Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are two major types of pollutants that interact with each other, but they are poorly understood. Polystyrene (PS) is one type of MPs that is often detected in aquatic environments. In this study, we examined the adsorption capacity and release rate of heavy metals with respect to different particle sizes of PS, heavy metals, initial heavy metal concentrations, and salinities. Virgin (new) PS with diameters of 20, 50, 130, and 250 μm was used in this study, and four heavy metals (lead, cadmium, copper, and zinc) were used. The results showed that larger PS particle sizes adsorbed more heavy metals even though it took longer to achieve equilibrium adsorption. An increase in heavy metal concentration caused the adsorption capacity (μg g–1) of PS particles to also increase, but the adsorption rate (%) decreased. Increased salinity of the heavy metal solution resulted in a slower adsorption time and a lower adsorption capacity and release rate from the surface of PS particles. Different heavy metals also had different adsorption capacities. Pb was consistently more highly adsorbed by MPs, followed by Cu, Zn, and Cd. Larger PS sizes released heavy metals faster than smaller PS sizes, and the amounts of heavy metals released were higher. The heavy metal with the highest release rate was Cd, followed by Pb, Cu, and Zn. Finally, our findings highlight the interactions between PS and heavy metals and strongly support that PS particles can act as vectors for heavy metals in aquatic systems.

This study investigated the changes in bioaccumulation, bioabsorption, photosynthesis rate, respiration rate, and photosynthetic pigments (phycoerythrin, phycocyanin, and allophycocyanin) of Sarcodia suiae following cadmium exposure within 24 h. The bioabsorption was significantly higher than the bioaccumulation at all cadmium levels (p < 0.05). The ratios of bioabsorption/bioaccumulation in light and dark bottles were 2.17 and 1.74, respectively, when S. suiae was exposed to 5 Cd2+ mg/L. The chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentration, oxygen evolution rate (photosynthetic efficiency), and oxygen consumption rate (respiratory efficiency) decreased with increasing bioaccumulation and ambient cadmium levels. The levels of bioaccumulation and bioabsorption in light environments were significantly higher than those in dark environments (p < 0.05). In addition, the ratios of phycoerythrin (PE)/Chl-a, phycocyanin (PC)/Chl-a, and allophycocyanin (APC)/Chl-a were also higher in light bottles compared to dark bottles at all ambient cadmium levels. These results indicated that the photosynthesis of seaweed will increase bioaccumulation and bioabsorption in a cadmium environment.

Seventeen organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were examined in surface sediments from Zhang River Estuary Mangrove National Natural Reserve, which is situated in the Fujian province in southeast China. The range of ∑OCPs concentration was 0.29–25.41 ng/g dry weight (average 4.53 ng/g), ∑HCHs was 0.008–0.906 ng/g dry weight (average 0.240 ng/g), and ∑DDTs was ND–4.743 (average 0.664 ng/g). The concentrations of the HCH isomers were observed in the following decreasing order: α-HCH > β-HCH > δ-HCH > γ-HCH, and that of the DDT isomers were as in the following order: p,p’-DDT > p,p’-DDE > p,p’-DDD. According to the analysis of the isomer ratios, γ-HCH (lindane) and endosulfan were rarely used recently around this mangrove forest. Instead, the ratios of (DDD+DDE)/DDT showed that DDTs were still illegally used. Compared with other mangroves in China, the residue level and ecological risk of the OCPs in surface sediment from ZREMNNR are both at a low level. Based on stepwise regression analysis, current fruit planting, as well as mariculture in developed areas and vegetable planting in developing areas, had a positive relation with DDT residues in mangrove sediment in China. Oppositely, HCH residues in mangrove sediment were derived from historical consumption, and generally the higher levels occurred in the developed areas. Through this study, we help to close the knowledge gap of OCPs in China’s mangroves and provide a possible management implication for sustainable development in the future.

Microplastics and heavy metals are the two main contaminants that are often found in aquatic environments and can lead to major issues for aquatic organisms. Polystyrene (PS) is a type of microplastic that is commonly found in aquatic environments. Hard clams are one of the organisms that are often used as a bioindicator of water pollution, and they can live in a certain salinity range. The objective of this study is to investigate the potential of PS particles as heavy metal vectors in M. lusoria influenced by differences in salinity. The result showed that the highest increase in concentrations of all heavy metals in hard clams was found in those placed at higher salinities. Hard clams that were placed at higher salinity required more water, allowing more PS particles to enter the clams’ bodies. Hard clams placed at salinity 30‰ always gathered significantly more PS particles (p<0.05) than hard clams placed at the other two salinities (20 and 25‰). This is also corroborated by water depletion at a salinity of 30‰, which is significantly higher (p<0.05) than the other two salinities. Our findings indicate that PS particles have the potential as vectors for heavy metal pollutants in hard clams in environments of varying salinity.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) monitoring and management in typical semi-enclosed bays is a major global environmental issue. This study concentrated on a questionnaire survey and analysis of marine environmental management and monitoring departments at all levels in China, and proposed suggestions on the construction and improvement of POPs monitoring and management system. Results show that POPs are initially involved in China’s current marine environmental monitoring system, and the monitoring strength and capability still need to be continuously improved, mainly in the recognition, funding input, relevant standards, monitoring, and evaluation technical regulations of marine environmental POPs monitoring. Therefore, in order to gradually improve the monitoring and management system of China’s offshore marine environment POPs, this study suggests starting from four directions: (1) Building POPs monitoring system of a marine ecological environment, and strengthening POPs monitoring in different environmental media; (2) strengthening land-based POPs emission and the related human activities’ intensity survey, and establishing a POPs information sharing database; (3) optimizing POPs monitoring technology in the marine environment, and improving POPs supervision and management technical support system; and (4) participating in regional and international marine environment POPs monitoring and evaluation projects, and strengthening the construction of talent teams.
