Motorway’s personnel tasks management and incidents monitoring, and response are critical processes that contribute to the motorway’s orderly and smooth operation. Existing management practices utilize SCADA technologies that control motorway actuator systems as well as various means of personnel communications mobile technologies. Nevertheless, contemporary motorways lack a unified incident response solution that tracks resources, sends notification alerts when necessary, and automates incident resolution. This paper presents a new holistic and unified management and response system called Resources Management System (RMS). This system was originally implemented as a generic motorways resources management system for the EGNATIA ODOS motorway that uses it in Greece. The implemented RMS provides real-time resources tracking, personnel utilization algorithms, and data mining capabilities towards incident confrontation. It operates as an incidents’ collection and resources central communication interface. It is also capable of incident response and completion time categorization; real-time tunnel exits sensory monitoring, staff mobilization, and tracking system. Furthermore, the RMS includes machine learning methodologies and smart agents (bots) for solving the problem of estimating and evaluating the response and completion time of incidents based on previous successful incidents’ confrontations.

Climate change significantly affects viticulture by reducing the production yield and the quality characteristics of its final products. In some observed cases, the consequences of climate outages such as droughts, hail and floods are absolutely devastating for the farmers and the sustained local economies. Hence, it is essential to develop new in implementation monitoring solutions that offer remote real-time surveillance, alert triggering, minimum maintenance and automated generation of incident alerts with precision responses. This paper presents a new framework and a system for vine stress monitoring called Vity-stress. The Vity-stress framework combines field measurements with precise viticulture suggestions and stress avoidance planning. The key points of the proposed framework’s system are that it is easy to develop, easy to maintain and cheap to implement applicability. Focusing on the Mediterranean cultivated table grape varieties that are strongly affected by climate change, we propose a new stress conditions monitoring system to support our framework. The proposition includes distributed field located sensors and a novel camera module implementing deep neural network algorithms to detect stress indicators. Additionally, a new wireless sensor network supported by the iBeacon protocol has been developed. The results of the sensory measurements’ data logging and imposed image detection process’s evaluation shows that the proposed system can successfully detect different stress levels in vineyards, which in turn can allow producers to identify specific areas for irrigation, thereby saving water, energy and time.

With the predominance of individual Bluetooth gadgets, smartphone user’s security and privacy have been an expanding concern. Until now, Bluetooth traffic sniffing has been regarded as a complex errand because of Bluetooth’s indiscoverable mode and adaptive hopping behavior. This paper presents a novel BLE Scanning system for motorway tunnels which its goal is to use Bluetooth Sniffing, guide and show the emergency exit receiving the RSSI values from users’ smartphones and thus, find the directionality of the users in real time, in case of an emergency in a tunnel. In addition, the authors proposed BLE Scanning system and presented the preliminary results that have been carried out in a tunnel in the largest motorway in Greece, named EGNATIA ODOS.

In the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) we often notice references of the concept of assistive technology (AT) for people with disabilities, but usually there is only a brief overview of the subject - there are few suggestions for experiments in HCI articles related to supportive technology. In addition, there is no extensive literature on the dynamics of tactile devices in the operation of supportive machines for use by people with disabilities. This research proposes tests of pre-treatment and post-treatment measurements in order to indicate changes relating to manual dexterity and grip force of people with the use of tactile devices (Haptics) according to the improvement of day-to-day operations of people with disabilities and especially people with motor skill problems and object manipulation.

This paper presents the preliminary results of the first stage of a proposed framework of existing image detection convolutional algorithms, and sets the image portable detector requirements, focusing on portable detection devices. Such devices perform image segmentation and transmit monitoring meta-data. Four pre-trained CNNs have been used to classify images of vehicles passing through toll posts, and the results are presented and compared. At subsequent stages of the presented framework certain types of vehicles will be detected and categorized, based on the type of cargo they carry. The proposed framework is wrapped by an appropriate system architecture which interacts with incident response or facility management systems, and tries to achieve precise speed/memory/accuracy balance for each targeted detection application accordingly. To this end, various ways are investigated and evaluated, to trade accuracy for speed and memory usage in modern mobile convolutional algorithm driven detection systems monitoring specific regions of interest. Such tradeoffs provide increased detection capabilities to incident response systems that interact with such detectors in real-time, or in post-processing with facility management systems for accurate and automated decisions adaptation.

