Historically, there are several large roundabouts in Vilnius with traffic organisation and safety problems. Vilnius City Administration initiated changes on these large roundabouts in 2016, by introducing new traffic organisation schemes and using relatively simple measures such as the line markings, safety measures and road signs. The aim of the research is to analyse the number of traffic accidents on the roundabouts before and after such traffic reorganisation. The article is based on accident maps in roundabouts created by the authors. Based on the comparison of accident maps, the safety trends were analysed and summarised.

The approach defines the process of conducting an empirical research of the travel behavior patterns of residents of Vilnius city. It defines survey methodology and important mobility parameters such as activity sequences and their probabilities of homogeneous urban population segments during the weekday. This empirical research is based on a travel diary survey that was planned and executed in cooperation with Vilnius Municipality during preparation of sustainable mobility plan. The following work describes the research object, the questionnaire design, sampling strategy and the analysis of results based on characteristics of respondents. An innovative activity sequence-focused travel behavior research approach designed to collect data for a tour-based travel demand model.

Globally, fire causes considerable losses that can be alleviated by taking appropriate actions facilitated by systems supported by geo-information technologies. This research focuses upon the development of an approach for planning urban infrastructures, and particularly in the accessibility of fire hydrants. Accessibility of fire hydrants’ infrastructure in urban territories is one of the key elements in fire risk management and public safety. The main result of the research is a comprehensive and structured Geographic Information Systems (GISs)-based dataset for the fast and more efficient planning of fire hydrants in urban territories. The proposed framework for data collection and processing was used to determine the distribution of hydrants, location of fire brigade stations and areas and to demonstrate the capabilities of the existing municipal fire extinguishing systems in Vilnius City, Lithuania. Later on, research on fire hydrants’ accessibility, analysis of the location of protected and unprotected urban territories and marking of unprotected buildings, was carried out. The resulting map of unprotected urban territories can be of great benefit for understanding fire risks and offering more effective ways for fire risk management.

The largest cities in Europe are improving the public transport systems and primarily focuses on efficiency, safety attractiveness and number of other indicators, because such indicators have a direct impact on passenger satisfaction. The number of travels by public transport is increasing, and it will bring new challenges in the road safety. Existing public transport infrastructure in the biggest Lithuanian cities is no longer able to satisfy increasing passenger traffic volume, therefore traffic accidents involving public transport are also increasing. There is no detailed analysis of traffic accidents in Vilnius public transport subsystem, therefore all possibilities to improve safety in public transport are not exploited. The results of the study should help to identify the main causes of traffic safety accidents and prepare action plan to improve the situation in other Lithuanian cities.

The formulation of scenarios for developing the urban transport infrastructure requires decisions mainly based on the intuition of experts in transport and highly influenced by public interest groups, business entities and political opinions. However, the reached decisions sometimes fail to be the most efficient. Therefore, to avoid errors and ensure the development of a sustainable transport system, the economical appraisal of infrastructure development scenarios is necessary. The economic evaluation of the developed scenarios can be carried out through macro-simulation and cost-benefit analysis. This paper deals with the Kaunas City Master Plan providing solutions to transport infrastructure development. According to the Master Plan, solutions can be classified considering 3 cathegories (priorities), although the detailed sequence of implementation is not given. With the help of macro-simulation, this study arranged Master Plan solutions into scenarios, checked all 20 scenarious and established an implementation order based on the theory of cost benefit analysis. The identified order substantially differs from the priorities set in the Master Plan.
