Rogério Simões graduated in Chemical Engineering from the University of Coimbra in 1984, participated in a specialization course in Paper Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Escola Superior d'Enginyeries Industrial de Terrassa in 1987, and received his PhD degree in Paper Engineering from the University of Beira Interior (UBI) in 1997. Since 2001, he has been Associate Professor at the Chemistry Department of UBI (previously Assistant and Assistant Professor), carrying out teaching and research activities. Rogério has been teaching several curricular units at graduate and MSc levels in
Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry and Paper Engineering, in the areas of chemical reaction engineering, transport phenomena and projects, in addition to pulp and papermaking science and technology. In the area of research, he deepens and applies his know-how of chemical reaction engineering and transfer phenomena in pulping and bleaching processes, including enzymatic processes, as well as industrial wastewater treatment. Regarding cellulosic materials, his main research interests are the relationships between the morphological and physicochemical characteristics of wood fibers (including nanofibrillated cellulose), the processing conditions, and the corresponding properties of the final products (paper, cellulosic films, cellulosic filaments, etc.). He is the coordinator of the Fibrous Materials Chemistry group at the FibEnTech Research Unit.