Sensory and haptic data transfers to critical real-time applications over the Internet require better than best effort transport, strict timely and reliable ordered deliveries. Multi-sensory applications usually include video and audio streams with real-time control and sensory data, which aggravate and compress within real-time flows. Such real-time are vulnerable to synchronization to synchronization problems, if combined with poor Internet links. Apart from the use of differentiated QoS and MPLS services, several haptic transport protocols have been proposed to confront such issues, focusing on minimizing flows rate disruption while maintaining a steady transmission rate at the sender. Nevertheless, these protocols fail to cope with network variations and queuing delays posed by the Internet routers. This paper proposes a new haptic protocol that tries to alleviate such inadequacies using three different metrics: mean frame delay, jitter and frame loss calculated at the receiver end and propagated to the sender. In order to dynamically adjust flow rate in a fuzzy controlled manners, the proposed protocol includes a fuzzy controller to its protocol structure. The proposed FRTPS protocol (Fuzzy Real-Time haPticS protocol), utilizes crisp inputs into a fuzzification process followed by fuzzy control rules in order to calculate a crisp level output service class, denoted as Service Rate Level (SRL). The experimental results of FRTPS over RTP show that FRTPS outperforms RTP in cases of congestion incidents, out of order deliveries and goodput.

Museum visitors are very focused and demanding. Immersive technologies as virtual and augmented reality, interactive haptics, 3D scanning and plotting, content digitization, and personalized automatic navigation must be exploited by museums in order to stimulate museum visitors and extract their attention. The authors of this work propose an open source IoT InteRactive Museum Experience (IRME) framework. IRME offers information classified in thematic sections. The visitors have the opportunity to explore specific thematic sections of interest. Navigation instructions and artwork guidelines are obtained with the help of a smart phone application. Data-mining, artificial intelligence and cognitive services offer the ability to learn from visitor’s preferences and respond more accurately to future requests and in this way enhance visitor’s experience in the museum. IRME provides a real-time, responsive and personalized navigation to museum visitors. It includes indoor positioning technology, IoT sensors and actuators, haptic devices orchestrated over cloud services. Wherever possible, IRME uses low power technology such as Bluetooth Low Energy devices, led plates-spots-cubes and 3D printing modeling capabilities, in order to promote museum artifacts and to enhance the visitors’ knowledge acquisitions and entertainment. Moreover, the reflection of such recreational improvements to the visitors is also measured using IoT sensors and the results are used as feedback for future thematic land planning, and IoT illustration techniques.

This paper suggests a novel data mining algorithm for the evaluation of e-learning courses from a Learning Management System. This new algorithm, which is called S-Algo+ (Superposition Algorithm), takes as input the course rankings and the suggestion results from any kind of ranking/hierarchical algorithms and evaluates the validity of a course ranking position. The ranking algorithms estimate the quantity and quality of the course content according to users’ actions and interest. S-Algo+ generates an improved final ranking suggestion output, combining the best results of the source ranking algorithms using statistical and mathematic techniques. In this way, the researchers and course instructors can use more accurate results. The efficiency and applicability of the S-Algo+ algorithm was evaluated successfully with a cross-comparison quantitative and qualitative process in a case study at a Greek university. Our new proposed S-Algo+ algorithm may lead to both theoretical and practical advantages. It may also apply not only for course evaluation but for any kind of web application such as e-commerce.

