The aim of this study was to investigate if electric arc furnace (EAF) slag generated during steel production could have an application as a soil enhancer in agriculture. For that purpose, a greenhouse experiment was conducted on common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) cultivated in soil enriched with EAF slag (at 1% and 2% level), synthetic fertilizer (NPK), combined EAF slag and synthetic fertilizer, or in control (untreated) soil. The beans were exposed to test soils until maturity (for 8 weeks). Following that period, physico-chemical properties of the soils, as well as nutrient status, growth, photosynthetic and oxidative stress parameters of bean plants were determined. EAF slag improved the mineral status of the soil and significantly increased Fe, Mg, N, P and K in different bean plant organs. EAF slag and/or NPK increased plant height. EAF slag, especially at lower levels, positively affected dry weight of leaf and seed. Soil supplementation with a lower level of EAF slag, as well as with a combination of EAF slag and NPK, led to significant improvement in gas exchange parameters (net photosynthetic rate, intercellular CO2 concentration and stomatal conductance) and nitrate reductase activity, indicating a positive influence on bean plants. Potential phytotoxicity of EAF slag was not detected, as evidenced by the oxidative stress parameters. Thus, EAF slag applied at a low level shows promising potential as an efficient soil enhancer, and as a valuable source of nutrients essential to plants, with an equal or even better performance compared to synthetic fertilizer.

Global warming and the associated climate change are imposing abiotic stress on plants. Abiotic factors are crucial for plant productivity, survival, and reproduction. Eight sunflower hybrids were tested in conditions of different water availability and with combinations of different temperatures and irradiation. The changes in the photosynthetic efficiency were measured in the morning (control conditions: 2013, 25.8 °C and 349.1 W m−2; 2014, 21.8 °C and 296.4 W m−2) and afternoon (the combination of increased temperatures and high irradiation: 2013, 34 °C and 837.9 W m−2; 2014, 29.4 °C and 888.9 W m−2) at a flowering stage in rainfed or irrigated conditions. The measurement time (morning and afternoon conditions) had a statistically significant effect on all the tested parameters. The performance index (PIABS) in 2013 and the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (TR0/ABS) in 2014 are the only parameters significantly affected by the irrigation. As a result of the combined effect of increased temperatures and high irradiation, PIABS values decreased by 73–92% in rainfed conditions and by 63–87% in irrigated conditions in 2013, depending on the hybrid, while in 2014, the decrease varied between 70 and 86%. The TR0/ABS decrease was 7–17% in 2013, depending on the hybrid, and 6–12% in 2014, both in rainfed and irrigated conditions. The principal component analysis confirmed the effect of the combination of increased temperatures and high irradiation on hybrids, sorting them exclusively according to the time of measurement. All investigated parameters highly fluctuated between hybrids but without observable trends for the morning and afternoon conditions, as well as for irrigation. Plants’ reaction to the combination of increased temperatures and high irradiation manifested as a change in their photosynthetic efficiency, i.e., the photosynthetic apparatus’ functioning was impaired.

The selection of drought-tolerant sour cherry genotypes is essential for developing sustainable fruit production in today’s climate-change conditions. The phenotypic heterogenic population of sour cherry Oblačinska, with high and regular yield suitable for mechanical harvesting and industrial processing, is a traditional and predominant cultivar in northern Croatia (Pannonian region) and Serbia commercial orchards. In this context, 2-year old virus-free sour cherry plants of 4 isolated Oblačinska sour cherry ecotypes (OS, 18, D6, and BOR) produced by micropropagation were exposed to severe drought in a greenhouse under semi-controlled conditions to evaluate its photosynthetic intra-varietal variability. Relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF), and photosynthetic pigments were evaluated during the ten days of the experiment. As a visible symptom of stress, the withering of plants was followed by a diminution of RWC and photosynthetic pigments in the drought exposed leaves of sour cherry ecotypes compared to the control treatment. ChlF elucidated variability in the photosynthetic efficiency within studied sour cherry ecotypes, highlighting PIABS, PItotal, and ψE0 as the most sensitive and thus the most informative JIP parameters for drought screening. Among the investigated ecotypes, BOR proved to be the most sensitive. The Oblačinska sour cherry ecotype OS showed the highest tolerance to drought conditions and, therefore, can be used as a source of tolerance in sour cherry breeding programs.

Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) is a widespread Mediterranean woody species. Needles usually fall off the tree after the second year, which can be the reason for substantial crown defoliation under extreme environmental stress. The aim of the present investigation was to compare the anatomy, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic performance in current-year (CY) and previous-year (PY) Aleppo pine needles. Chlorophyll concentrations were determined spectrophotometrically, while photosynthetic performance was determined by measuring the increase in chlorophyll a fluorescence (the JIP test). The obtained results revealed that concentrations of chlorophylls a and b were almost twice as great in PY needles as in CY ones. The chlorophyll a to b ratio and values of the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) showed no statistically significant difference between CY and PY needles. However, the performance index (PIABS) was significantly higher in CY needles compared to PY ones. Analysis of PIABS components revealed that CY needles had increased electron transport beyond the primary electron acceptor, QA -, which was associated with a lower value of variable fluorescence at 2 ms (VJ) in comparison with PY needles. Also, some differences were observed in needle anatomy. Current-year needles had an increased proportion of mesophyll tissue, together with decreased proportions of vascular cylinder and resin duct areas. Also, many more starch grains were present in PY than in CY needles. Based on the presented results, it can be concluded that despite considerably lower chlorophyll content, CY needles exhibited photosynthetic performance better than that of older needles, which is an unusual phenomenon in woody species.

Satsuma mandarin is a non-climacteric fruit with limited storage potential, as dehydration and physiological stress can accelerate postharvest quality loss. This study evaluated the combined effects of hot-water dips (HWD; 48 °C or 52 °C for 3 min) and cold storage temperatures (1 °C or 3 °C for 8 weeks, followed by 7 days at 18–20 °C) on ‘Owari’ (Citrus unshiu Marc.) fruit quality and peel oxidative status. HWD reduced weight loss compared with untreated fruit at both temperatures, and total weight loss at 1 °C was 17.85% (HWD 48) and 18.27% (HWD 52), compared with 22.26% in the control. Storage at 1 °C reduced fruit weight loss compared with 3 °C, while fruit stored at 3 °C retained higher juiciness. Peel hydrogen peroxide level was lower at 1 °C, with the lowest value in HWD 48 fruit (5.56 nmol g−1 FW). Lipid peroxidation increased after storage across treatments but was lowest in HWD 48 at 1 °C (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances 11.82 nmol g−1 FW). HWD 48 at 1 °C also maintained the highest α-tocopherol level (411.18 µg g−1 FW) and showed the highest catalase activity. Overall, HWD 48, combined with storage at 1 °C, provided the most favourable peel oxidative stability. However, the risk of chilling injury at low temperatures must be assessed using a defined scoring protocol before commercial recommendation.

In his masterpiece Musashi (1935), the author Eiji Yoshikawa depicts the birth of an ingenious swordsman and his spiritual evolution towards the final awakening (satori). While constructing the character of Miyamoto Musashi, Yoshikawa uses the elements of Zen Buddhist philosophy and describes Musashi's progress on his way of enlightenment through a series of direct personal insights (kensho) that precede satori. The paper aims to discuss and analyze Musashi's use of different types of swords that metaphorically suggest his personal and spiritual transformation from an untamed and uncultivated person to his ultimate enlightenment. Initially, Musashi fights with a wooden sword (bokken), which symbolizes his animalistic, rampant nature. As he progresses on the way of enlightenment, Musashi embraces the steel sword (katana), though he still uses bokken at times. The struggle between his wild and civilized nature culminates at the moment of kensho, when he starts fighting with two steel swords, which represents a true evolution that elevates him to the level of the Nietzschean Ubermensch. The final birth of Musashi as a Rinzaian "man of no rank" is the moment of his ultimate awakening, symbolically depicted when he again reaches for the wooden sword. This act unmasks his true Buddhist nature, thus suggesting Musashi's return to "oneself."
