Evaluation of slope stability under water level fluctuations is an important topic in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in China. However, most of the previous studies regarded slope soil as isotropic material, or only considered the influence of anisotropy ratio (kr = kx/ky) but ignored the anisotropy direction (α). Meanwhile, the pore pressure–stress coupling was rarely considered in the previous numerical simulations. In the present study, the SIGMA/W and SLOPE/W modules in Geo-studio are utilized to carry out the numerical simulation of Caipo slope under the drawdown of the reservoir water level, and the anisotropy ratio (kr) as well as the anisotropy direction (α) of two kinds of soils (clay and sand) are included. Results show that the anisotropy ratio kr and anisotropy direction α decrease the infiltration capacity of the soil, which increases the infiltration line hysteretic elevation (ILHE) as well as maximum horizontal displacement (MHD), and reduces the minimum safety factor (MSF). The slope toe firstly fails with the drawdown of water level. The influence of reservoir water level drop on seepage, deformation, and stability of the sand slope is less than that of the clay slope. For the sandy soil slope, it is not only necessary to consider the influence of kr, but also the influence of α. For the soil slope, we can only consider α in order to simplify calculation.

Fissures and holes widely exist in rock mechanics engineering, and, at present, their failure mechanisms under complex compress and shear stress states have not been well recognized. In our work, a fracture mark, ξ, is introduced, and the kernel function of the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is then re-written, thus realizing the fracture modelling of the rock media. Then, the numerical models containing the fissures and holes are established, and their progressive failure processes under the compress and shear stress states are simulated, with the results showing that: (1) the improved SPH method can reflect the dynamic crack propagation processes of the rock masses, and the numerical results are in good agreement with the previous experimental results. Meanwhile, the improved SPH method can get rid of the traditional mesh re-division problems, which can be well-applied to rock failure modeling; (2) the hole shapes, fissure angles, fissure lengths, fissure numbers, and confining pressure all have great impacts on the final failure modes and peak strengths of the model; and (3) in practical engineering, the rock masses are in the 3D stress state, therefore, developing a high performance 3D SPH program and applying it to engineering in practice will be of great significance.

Material scientists face a critical challenge in characterizing the mesoscopic damage evolution of concrete under tensile loading, as traditional experimental and theoretical approaches struggle to resolve the complexities of its multiphase heterogeneous structure. This study addresses this gap by employing the Discrete Element Method (DEM) with PFC2D to model concrete’s mesoscopic cracking, integrating aggregates, mortar, interfacial transition zones (ITZ), and pores. Through parameter calibration against experimental data, uniaxial tensile simulations reveal how aggregate percentages (30–45%) and pore percentages (1–6%) influence crack propagation and tensile strength. Specifically, when the aggregate percentage increased from 30% to 40%, the peak tensile strength decreased by 26%, while increasing from 40% to 45% led to a recovery in strength. With porosity increasing from 2% to 4%, the peak strength dropped by approximately 3%, and further to 6% caused a 14% reduction, demonstrating the quantitative impact of microstructural parameters on concrete performance. Simulation results align closely with experimental data, validating DEM’s efficacy in modeling mesoscopic cracking. This work provides a mesoscopic theoretical foundation for optimizing concrete’s tensile properties and underscores the need to incorporate realistic mesoscopic features in future simulations.

Complex bedding properties and in situ stress conditions of shale formation lead to complex hydraulic fracturing morphologies. However, due to the limitations of traditional numerical methods, the simulation of hydraulic fracturing in shale formation still needs further development. Based on this, the liquid–solid interaction modes and the SPH governing equations considering liquid–solid interaction force have been introduced. The smoothing kernel function in the traditional SPH method is improved by introducing the fracture mark ξ, which can realize the simulation of rock hydraulic fracturing processes. The stress boundary of the SPH method is applied by stress mapping of “stress particles”, and the feasibility and correctness of the method are verified by two numerical examples. Then, the simulation of hydraulic fracturing processes of bedding shale formations are carried out. With the increase of horizontal stress ratio, the total number of damaged particles decreases, but the initiation and extension pressure increase gradually. The initiation stress of small bedding dip angles (θ < 45°) is larger than that of big bedding dip angles (θ > 45°). The hydraulic fracture propagation range at low horizontal stress ratio is wider and the fracture is along the direction of maximum principal stress, while the hydraulic fracture propagation range at high horizontal stress ratio is limited to the perforation. The hydraulic fracture will propagate through the bedding with small dip angles. However, when the bedding dip angle is larger, the hydraulic fracture will propagate along the bedding direction.

In order to study the ductile deformation characteristics and failure process of plain concrete under uniaxial compression, this paper proposes a new constitutive model. The new model was used to fit and analyze the constitutive curve of concrete under uniaxial compressive under various degradation forms and was compared with the traditional constitutive models. Finally, the new model was used to quantitatively analyze and predict the stress–strain curve of concrete in different degradation periods of a set of freeze–thaw measured data. The results show that, compared with the traditional constitutive model, the new model is simple in form and has few parameters, and the numerical value of the parameter can reflect the ductile deformation capacity of concrete. The fitting curve of the new model has the highest fitting degree with the measured stress–strain curve of concrete, and the goodness of fit (R2) is also the largest. The new model is suitable for fitting the stress–strain curve of concrete under uniaxial compression under various deteriorating forms, and the degree of fit between the constitutive prediction curve and the measured curve is high. It can be seen from the fitting results of the new model parameters that the ductile deformation capacity of concrete decreases first and then increases slightly, which is inconsistent with the law of gradual deterioration of strength. There is a minimum moment of ductility deformation capacity of concrete (MDC). The MDC of O-C40 concrete is about 114 freeze–thaw cycles, and the MDC of O-C50 concrete is about 116 freeze–thaw cycles; the degree of fit between the constitutive prediction curve and the measured curve is high. We hope that the improvement mentioned offers valid reference to the study of ductile deformation characteristics and failure process of compressed concrete under different deterioration forms.
