The bioactivity and biocompatibility play key roles in the success of dental and orthopaedic implants. Although most commercial implant systems use various surface microstructures, the ideal multi-scale topographies capable of controlling osteointegration have not yielded conclusive results. Inspired by both the isotropic adhesion of the skin structures in tree frog toe pads and the anisotropic adhesion of the corrugated ridges on the scales of Morpho butterfly wings, composite micro/nano-structures, including the array of micro-hexagons and oriented nano-ripples on titanium alloy implants, were respectively fabricated by microsecond laser direct writing and femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures, to improve cell adherence, alignment and proliferation on implants. The main differences in both the bioactivity in simulated body fluid and the biocompatibility in osteoblastic cell MC3T3 proliferation were measured and analyzed among Ti-6Al-4V samples with smooth surface, micro-hexagons and composite micro/nano-structures, respectively. Of note, bioinspired micro/nano-structures displayed the best bioactivity and biocompatibility after in vitro experiments, and meanwhile, the nano-ripples were able to induce cellular alignment within the micro-hexagons. The reasons for these differences were found in the topographical cues. An innovative functionalization strategy of controlling the osteointegration on titanium alloy implants is proposed using the composite micro/nano-structures, which is meaningful in various regenerative medicine applications and implant fields.

The electrosurgical blade is the most common invasive surgical instrument in a cutting and hemostasis process; however, the blade easily leads to the adhesion of overheated soft tissues on the blades and induces a potential danger for the patients. To minimize the adhesive tissues, we proposed the one-step surface texturing method to fabricate anti-adhesive biomimetic scales on stainless steel 316L rapidly based on the self-organized surface microstructures induced by the long-pulse fiber laser, which was inspired by the excellent performances of anti-adhesion and anti-friction in the pangolin scales. The optimal formation parameters, chemical components, and crystal structures of the laser-induced self-organized surface microstructures were investigated in the experiments. Moreover, the underlying formation mechanism was revealed. The electrosurgical blades with biomimetic scales have hydrophobicity and a smaller frictional coefficient, which effectively reduced the adhesion of soft tissue.

In the field of femtosecond laser machining, it is essential to select the appropriate process parameters to obtain near thermal damage-free and high efficient machining of SiC wafer. In this work, a method of process parameter optimization for femtosecond laser machining of 4H–SiC was proposed by using the predictive ability of the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and the optimization algorithm of the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). Firstly, the femtosecond laser was used to fabricate microgrooves on SiC wafers, and the effects of process parameters (laser average power, scanning speed and repetition rate) on groove depth, width, heat affected zone and material removal rate were investigated. Secondly, the ANN model is established based on experimental data. Other experiments verify the accuracy of the model, and the average error in the model’s predictions is around 5%. Thirdly, Pareto optimal solutions are obtained by global optimization of the ANN model using the NSGA-II. The experimental results show that the Pareto optimal solutions are effective and reliable. This proposed method offers dependable guidance for the selecting and optimizing process parameters of high hardness and brittle materials in the field of femtosecond laser processing, and reduces the cost of selecting the appropriate processing parameters in the production process. The method can also be extended to other machining means, such as turning and milling.

Unidirectional droplet motion without energy input has attracted considerable attention in various potential applications. We report on the fabrication of unconventional laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) for unidirectional droplet micro-displacement by a femtosecond laser at a large incident angle. In order to overcome the mechanical durability of the existing soft materials such as PDMS for controlling the droplet, Zr-based bulk metallic glass (Zr-BMG) is used to fabricate the typical non-centrosymmetric unconventional LIPSS, which include micro-sized elliptical arc-shaped structures and nano-ripples with the central spatial periodicity of 400 nm. The spots and the grating of unconventional LIPSS on Zr-BMG are fabricated to construct the functional surface structures by femtosecond laser irradiation. The unidirectional micro-displacement of water droplet on Zr-BMG was achieved using functional surface structures. For better understanding the fabrication of unconventional LIPSS, the underlying formation mechanism was revealed by numerical simulations. This work gives a fast, precise and low-cost method to fabricate the non-centrosymmetric surface micro/nano-structures on metal materials for unidirectional droplet motion in microfluidics.

Wearable electronics have showed their profound impact in military, sports, medical and other fields, but their large-scale applications are still limited due to high manufacturing costs. As an advanced micro-fabrication process, laser processing technology has the advantages of high speed, high flexibility, strong controllability, environmental protection and non-contact in preparing micro-nano structures of wearable electronics. In this paper, a 355 nm ultraviolet laser was used to pattern the copper foil pasted on the flexible substrate, and the interconnection electrodes and wires were constructed. A processing method of multi-parallel line laser cutting and high-speed laser scanning is proposed to separate and assist in peeling off excess copper foil. The process parameters are optimized. A stretchable 3 × 3 light-emitting diode (LED) array was prepared and its performance was tested. The results showed that the LED array can work normally under the conditions of folding, bending and stretching, and the stretch rate can reach more than 50%. A stretchable temperature measurement circuit that can be attached to a curved surface was further fabricated, which proves the feasibility of this process in the fabrication of small-scale flexible wearable electronic devices. Requiring no wet etching or masking process, the proposed process is an efficient, simple and low-cost method for the fabrication of stretchable circuits.
