The present study was performed to assess the relationship between hand-held myotonometer MyotonPRO and shear wave elastography (SWE) measurements of lower limb muscle stiffness during resting and active voluntary contraction. Forty healthy young adults, (20 males and 20 females) participated in the study. The stiffness of each subject’s rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA), and medial gastrocnemius (MG) was measured repeatedly by MyotonPRO and SWE. Moderate to strong correlations between the two methods’ measurements were found for both resting and active voluntary contraction. (r = 0.416–0.669, p < 0.05; r = 0.398–0.594, p < 0.05, respectively). Muscle stiffness at rest was significantly lower compared contraction in all four muscles measured by both methods (p < 0.05). Intra-rater reliabilities were generally lower when measurements were taken during contraction. Additionally, when compared by gender, muscle stiffness measured by MyotonPRO was significantly higher at rest in men compared to women, except for the TA. However, a significant difference was found in TA muscle stiffness by gender when measured with SWE. When muscles were contracted, all muscles showed significantly higher stiffness in men compared to women. There were moderate to good correlations in muscle stiffness between measurements of SWE and MyotonPRO at rest and during active voluntary contraction. Additionally, both instruments showed good intra-rater reliability.

The non-local means (NLM) noise reduction algorithm is well known as an excellent technique for removing noise from a magnetic resonance (MR) image to improve the diagnostic accuracy. In this study, we undertook a systematic review to determine the effectiveness of the NLM noise reduction algorithm in MR imaging. A systematic literature search was conducted of three databases of publications dating from January 2000 to March 2020; of the 82 publications reviewed, 25 were included in this study. The subjects were categorized into four major frameworks and analyzed for each research result. Research in NLM noise reduction for MR images has been increasing worldwide; however, it was found to have slightly decreased since 2016. It was found that the NLM technique was most frequently used on brain images taken using the general MR imaging technique; these were most frequently performed during simultaneous real and simulated experimental studies. In particular, comparison parameters were frequently used to evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm on MR images. The ultimate goal is to provide an accurate method for the diagnosis of disease, and our conclusion is that the NLM noise reduction algorithm is a promising method of achieving this goal.

Industrial high-energy X-ray imaging systems are widely used for non-destructive testing (NDT) to detect defects in the internal structure of objects. Research on X-ray image noise reduction techniques using image processing has been widely conducted with the aim of improving the detection of defects in objects. In this paper, we propose a non-local means (NLM) denoising algorithm to improve the quality of images obtained using an industrial 3 MeV high-energy X-ray imaging system. We acquired X-ray images using various castings and assessed the performance visually and by obtaining the intensity profile, contrast-to-noise ratio, coefficient of variation, and normalized noise power spectrum. Overall, the quality of images processed by the proposed NLM algorithm is superior to those processed by existing algorithms for the acquired casting images. In conclusion, the NLM denoising algorithm offers an efficient and competitive approach to overcome the noise problem in high-energy X-ray imaging systems, and we expect the accompanying image processing software to facilitate and improve image restoration.

Although conventional denoising filters have been developed for noise reduction from digital images, these filters simultaneously cause blurring in the images. To address this problem, we proposed the fast non-local means (FNLM) denoising algorithm which would preserve the edge information of objects better than conventional denoising filters. In this study, we obtained thoracic computed tomography (CT) images from a male adult mesh (MASH) phantom modeled by computer and a five-year-old phantom to perform both the simulation study and the practical study. Subsequently, the FNLM denoising algorithm and conventional denoising filters, such as the Gaussian, median, and Wiener filters, were applied to the MASH phantom image adding Gaussian noise with a standard deviation of 0.002 and practical CT images. Finally, the results were compared quantitatively in terms of the coefficient of variation (COV), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and correlation coefficient (CC). The results showed that the FNLM denoising algorithm was more efficient than the conventional denoising filters. In conclusion, through the simulation study and the practical study, this study demonstrated the feasibility of the FNLM denoising algorithm for noise reduction from thoracic CT images.
