layer, which is desirable for thin flexible applications.
In this paper, we present a numerical study of a metamaterial absorber that provides polarization-insensitive absorption over a broad bandwidth of operation over the mid-infrared region. The absorber consists of a periodically patterned metal-dielectric-metal structure integrated with an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) nanolayer into the insulating dielectric gap region. Such an anomalous broadband absorber is achieved thanks to a couple of resonant modes including plasmon and ENZ modes that are excited under mid-IR light illumination. By adding a 0.06-μm-thick ENZ layer between the patterned gold rectangular grating and the SiO2 dielectric layer, the absorber captures >95% light over a 1.5 µm bandwidth centered at a near-8-μm wavelength over a wide range of oblique incidence under transverse-magnetic and -electric polarizations. The designed ENZ-based wideband absorber has potential for many practical applications, including sensing, imaging and solar energy harvesting over a wide frequency regime.
We report a method of broadening the reflection bandwidth of polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC). The top substrate was consecutively coated with a polyimide (PI) and a reactive mesogen (RM) layer, while the bottom substrate was coated with only PI. We exposed the top substrate with the RM coating to UV light. The reflection bandwidth of the PSCLC samples where the top substrate was over-coated with RM was significantly broader than the samples where both substrates were coated with PI. In addition to the effect of the UV intensity gradient, the RM-coated top substrate has a chemical affinity to bulk RM, promoting formation of the pitch gradient and broadening the reflection bandwidth in the sample.
A single layer retarder possessing negative dispersion (ND) of birefringence as well as wide field-of-view (FOV) was long-term objective in optical science. We synthesized new guest reactive monomers with x-shape and mixed them with the host smectic reactive mesogen. The host-guest molecules formed two dimensionally self-organized nanostructure and showed both the ND of birefringence and wide FOV properties. We simulated the antireflection property of a circular polarizer using the optical properties of the retarder. The average reflectance of the retarder was 0.52% which was much smaller than that of the commercial single layer ND retarder 1.83%.
