This paper analyses the characteristics of a knowledge management system supporting an Engineer-To-Order manufacturing strategy in the context of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). For this reason, after the identification of a set of knowledge management system requirements, three in-depth case studies of Italian small and medium-sized enterprises are discussed. The paper introduces an IT-based tool to support implementing a knowledge management system to enhance Engineer-To-Order manufacturing performance. The paper contributes to advancing the understanding of knowledge management systems’ relevance to improve SMEs’ performance, specifically in the operative context of the Engineer-To-Order business and provides practical implications for IT-based tools defining a platform for the development of knowledge management systems.

In the last two decades, Quality of Working Life (QWL) has become a core element of the European social model and the European Employment Strategy. “More and better jobs” is a strategic goal promoted within Europe for emphasising the attention in QWL. However, there is a large debate in the literature on the definition of QWL, its dimensions, and consequently on the methods to use for its measurement. To the best of our knowledge, the systematic reviews currently available in the literature on QWL measurement in European organisations investigate only a particular industry and/or working population. Moreover, they do not focus specifically on composite indicators, although they appear promising in facilitating QWL understanding and comparisons for supporting decision-makers and policy makers. To overcome these gaps, we conducted a systematic review to identify composite indicators for measuring QWL in European organisations. The review returned 19 studies that are analysed based on a set of factors related to QWL locutions, index name, geographical area, industry or population, level of analysis, dimensions, type of data, inputs, outputs, and test and/or validation. The results highlight a significant heterogeneity among the indicators, confirming the lack of an agreed upon QWL composite indicator for Europe. Such heterogeneity concerns also QWL dimensions. A critical comparison of the different composite indicators is provided, along with a unifying proposal of QWL macro-dimensions. Several gaps in the literature are pointed out suggesting directions for future research.

Wearable devices are pervasive solutions for increasing work efficiency, improving workers’ well-being, and creating interactions between users and the environment anytime and anywhere. Although several studies on their use in various fields have been performed, there are no systematic reviews on their utilisation in ergonomics. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review to identify wearable devices proposed in the scientific literature for ergonomic purposes and analyse how they can support the improvement of ergonomic conditions. Twenty-eight papers were retrieved and analysed thanks to eleven comparison dimensions related to ergonomic factors, purposes, and criteria, populations, application and validation. The majority of the available devices are sensor systems composed of different types and numbers of sensors located in diverse body parts. These solutions also represent the technology most frequently employed for monitoring and reducing the risk of awkward postures. In addition, smartwatches, body-mounted smartphones, insole pressure systems, and vibrotactile feedback interfaces have been developed for evaluating and/or controlling physical loads or postures. The main results and the defined framework of analysis provide an overview of the state of the art of smart wearables in ergonomics, support the selection of the most suitable ones in industrial and non-industrial settings, and suggest future research directions.

Endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery is a surgical technique introduced in the last 20 years for the treatment of skull base pathologies and, in particular, pituitary tumours. Although the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders is usually significantly higher in endoscopists and minimally invasive surgeons compared to other surgical and medical specialties, reviews on the prevalence of disorders among neurosurgeons dedicated to endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery are not available. This article performs a systematic review to identify the work-related musculoskeletal disorders among transsphenoidal neurosurgeons, their prevalence and the ergonomic interventions proposed to reduce risk factors and prevent disorders. The results show that the ergonomics of transsphenoidal neurosurgeons is an under-investigated topic. Indeed, specific prevalence data are not available. In addition, only a few papers suggest interventions and guidelines, but without objective assessment of the outcomes to confirm the ergonomic benefit. Based on these gaps in the literature, a future research agenda is proposed.