Sensory data originating from IoT devices, after being received as encrypted over wireless channels, are plaintext stored in databases. However, if database data integrity, validity and safety must be ensured and additionally, IoT operations or actions implicitly require of non-repudiation, database encryption is a one-way path. Focusing on big IoT data, these encryption-decryption operations inflict database query time overheads, which in turn result in additional IoT operational delays and increased energy consumption at the wireless IoT motes. In this paper authors study the encryption performance of an open source database containing relational as well as non-relational JSONB IoT data fields and summarize their experimental results

Currently the industry moves to smaller process nodes even if the cost for yielding large dies continues to increase, moving to the 5nm and even 3nm nodes. Hence a chiplet-based design has been initiated and quickly gain attention from industry, academia and government agencies. This cutting edge approach became advantageous to break down a large die into smaller chiplets in order to improve yield and binning. In order to exploit this new approach the interconnect fabric connecting the nodes of the entire system should be of high importance to enable the properly distribution of the data. Each individual chiplet may contain its own local Network on Chip (NoC), which operates for intra-chiplet traffic. However the communication over chiplet-based systems is complicated enough, due to various routing algorithms and NoC topologies and an alternative solution is needed. In this paper we introduce an SDNoC(Software Define Network on Chip)-based communication protocol for chiplet-based systems, called MicroLET, which consists of a flexible and modular SDNoC architecture and 3 main phases: Handshake, Network Monitoring, Routing. An implementation of the SDNoC architecture and an evaluation of the proposed routing algorithm compared to the XY and the Odd-Even algorithms within different traffic scenarios is presented. Through the evaluation of the MicroLET protocol, it is proven that it could be a good candidate for the future chiplet-based systems.

The Greek taxation information system is now in the second decade of its operation. Although many weaknesses were recorded in the first decade, it has been operating sufficiently well during the last five years. One critical factor for the satisfactory performance for each information system is the acceptance by its users. The purpose of this study is to investigate the parameters affecting the positive or negative intentions in the use of information systems by tax office employees, as well as their contribution to the transactions between the public and private sectors and their effects. This article focuses on three important factors: (1) those that affect the acceptance of e-government systems by employees, (2) those that affect employees' intention to accept the e-government services, and (3) the contribution of information systems to electronic transactions their effects. In particular, research is done to identify the parameters that affect the intentions for using TAXIS platform by tax office employees of four branches in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

High success is the main objective of any education system. Thus, in any educational organization, the education offered must be efficient and effective. It is evident that some factors are critical for such achievements. Ubiquitous learning systems and interactive video courses incorporate features which can be measured using learning analytics. In this paper, we adopt nine dimensions of u-learning. According to the learners’ interactions, we suggest indexes and metrics for the assessment of ubiquitous and interactive video courses. These indexes and metrics are associated with the presented u-learning dimensions. The proposed metrics are calculated for a case study in a higher education institute, and the results are explained and associated with the introduced u-learning dimensions.

This paper proposes a cloud application architecture called OLEA, for monitoring the olive oil production chain. OLEA system deployment follows a divide-and-conquer management logic, which maintains olive tree clusters. On each cluster, NFC technology is used for monitoring plant protection practices and fertilization. Apart from on-site monitoring services, the system is also equipped with virgin oil management services. It uses an OLEA system controller that interconnects with sensors on oil mills, for the procurement of quantitative and qualitative olive oil characteristics, during the industrial extraction process. OLEA system services and management algorithms are controlled by a cloud application server, where collected data uploads and notifications are sent to the end users using a mobile phone application. This paper presents the OLEA system technical characteristics as well as the structure of OLEA communication protocols. Furthermore, a case study of the OLEA system data mining capabilities is presented examining the application of such efforts to the improvement of systematic cultivation, branding, and product exports.

Real-time transferring of the haptic sense over the Internet is quite a challenging task. This paper outlines the proposed protocols for transferring haptic streams over the Internet. Moreover, it describes the Quality of Service requirements that a network has to fulfill in order to successfully use haptic interfaces with high update rates over the Internet. Extensive simulations and experiments for the performance evaluation of transport protocols for real-time transferring haptic data are carried out. Complements between simulation and real world experiments are discussed. The metrics that are measured for the performance evaluation are delay, jitter, throughput, efficiency, packet loss and one proposed by the authors, packet arrival deviation. The simulation tests reveal which protocols could be used for the transfer of real-time haptic data over the Internet.
