If a metalens integrates the circular polarization (CP) conversion function, the focusing lens together with circular-polarizing lens (CPL) in traditional cameras may be replaced by a metalens. However, in terahertz (THz) band, the reported metalenses still do not obtain the perfect and strict single-handed CP, because they were constructed via Pancharatnam-Berry phase so that CP conversion contained both left-handed CP (LCP) and right-handed CP (RCP) components. In this paper, a silicon based THz metalens is constructed using dynamic phase to obtain single-handed CP conversion. Also, we can rotate the whole metalens at a certain angle to control the conversion of multi-polarization states, which can simply manipulate the focusing for incident linear polarization (LP) THz wave in three polarization conversion states, including LP without conversion, LCP and RCP. Moreover, the polarization conversion behavior is reversible, that is, the THz metalens can convert not only the LP into arbitrary single-handed CP, but also the LCP and RCP into two perpendicular LP, respectively. The metalens is expected to be used in advanced THz camera, as a great candidate for traditional CPL and focusing lens group, and also shows potential application in polarization imaging with discriminating LCP and RCP.

Dielectric chiral metasurface is a new type of planar and efficient chiral optical device that shows strong circular dichroism or optical activity, which has important application potential in optical sensing and display. However, the two types of chiral optical responses in conventional chiral metasurfaces are often interdependent, as their modulation of the amplitudes and phases of orthogonal circularly polarized components is correlated, which limits the further progress of chiral meta-devices. Here we propose a new scheme for independently designing the circular dichroism and optical activity of chiral metasurfaces to further control the polarization and wavefront of transmitted waves. Inspired by mixtures of chiral molecular isomers, we use the dielectric isomer resonators to form “super-units” instead of single meta-atoms for chiral responses in terahertz band, which is called racemic metasurface. By introducing two levels of Pancharatnam-Berry phases between meta-atoms and “super-units”, the polarization rotation angle and wavefront of the beam can be designed without the far-field circular dichroism. We demonstrate the strong control ability on terahertz waves of this scheme through simulation and experiments. In addition, this new type of device with near-field chirality but no far-field circular dichroism may also have important value in optical sensing and other technologies.

We propose a temperature sensor design based on surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) supported by filling the holes of a six-hole photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a silver nanowire. A liquid mixture (ethanol and chloroform) with a large thermo-optic coefficient is filled into the PCF holes as sensing medium. The filled silver nanowires can support resonance peaks and the peak will shift when temperature variations induce changes in the refractive indices of the mixture. By measuring the peak shift, the temperature change can be detected. The resonance peak is extremely sensitive to temperature because the refractive index of the filled mixture is close to that of the PCF material. Our numerical results indicate that a temperature sensitivity as high as 4 nm/K can be achieved and that the most sensitive range of the sensor can be tuned by changing the volume ratios of ethanol and chloroform. Moreover, the maximal sensitivity is relatively stable with random filled nanowires, which will be very convenient for the sensor fabrication.

Metasurfaces that can realize the polarization manipulation of electromagnetic waves on the sub-wavelength scale have become an emerging research field. Here, a novel strategy of combining the metasurface and Fresnel zone plate to form a metasurface zone plate is proposed to realize the conversion from nearly arbitrary polarizations to a fixed polarization. Specifically, when one polarized wave is incident on adjacent ring zones constructed by different types of meta-atoms, the transmitted waves generated by odd-numbered and even-numbered ring zones converge at the same focus and superimpose to generate a fixed polarized wave. As function demonstrations, we have designed two types of metasurface zone plates: one is a focused linear polarizer, and the other can convert nearly arbitrary polarized waves into focused circularly polarized waves. The simulated and measured results are consistent with theoretical expectations, suggesting that the proposed concept is flexible and feasible. Our work provides an alternative platform for polarization manipulation and may vigorously promote the development of polarization photonic devices.