Environmental impact and use of energy and materials are relevant topics in companies. To achieve energy savings and enhance environmental performance, managers can invest in technologies (technical measures) and/or implement management practices (low-cost and non-technical measures). This paper focuses on energy and environmental management practices in foundry, which is a particularly energy-intensive industry producing significant carbon dioxide emissions. We conducted a scoping review of scientific publications and technical documents to identify practices that enable energy efficiency improvement and adverse environmental impact reduction in cast iron foundries using coreless induction furnaces. The review returned 399 practices, which we categorised according to the process step of application and theme. We developed a hierarchy to classify the practices according to their sustainability. The results show that the practices proposed in the literature focus mainly on avoiding or reducing resource consumption, rather than on recovering residual value. The intended contribution is to promote the adoption of management practices as an effective lever to increase energy efficiency and reduce environmental impacts, while also providing a summary of current knowledge to facilitate the identification of areas for further research. The review could also support foundry managers in the selection and prioritisation of the practices to adopt.

Purpose. In the steel industry, performing activities in confined spaces where potential oxygen (O2) displacement can occur may expose workers to fatal consequences. To the best of our knowledge, no quantitative exposure assessment of O2 deficiency in steel confined spaces is available in the literature. To overcome this gap, we perform Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (ODH) assessments in real confined spaces using two existing models to identify the most critical parameters responsible for ODH, and suggest controls for mitigating the asphyxiation risk. Methods. We applied a well-mixed model and a Near Field-Far Field approach to estimate the indoor O2 level in time during and following releases of simple asphyxiants. Models' inputs were mainly gathered thanks to audits and instrumental tests in three firms. Results. The most severe ODH exposures are posed in spaces with a restricted volume and where accidental releases of inert gases can occur. Such exposures can be controlled through early release detections and augmented reality systems. Conclusions. ODH assessments in confined spaces of steel firms allow the identification of the most critical parameters from an O2 depletion perspective, focusing on which data need careful measurement, and help to establish controls compatible with the operations conducted into these areas.

The objectives of this study are to develop an efficient and generally applicable multi-criteria methodology for choosing the optimal ultrasound device, and to apply it to a case study. The methodology is based on Analytic Hierarchy Process with a Goal (to satisfy company’s objectives in terms of ergonomics, i.e. to optimise workers’ well-being) and three levels of evaluation elements. It provides decision-makers of hospitals or diagnostic centres with a structured methodology to select the most ergonomic ultrasound. The case study considered a wireless, a mobile and a traditional ultrasound device in an Italian hospital. The wireless device was the preferred one.

In order to face the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities brought by the “Digitalised Era”, the support of good quality information system is of paramount importance for companies. The objective of this paper is to investigate to what extent the current offer of business software is able to meet the set of requirements that manufacturing companies have to satisfy to cope with the digital transformation. First, a literature review is carried out identify Industry 4.0 business requirements. Then, the product portfolio of a business software market leader, SAP SE, is analysed as representative of the software offer available on the market. The SAP solutions that can match each business requirement are identified. The results show that almost all the business requirements are covered by current software offer, except for few cases for which the solution is still under development (i.e. Human-machine interaction, Machine learning).

This research was conducted to analyze the hand-arm vibration exposure levels in the workplace and the effects of vibrations on the health of stone crushing workers. The results suggested that the levels of vibration for rock drilling operators, measured through two different types of systems, were exceeding the Threshold Limit Values. Therefore, a higher percentage of workers may be affected with hand-arm vibration syndrome. In addition, the Hand Activity Level score was calculated with the support of a physician in order to analyze the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders. Prolonged exposures to hand-arm vibration may also lead to loss of grip strength and proper functioning of hand. A digital hand dynamometer was used to calculate the grip strength of the workers using powered drill machine. A significant decrease of 5.86 kg of force in average grip strength of the workers was found before and after 1 h of drilling.

