The high porosity of medium-coarse sand (MCS) layers in groundwater recharge areas presents a high environmental risk. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) are two common sulfonamide antibiotics in surface water that have a high propensity to migrate into groundwater. In this study, four biochars were prepared and biochar-amended soil aquifer treatment (SAT) columns were constructed to remove SMX and TMP. Batch experiments demonstrated that the sorption isotherms conformed to the Freundlich model. The maximum adsorptions of biochars prepared at 700 °C were 54.73 and 67.62 mg/g for SMX and 59.3 and 73.38 mg/g for TMP. Electrostatic interaction may be one of the primary mechanisms of adsorption. The column experiments showed that the SMX and TMP removal rate of the biochar-amended SAT was as high as 96%, while that of the MCS SAT was less than 5%. The addition of biochar greatly improved the retention capacity of the pollutants in the MCS layer in the groundwater recharge area and effectively reduced environmental risk.
Industrial companies are responsible for most of the energy consumption and carbon emissions in China’s urban agglomerations. Some scholars have allocated CO2 emissions to China’s industrial sectors in reaching national reduction targets, yet industrial sectors’ burden-sharing problem for carbon mitigation at the provincial level has not been well addressed. Given the goal of realizing China’s national carbon mitigation target by 2030, we applied a nonlinear quota allocation model to obtain the optimal allocation of emission reduction quotas among 37 industrial sectors in the Jing-Jin-Ji urban agglomeration in China (comprising Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei). Compared to Beijing and Tianjin, the secondary industry in Hebei bears the highest reduction responsibilities, given that Hebei will experience the largest carbon emissions, at 0.42 billion tons in 2030, which is 80.04% of the total emissions in the Jing-Jin-Ji urban agglomeration. Energy production and heavy manufacturing sectors serve as the major carbon emitters and have relatively high carbon intensities, which indicates that they have significant potential and major responsibilities for impacting carbon mitigation. Based on differences in urban function and development mode, the same industrial sectors in the three provinces have different obligations for emission reductions. This study is vital to allocate reduction responsibilities among industrial sectors and to discrete key sector categories bearing a higher mitigation burden.
Hydrologic (water temperature) and hydrodynamic (water depth, flow velocity, and Froude number) factors affect fish spawning activities, and spawning grounds provide suitable hydrologic and hydrodynamic conditions for fish spawning to occur. However, locating fish spawning grounds is encumbered by uncertainty, particularly for pelagic spawners. This may be because such fish species have unique hydrologic and hydrodynamic requirements during their spawning periods, resulting in the wide-ranging approaches used to locate their spawning grounds. Accordingly, this study was designed to accurately locate fish spawning grounds through means of spatial suitability evaluation. For this experiment, the four major “Asian carp” target species were selected in the Dongta spawning reach, a tributary of the Pearl River. First, we investigated the historical information on the location of the spawning reaches. An acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) was used to measure topographic and hydrodynamic data of the spawning reaches during the spawning period. Then, based on the spatial clustering method, cluster analysis on spatial attributes (water depth, flow velocity, water temperature, and Froude number) was conducted on potential spawning grounds. The cluster analysis method uses k-means clustering; a method often employed to classify large amounts of data. Finally, we analyzed and evaluated the spatial suitability of spawning reaches by combining fish spawning suitability curves to obtain spatial preferences associated with fish spawning activities. Proportionally, results revealed a high suitability (>0.4) area (60.86%). Moreover, spawning suitability in curved river sections and deep pools in straight river sections were significantly higher than bifurcated sections. Furthermore, areas near the riverbanks were more suitable than mid-course sections of the river. Finally, the locations of six potential Asian carp spawning grounds were determined according to their spatial suitability. This study provides technical support to accurately locate spawning grounds for the fish that produce drifting eggs.
An economical and effective method is still lacking for cadmium (Cd) toxicity reduction and food product safety improvement in soil–vegetable systems. Therefore, this study aimed to reduce the Cd toxicity to pak choi (Brassica campestris L.) by jointly using passivators and organic fertilizer, highlighting food products’ safety based on pot experiments. The results showed that compared with the control, organic fertilizer decreased the Cd content in edible parts and the soil’s available Cd by 48.4% and 20.9% on average, respectively, due to the 0.15-unit increases in soil pH. Once jointly applied with passivators, the decrements increased by 52.3–72.6% and 32.5–52.6% for the Cd content in edible parts and for the soil’s available Cd, respectively, while the pH increment increased by 0.15–0.46 units. Compared with the control, the transport factor of Cd was reduced by 61.9% and 50.9–55.0% when applying organic fertilizer alone and together with the passivators, respectively. The combination treatment of biochar and organic fertilizer performed the best in decreasing the Cd content in the edible parts and the soil’s available Cd. The combination treatment of fish bone meal and organic fertilizer induced the greatest increases in soil pH. The grey relational analysis results showed that the combination treatment of biochar and organic fertilizer performed the best in reducing the potential Cd pollution risk, thereby highlighting the vegetable food safety. This study provides a potential economical and effective technology for toxicity reduction and food safety in Cd-polluted soil.
