This basic research study was undertaken to use ecofriendly nanobubbles that can improve the electrokinetic remediation of copper-contaminated soil, as well as to determine that remediation efficiency. The nanobubbles were generated by using pressurized hydrogen gas, and the quantity of hydrogen gas bubble that remained over 14 days was measured. The generated nanobubbles were used as an enhancer to remove a heavy metal on contaminated soil, and their applicability was confirmed. A batch test was used to compare the remediation effects of nanobubbles and distilled water on copper-contaminated soil. The results proved that the nanobubbles are a proper desorption agent for copper-contaminated sand and clay specimens. The solid–liquid ratio and the contact time for desorption of the sand and clay were then respectively determined. A large amount of effluent was obtained from electrokinetic remediation of the sand sample after applying the nanobubbles as an enhancer. The remediation efficiency demonstrated with sand proved to be higher than that for clay. This greater efficiency was attributed to a wider specific surface area, demonstrating the potential use of the nanobubbles as an enhancer for soil contaminated by copper with a large amount of effluent outflow. It was also assumed to be affected by the moving capability of the nanobubbles in the soil layer. Thus, the nanobubbled water can be used to improve the removal of heavy metals from contaminated soils. An ecofriendly enhancer for electrokinetic remediation with a relatively large void ratio and fast flowrate was confirmed by the nanobubbles.

A study of the application of electrokinetic (EK) remediation and Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRB) using recyclable Foods Scrap Ash (FSA) in multiple contaminated soils was carried out. An FSA was chosen as a PRB fill material due to its highly efficient capacity for contaminant removal. Acetic acid and Brij30 were used as enhancers on copper and phenanthrene, respectively, to improve EK remediation performance in removing the heavy metal and organic contaminants. Copper adsorption in PRB was so substantial that the confirmed removal efficiency was 83.86–90.17% and the remaining amount was 105–212 mg. While a high removal efficiency of acetic acid was observed on copper in multiple contamination soils; the removal of phenanthrene was hardly detected and the recovery rate of the contaminant was low during pretreatment. Therefore; an additional study of pretreatment on the phenanthrene-contaminated kaolinite needs to be performed.

Most food waste is incinerated and reclaimed in Korea. Due to the development of industry, soil and groundwater pollution are serious. The purpose of this study was to study recycled materials and eco-friendly remediation methods to prevent secondary pollution after remediation. In this study, recycled food waste ash was filled in a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) and used as a heavy metal adsorption material. In situ remediation electrokinetic techniques (EK) and acetic acid were used. Electrokinetic remediation is a technology that can remove various polluted soils and pollutants, and is an economical and highly useful remediation technique. Thereafter, the current density increased constantly over time, and it was confirmed that it increased after electrode exchange and then decreased. Based on this result, the acetic acid was constantly injected and it was reconfirmed through the water content after the end of the experiment. In the case of both heavy metals, the removal efficiency was good after 10 days of operation and 8 days after electrode exchange, but, in the case of lead, it was confirmed that experiments are needed by increasing the operation date before electrode exchange. It was confirmed that the copper removal rate was about 74% to 87%, and the lead removal rate was about 11% to 43%. After the end of the experiment, a low pH was confirmed at x/L = 0.9, and it was also confirmed that there was no precipitation of heavy metals and there was a smooth movement by the enhancer and electrolysis after electrode exchange.

In recent years, with the escalation of food waste generation, stringent legal constraints on landfill usage and incineration have necessitated the exploration of alternative disposal methods, augmenting interest in diverse recycling strategies. Notably, carbonized food waste (CFW), a byproduct of food waste carbonization, has emerged as an efficacious adsorbent for pollutant removal. This study focuses on the application of in situ remediation techniques, specifically electrokinetic (EK) remediation combined with enhancers, to decontaminate soil afflicted with single or multiple heavy metals. The utilization of a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) infused with CFW aims to mitigate secondary environmental repercussions, including the propagation of contaminants in soil and groundwater. Experiments were conducted on clay samples contaminated with copper, lead, or a combination thereof. Observations revealed that the current density peaked during the initial 1–2 days of the experiment, experienced a resurgence post-electrode exchange, and subsequently diminished. The efficacy of metal removal was predominantly pronounced for copper, with remediation rates ranging from 85% to 92% in singly contaminated samples and 75% to 89% in dually contaminated samples after a 10-day treatment period, incorporating an electrode exchange on the eighth day. Conversely, the efficacy of lead removal was markedly lower, with rates of 0.6% to 33% in singly contaminated samples and 14% to 25% in combined contamination scenarios, suggesting the necessity for extended treatment durations. The post-experimental moisture content indicated successful enhancer injection. Additionally, pH measurements affirmed that heavy metals migrated effectively within the sample matrix, facilitated by the EK phenomenon after the electrode exchange. This study highlights the potential of CFW within PRBs for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils, although the removal efficiencies between different metals is variable, emphasizing the need for tailored approaches in the treatment of lead-contaminated environments.

The present study purpose was to identify the flow characteristics of the drainage filter considering the characteristics of the landfill site, and to study the basic technology for efficient remediation of heavy metals. To this end, copper heavy metal was selected in consideration of landfill characteristics, and a study on flow characteristics was conducted using hydrophobic coated capillary tubes and microparticles. It was confirmed that the flow rate decreased as the pH increased at the hydrophobic surface, and pH 4, 6, and 8 flowed similarly in the center of the capillary tube, but decreased at pH 10. In the bottom part, it moved at the slowest speed of 1~4 μm/s and middle of center moved 17~25 μm/s. There was little change in flow in the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) numerical analysis considering the surface contact angle, which is a hydrophobic characteristic, and the velocity coefficient was presented by regression analysis through the experimental results. In this way, the current study will be a basic examination of the selective remediation process of pH on hydrophobic coated surfaces.