In an earlier study, the authors proposed a conceptual framework for the design and use of a visual recording system for safety reasons in the workplace. Based on that framework, a video surveillance system has been put in place and experimented in an Italian heat treatment company. This paper provides a description of the experimentation and an analysis of its main outcomes. The aim is to gain some insights into the benefits as well as the drawbacks connected to the use of video technology as a means to improve safety management in manufacturing companies. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of video technology at supporting the identification of the risks connected to unsafe behaviours of the work-force and critical conditions of the working environment. Video surveillance provides several benefits as opposed to in person observations, such as: non-biased and accurate accident data; in-depth analysis; observations possible not in real-time; observer not exposed to risks; undisturbed work activity; possibility of longer observation periods. The recorded videos can facilitate the identification of safe practices and the best risk management approaches as well as be used to improve training sessions. Further investigation is required to assess the effectiveness of the system in the long term

Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (ODH) may expose workers to asphyxiation risk. ODH assessment is often carried out only for highly risky working environments and through monitoring. We conducted a systematic review of the literature to identify predictive models that estimate indoor oxygen level and assess ODH in any working environment. The implementation of these models may be of help to the employer for the adoption of preventive and/or protective measures in order to improve workers' health and safety. We focused on models dealing with ODH assessment caused by inert gas releases. Inert gases are usually used in confined spaces and laboratories, and may cause asphyxiation without any preliminary physiological sign. The systematic review returned sixteen models for estimating oxygen concentration, oxygen partial pressure and/or ODH Classes. We critically analysed and compared predictive models through a framework of qualification indicators regarding indoor and outdoor parameters, ventilation aspects, causes and releases, and outputs. The analysis pointed out the weaknesses of the existing models that need to be addressed by future research, in particular related to the estimation of indoor oxygen level in time and in space, and the consideration of accidental releases and of HVAC systems reliability. The framework is also intended to support the selection of the most suitable model for the ODH assessment in a specific working environment

The objective of this paper is to assess the techno-economic viability of the use of fuel cell as an alternative technology for landfill gas energy recovery. The case of an Italian municipal solid waste landfill is analyzed. The landfill was opened in 1998 and in 2001 the energy recovery facility started operation. The current landfill gas conversion system is based on internal combustion engine technology. However, the drawbacks of internal combustion engine in terms of conversion efficiency and air emissions are widely acknowledged. Some authors have proposed molten carbonate fuel cell as one of the most interesting solution for landfill gas energy recovery for the near future. Fuel cells have proven capable of providing superior energy efficiency and environmental performance, but their widespread use is constrained by the capital cost required. Using actual data from the landfill, a comparison between the current energy recovery system and a hypothetical alternative solution based on molten carbonate fuel cell is performed. The analysis assesses the cost-effectiveness of the two solutions, considering also some environmental externalities usually not included in traditional economic assessment. The main strengths and weaknesses of the two landfill gas energy recovery systems are highlighted and some new insights into molten carbonate fuel cell overall sustainability are provided.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework that small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) can use to assess their performance measurement system (PMS) in order to identify the main weaknesses and take corrective measures. Design/methodology/approach – Starting from a review of the recommendations provided in literature regarding performance measurement in companies, a list of general characteristics of a “good” PMS is defined. The identified PMS general features are then tailored to SME needs through an analysis of the characteristics of SMEs and a survey of their performance measurement current practice. Finally all the requirements are included in a framework designed to support SMEs in critically reviewing their PMS and enabling its effective use. Findings – The main characteristics of SMEs are reviewed and classified; the general characteristics of a “good” PMS are collected from the literature and then adapted to the SME context, thus obtaining a list of PMS requirements for SMEs; moreover a tool for PMS self-assessment is developed. Research limitations/implications – Research is still at an early stage and applications of the tool in real settings will offer the possibility to refine and validate it. Practical implications – The tool proposed codifies best practices and makes them accessible by SMEs in a simple way, thus supporting companies in the process of continuous improvement of their PMS. Originality/value – The field of performance measurement in SMEs is an emergent area of study. The paper highlights the necessity of PMS assessment instruments suitable for SMEs and defines a new tool starting from the analysis of SME needs and characteristics.
