Understanding residents' daily activity chains provides critical support for various applications in transportation, public health and many other related fields. Recently, mobile phone location datasets have been suggested for mining activity patterns because of their utility and large sample sizes. Although recently machine learning-based models seem to perform well in activity purpose inference using mobile phone location data, most of these models work as black boxes. To address these challenges, this study proposes a flexible white box method to mine human activity chains from large-scale mobile phone location data by integrating both the spatial and temporal features of daily activities with varying weights. We find that the frequency distribution of major activity chain patterns agrees well with the patterns derived based on a travel survey of Shenzhen and a state-of-the-art method. Moreover, a dataset covering over 16.5% of the city population can yield a reasonable outcome of the major activity patterns. The contributions of this study not only lie in offering an effective approach to mining daily activity chains from mobile phone location data but also involve investigating the impact of different data conditions on the model performance, which make using big trajectory data more practical for domain experts.

The urban bus service system is one of the most important components of a public transport system. Thus, exploring the spatial configuration of the urban bus service system promotes an understanding of the quality of bus services. Such an understanding is of great importance to urban transport planning and policy making. In this study, we investigated the spatial characteristics of an urban bus service system by using the complex network approach. First, a three-step workflow was developed to collect a bus operating dataset from a public website. Then, we utilized the P-space method to represent the bus service network by connecting all bus stop pairs along each bus line. With the constructed bus network, a set of network analysis indicators were calculated to quantify the role of nodes in the network. A case study of Shenzhen, China was implemented to understand the statistical properties and spatial characteristics of the urban bus network configuration. The empirical findings can provide insights into the statistical laws and distinct convenient areas in a bus service network, and consequently aid in optimizing the allocation of bus stops and routes.

Industrial agglomeration, as a typical aspect of industrial structures, significantly influences policy development, economic growth, and regional employment. Due to the collection limitations of gross domestic product (GDP) data, the traditional assessment of industrial agglomeration usually focused on a specific field or region. To better measure industrial agglomeration, we need a new proxy to estimate GDP data for different industries. Currently, nighttime light (NTL) remote sensing data are widely used to estimate GDP at diverse scales. However, since the light intensity from each industry is mixed, NTL data are being adopted less to estimate different industries’ GDP. To address this, we selected an optimized model from the Gaussian process regression model and random forest model to combine Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership—Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP-VIIRS) NTL data and points-of-interest (POI) data, and successfully estimated the GDP of eight major industries in China for 2018 with an accuracy (R2) higher than 0.80. By employing the location quotient to measure industrial agglomeration, we found that a dominated industry had an obvious spatial heterogeneity. The central and eastern regions showed a developmental focus on industry and retail as local strengths. Conversely, many western cities emphasized construction and transportation. First-tier cities prioritized high-value industries like finance and estate, while cities rich in tourism resources aimed to enhance their lodging and catering industries. Generally, our proposed method can effectively measure the detailed industry agglomeration and can enhance future urban economic planning.

Atmospheric pollution is a critical issue in public health systems. The simulation of atmospheric pollution dispersion in urban blocks, using CFD, faces several challenges, including the complexity and inefficiency of existing CFD software, time-consuming construction of CFD urban block geometry, and limited visualization and analysis capabilities of simulation outputs. To address these challenges, we have developed a prototype system that couples 3DGIS and CFD for simulating, visualizing, and analyzing atmospheric pollution dispersion. Specifically, a parallel algorithm for coordinate transformation was designed, and the relevant commands were encapsulated to automate the construction of geometry and meshing required for CFD simulations of urban blocks. Additionally, the Fluent-based command flow was parameterized and encapsulated, enabling the automatic generation of model calculation command flow files to simulate atmospheric pollution dispersion. Moreover, multi-angle spatial partitioning and spatiotemporal multidimensional visualization analysis were introduced to achieve an intuitive expression and analysis of CFD simulation results. The result shows that the constructed geometry is correct, and the mesh quality meets requirements with all values above 0.45. CPU and GPU parallel algorithms are 13.3× and 25× faster than serial. Furthermore, our case study demonstrates the developed system’s effectiveness in simulating, visualizing, and analyzing atmospheric pollution dispersion in urban blocks.

Taxi travel flow patterns and their interday stability play an important role in the planning of urban transportation and public service facilities. Existing studies pay little attention to the stability of the travel flow patterns between days, and it is difficult to consider the impact of dynamic changes in daily travel demand analysis when supporting related decision making. Taxi trajectory data have been widely used in urban taxi travel-pattern analysis. This paper uses the taxi datasets of Shenzhen and New York to analyze and compare the interday stability of the taxi travel spatial structure and the flow volume based on the improved Levenshtein algorithm and geographic flow theory. The results show that (1) interday differences in taxi travel flow are obvious in both spatial structure and flow volume, high-frequency origin–destination (OD) trips are relatively stable; (2) the ODs between the central urban area and surrounding areas exhibit high traffic volume and high interday stability, and the ODs starting or ending at an airport exhibit high traffic stability; (3) one week’s data can describe 86% of the overall travel structure and 84% of travel flow in Shenzhen, and one week’s New York data can describe 73% of travel structure and 76% of travel flow. There are differences in the travel patterns of people in different cities, and the representativeness of datasets in different cities will be different. These findings can help to better understand the outcomes of taxi travel patterns derived from a relatively short period of data to avoid potential misuse in related decision making.

Predicting urban crowd flow spatial distributions plays a critical role in optimizing urban public safety and traffic congestion management. The spatial dependency between regions and the temporal dynamics of the local crowd flow are two important features in urban crowd flow prediction. However, few studies considered geographic characteristic in terms of spatial features. To fill this gap, we propose an urban crowd flow prediction model integrating geographic characteristics (FPM-geo). First, three geographic characteristics, proximity, functional similarity, and road network connectivity, are fused by a residual multigraph convolution network to model the spatial dependency relationship. Then, a long short-term memory network is applied as a framework to integrate both the temporal dynamic patterns of local crowd flow and the spatial dependency between regions. A 4-day mobile phone dataset validates the effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing it with several widely used approaches. The result shows that the root mean square error decreases by 15.37% compared with those of the typical models with the prediction interval at the 15-min level. The prediction error increases with the crowd flow size in a local area. Moreover, the error reaches the top of the morning peak and the evening peak and slopes down to the bottom at night.
