Fe-based amorphous coatings were prepared on the surface of 45 steel substrates via supersonic plasma spraying and laser cladding. The corrosion and wear behavior of the two different coatings were investigated. Compared with supersonic plasma spraying, laser cladding resulted in coatings with a relatively denser structure, lower porosity, less cracks, and a good metallurgical bond with the substrate. Thanks to these properties, coatings produced by laser cladding exhibit a higher ability to resist uniform corrosion and better friction and wear performance than plasma-sprayed coatings.

Oxides as one of the commonly activating fluxes used in active tungsten inert gas welding (A-TIG welding) can dramatically increase the penetration depth to 2–4 times that of conventional welding. Using the oscillation principle of inviscid fluid, a robust method is developed to measure the average surface tension of molten metal during A-TIG welding for four different oxide activating fluxes of B2O3, TiO2, SiO2, and MgO. The experimental results suggest that the oxygen released from the decomposition of oxides is the dominant factor contributing to the change of the surface tension, which can result in the change of the temperature coefficient from negative to positive and alter the Marangoni convection, leading to the increase in the penetration depth. However, oxygen of small amount or large amount has a negligible effect on the sign change of the temperature coefficient. For oxides of low melting points, the interaction between the electrons outside the arc and the neutral particles (atoms and molecules) formed from the dissolution of the oxides causes the constriction of the arc; for oxides of high melting points, the decrease of the spot area in the anode due to high resistivity of the oxides leads to the constriction of the arc.

Surface-nitrided layers of Ti–6Al–4V alloy were fabricated using a diode laser in pure and mixed gas atmospheres of nitrogen and argon. The surface morphology, microstructure, hardness, and cracks of the nitrided layers were investigated. In all gas atmospheres, the layers showed smooth and humped regions, and consisted of planar nitrogen titanium (TiN), dendrites, and acicular martensite. The surface roughness was improved dramatically as the nitrogen concentration of the atmosphere was diluted with argon. Overall, the hardness of the nitrided layer was greatest for pure nitrogen and it tended to decrease as the concentration of argon in the atmosphere increased. However, the hardness of the layer for pure nitrogen also decreased rapidly, from the surface to matrix, in comparison to the diluted nitrogen atmospheres. It was shown that the number and size of dendrites, which determine hardness, are controlled by the nitrogen concentration. The dendrites of the nitrided layer were denser and smaller in a pure nitrogen atmosphere, than in diluted nitrogen atmospheres. Longitudinal and transverse cracks were observed in the nitrided layers. These two types of cracks were decreased or even eliminated as the argon concentration of the nitrogen–argon atmosphere was increased. Therefore, by diluting the nitrogen atmosphere with argon, the nitrided layer properties, in terms of surface roughness and cracks, can be improved, but this may also cause a reduction in the layer hardness.

The 1060 aluminum and T2 copper were joined by the pulsed double electrode gas metal arc welding (DE-GMAW) brazing method by using four types of filler wires, namely pure aluminum (Al) ER1100, aluminum-magnesium (Al–Mg) ER5356, aluminum-silicon (Al–Si) ER4043, and Al–Si ER4047, respectively. The effects of different types of filler wires on intermetallic compounds, microhardness tensile strength, and conductivity of joints were investigated. The results showed that a lot of brittle intermetallic compounds laying in the copper side brazing interface zone were generated using pure Al, Al–Mg, and Al–Si filler wires, which caused the change of microhardness, tensile strength, and the conductivity of joints. Meanwhile, with the increase in Si elements contents for Al–Sifiller wires, the thickness of the intermetallic compound layers decreased obviously, which was only up to 3 µm and the conductivity of the joints decreased. In addition, the microhardness, tensile strength, and the conductivity of the joints, when using Al–Sifiller wires, was higher than that using pure Al and Al–Mg filler wires. Hence, in comparison to the pure filler wires and Al–Mg filler wires, the Al–Si filler wires were more suitable for Al–Cu joints by DE-GMAW as Si element content was lower.

The interaction between fatigue damage and hydrogen in TC4 welded joints was analyzed considering specimens with different pre-cycles. The fracture failure caused by hydrogen-induced fatigue damage was investigated using tensile testing and microstructural observations. The results indicate that increasing the number of pre-cycles increases the specimens’ initial dislocation density, enhancing the severity of the hydrogen-induced embrittlement phenomenon. The hydrogen-enhanced local plasticity mechanism, manifested by fracture along the grain boundary, dominates the tensile process in fatigue-damaged hydrogen-filled welded joints after 10,000 and 20,000 pre-cycles. After 30,000 pre-cycles, the hydrogen-enhanced decohesion mechanism dominates the tensile process, manifesting as a transgranular cleavage decoupling fracture.
