Quantifying the quality of upper limb movements is fundamental to the therapeutic process of patients with cerebral palsy (CP). Several clinical methods are currently available to assess the upper limb range of motion (ROM) in children with CP. This paper focuses on identifying and describing available techniques for the quantitative assessment of the upper limb active range of motion (AROM) and kinematics in children with CP. Following the screening and exclusion of articles that did not meet the selection criteria, we analyzed 14 studies involving objective upper extremity assessments of the AROM and kinematics using optoelectronic devices, wearable sensors, and low-cost Kinect sensors in children with CP aged 4–18 years. An increase in the motor function of the upper extremity and an improvement in most of the daily tasks reviewed were reported. In the population of this study, the potential of wearable sensors and the Kinect sensor natural user interface as complementary devices for the quantitative evaluation of the upper extremity was evident. The Kinect sensor is a clinical assessment tool with a unique markerless motion capture system. Few authors had described the kinematic models and algorithms used to estimate their kinematic analysis in detail. However, the kinematic models in these studies varied from 4 to 10 segments. In addition, few authors had followed the joint assessment recommendations proposed by the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB). This review showed that three-dimensional analysis systems were used primarily for monitoring and evaluating spatiotemporal variables and kinematic parameters of upper limb movements. The results indicated that optoelectronic devices were the most commonly used systems. The joint assessment recommendations proposed by the ISB should be used because they are approved standards for human kinematic assessments. This review was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42021257211).

Impedance measuring acquisition systems focused on breast tumor detection, as well as image processing techniques for 3D imaging, are reviewed in this paper in order to define potential opportunity areas for future research. The description of reported works using electrical impedance tomography (EIT)-based techniques and methodologies for 3D bioimpedance imaging of breast tissues with tumors is presented. The review is based on searching and analyzing related works reported in the most important research databases and is structured according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) parameters and statements. Nineteen papers reporting breast tumor detection and location using EIT were systematically selected and analyzed in this review. Clinical trials in the experimental stage did not produce results in most of analyzed proposals (about 80%), wherein statistical criteria comparison was not possible, such as specificity, sensitivity and predictive values. A 3D representation of bioimpedance is a potential tool for medical applications in malignant breast tumors detection being capable to estimate an ap-proximate the tumor volume and geometric location, in contrast with a tumor area computing capacity, but not the tumor extension depth, in a 2D representation.

Oil and gas pipeline networks require the periodic inspection of their infrastructure, which can cause gas and oil leakage with several damages to the environment and human health. For this, non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques of low-cost and easy implementation are required. An option is the metal magnetic memory (MMM) method, which could be used for real-time monitoring defects of ferromagnetic structures based on the analysis of self-magnetic leakage fields distribution around each defect. This method only requires magnetic sensors with high resolution and a data processing system. We present a measurement system of tangential and normal MMM signals of three rectangular defects of an ASTM A-36 steel pipe. This system is formed by a magnetoresistive sensor, an Arduino nano and a virtual instrumentation. The measured magnetic signals have non-uniform distributions around the rectangular defects, which have small differences with respect to the results obtained of a 2D magnetic dipole model. The size of each rectangular defect is related to the amplitude and shape of its tangential and normal MMM signals. The proposed system could be used for real-time monitoring of the size and location of rectangular defects of ferromagnetic pipes. This system does not require expensive equipment, operators with high skill level or a special treatment of the ferromagnetic samples.

Aeroponics is a soilless cultivation technology integrating plant nutrition, physiology, ecological environment, agricultural automation and horticulture. One of the soilless advantages is that a non-invasive observation of the root system growth development is possible. This paper presents a vegetative growth evaluation of lettuce plants in an aeroponic chamber, where root and leaf development parameters were measured in three lettuce crops through plant images captured in the visible (VIS), near infrared (NIR) and far infrared (IR) spectra. A total of ninety lettuce plants was transplanted for this research, thirty for each experimental crop. The three lettuce crops were grown for thirty days in an aeroponic growth plant chamber inside a greenhouse under favorable conditions. The morphometric and thermal parameters of the lettuce roots (perimeter, area, length and average temperature) and leaves (perimeter, area and average temperature) were evaluated for each crop along ten image-capturing sessions through an implemented multispectral vision system. The average values of the root and leaf morphometric parameters obtained with the implemented imaging system along the lettuce growing period were statistically analyzed with Tukey testing. The obtained analysis results show no significant difference for a value of p ≤ 0.05 in 86.67%. Hence, the morphometric parameters can be used to characterize the vegetative lettuce growth in aeroponic crops. On the other hand, a correlation analysis was conducted between the thermal parameters computed with the root and leaf thermal image processing and the measured ambient temperature. The results were: R = 0.945 for correlation between ambient and leaf temperature, R = 0.963 for correlation between ambient and root temperature and R = 0.977 for leaf and root temperature. According to these results, the plant temperature is highly correlated with the ambient temperature in an aeroponic crop. The obtained study results suggest that multispectral image processing is a useful non-invasive tool to estimate the vegetative root and leaf growth parameters of aeroponic lettuce plants in a greenhouse.

Convolutional neural networks (CNN) have turned into one of the key algorithms in machine learning for content classification of digital images. Nevertheless, the CNN computational complexity is considerable larger than classic algorithms, thus, CPU- or GPU-based platforms are generally used for CNN implementations in many applications, but often do not fulfill portable requirements due to resources, energy and real-time constrains. Therefore, there is a growing interest on real time processing solutions for object recognition using CNNs mainly implemented on embedded systems, which are limited both in resources and energy consumption. An updated review of prominent reported approaches for mapping CNNs onto embedded systems is described in this paper. Two main solutions trends for reducing the hardware CNN workload are distinguished through a deduced taxonomy. One is focused on algorithm level solutions to reduce the number of multiplications and CNN coefficients. On the other hand, hardware level solutions goal is to achieve processing time, power consumption and hardware resources reduction. Two dominant hardware level design strategies are pointed out as oriented to either reducing the energy consumption and resources utilization meeting real-time requirements or increasing the throughput at the expense of resources utilization. Finally, two identified design strategies for CNN hardware accelerators are proposed as opportunity research areas.
