The liquid antenna, as a new member of the antenna family, has drawn significant and increasing attention from both academia and industry due to its unique features. In this paper, a comprehensive review on this technology is presented which covers both metallic and non-metallic liquid antennas. Non-metallic liquid antennas are further divided into water-based and non-water-based liquid antennas. We first review and compare different liquid antennas and highlight the major developments in the past. Detailed discussions on state-of-the-art designs and current technical challenges are then presented, and finally the ways forward for the future are suggested. As a special feature, an in-depth review and discussion on materials for liquid antennas are provided which was not well covered in the literature in the past, important properties of selected materials are given in three comparison tables which can serve as antenna material selection references. It is shown that Galinstan is probably the best choice for metallic liquid antennas while ionic liquid materials are the preferred choice for dielectric liquid antennas. The challenges of making the liquid antenna for real-world applications are identified and discussed. It is believed that a liquid antenna implemented in radio systems is probably just around the corner.

A comprehensive review of metamaterials and metasurfaces for wireless power transfer (WPT) and wireless energy harvesting (WEH) is presented in this article. According to the features of the electromagnetic field from the source to the receiver, WPT is divided into nonradiative near-field technology and radiative (near and far-field) technologies. Many different and important designs are reviewed and compared. It is shown that metamaterials and metasurfaces can significantly improve the power transfer efficiency and operational distance for WPT systems. They can also improve the energy conversion efficiency of wireless energy harvesters by making the reception less sensitive to incident wave angle and polarization. A rectenna is a critical element for both WPT and WEH. It is shown that metamaterial-based rectennas can achieve a higher RF to dc conversion efficiency. Furthermore, metamaterials can also be used as either parasitic elements or loading components to improve WEH performance in terms of circuit size, beamwidth, and conversion efficiency. Future development directions and opportunities of metamaterials and metasurfaces for WPT and WEH are also proposed in this article.

A dual-band and polarization-angle-independent rectifying metasurface (MS) with a miniaturized dimension and a wide incident angle range are presented in this article. The proposed structure consists of a single layer of periodic cell arrays with integrated diodes, a dc feed, and a load. A novel method of incorporating surface-mount components (e.g., diodes) into the texture is developed to simplify the structure. The matching network between MS and the nonlinear rectifier can be eliminated directly due to the multimode resonance and adjustable high-impedance characteristics of the MS. Moreover, the proposed MS can maintain high conversion efficiency by using different diodes without changing the overall topology. In addition, the proposed design can effectively capture incoming waves with arbitrary polarizations and a wide incident angle range of 60°. The 4 × 4 MS array is fabricated and measured. Experimental results show that the proposed structure can achieve maximum efficiency of 58% at 2.4 GHz and 50% at 5.8 GHz with an input power of 0 dBm under different polarizations and incident angles. Importantly, it is also shown that the rectifying MS can maintain high efficiency over a wide power range from -3 to 10 dBm. The proposed design concept is very suitable for the adaptive wireless power supply of portable devices.

Condition monitoring for overhead power lines is critical for power transmission networks to improve their reliability, detect potential problems in the early stage, and ensure the utilization of the transmitting full capacity. Energy harvesting can be an effective solution for autonomous self-powered wireless sensors. In this paper, a novel bow-tie-shaped coil is proposed, which is placed directly under overhead power lines to scavenge the magnetic field energy. Compared to the conventional method by mounting the energy harvester on the power lines, this approach provides more flexibility and space to power bigger sensors such as the weather station. As the harvesting coil cannot entirely enclose the power lines, the demagnetization factor that is closely related to the core geometry should be considered and optimized. Thus a new bow-tie-shape core is designed to produce a much lower demagnetization factor (hence more power) than that of the conventional solenoid. The selection of core material is studied and found that Mn-Zn ferrite is the most suitable core material because it greatly reduces the eddy current losses and also has high permeability. Experiment results show that the bow-tie coil could have a power density of 1.86 μW/cm 3 when placed in a magnetic flux density of 7 μT rms . This value is 15 times greater than the reported results under the same condition. If a longer bow-tie coil with more turns is placed in a magnetic flux density of 11μT rms , the produced power density is 103.5 μW/cm 3 , which is comparable to a solar panel working during a cloudy day. Thus, the proposed solution is a very efficient and attractive method for harvesting the magnetic field energy for a range of monitoring applications.

The increasing complexity of vehicles has led to a growing demand for in-vehicle services that rely on multiple sensors. In the Vehicular Edge Computing (VEC) paradigm, energy-efficient task scheduling is critical to achieving optimal completion time and energy consumption. Although extensive research has been conducted in this field, challenges remain in meeting the requirements of time-sensitive services and adapting to dynamic traffic environments. In this context, a novel algorithm called Multi-action and Environment-adaptive Proximal Policy Optimization algorithm (MEPPO) is designed based on the conventional PPO algorithm and then a joint task scheduling and resource allocation method is proposed based on the designed MEPPO algorithm. In specific, the method involves three core aspects. Firstly, task scheduling strategy is designed to generate task offloading decisions and priority assignment decisions for the tasks utilizing PPO algorithm, which can further reduce the completion time of service requests. Secondly, transmit power allocation scheme is designed considering the expected transmission distance among vehicles and edge servers, which can minimize transmission energy consumption by adjusting the allocated transmit power dynamically. Thirdly, the proposed MEPPO-based scheduling method can make scheduling decisions for vehicles with different numbers of tasks by manipulating the state space of the PPO algorithm, which makes the proposed method be adaptive to real-world dynamic VEC environment. At last, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through extensive simulation and on-site experiments.
