Software-Defined Network (SDN) has become a promising network architecture in current days that provide network operators more control over the network infrastructure. The controller, also called as the operating system of the SDN, is responsible for running various network applications and maintaining several network services and functionalities. Despite all its capabilities, the introduction of various architectural entities of SDN poses many security threats and potential targets. Distributed Denial of Services (DDoS) is a rapidly growing attack that poses a tremendous threat to the Internet. As the control layer is vulnerable to DDoS attacks, the goal of this paper is to detect the attack traffic, by taking the centralized control aspect of SDN. Nowadays, in the field of SDN, various machine learning (ML) techniques are being deployed for detecting malicious traffic. Despite these works, choosing the relevant features and accurate classifiers for attack detection is an open question. For better detection accuracy, in this work, Support Vector Machine (SVM) is assisted by kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) with genetic algorithm (GA). In the proposed SVM model, KPCA is used for reducing the dimension of feature vectors, and GA is used for optimizing different SVM parameters. In order to reduce the noise caused by feature differences, an improved kernel function (N-RBF) is proposed. The experimental results show that compared to single-SVM, the proposed model achieves more accurate classification with better generalization. Moreover, the proposed model can be embedded within the controller to define security rules to prevent possible attacks by the attackers.

Internet of Things (IoT) has been the most emerging technology in the last decade because the number of smart devices and its associated technologies has rapidly grown in both industrial and research prospectives. The applications are developed using IoT techniques for real-time monitoring. Due to low processing power and storage capacity, smart things are vulnerable to the attacks as existing security or cryptography techniques are not suitable. In this study, we initially review and identify the security and privacy issues that exist in the IoT system. Second, as per blockchain technology, we provide some security solutions. The detailed analysis, including enabling technology and integration of IoT technologies, is explained. Finally, a case study is implemented using the Ethererum-based blockchain system in a smart IoT system and the results are discussed.

The exponential growth in the number of connected devices as well as the data produced from these devices call for a secure and efficient access control mechanism that can ensure the privacy of both users and data. Most of the conventional key management mechanisms depend upon a trusted third party like a registration center or key generation center for the generation and management of keys. Trusting a third party has its own ramifications and results in a centralized architecture; therefore, this article addresses these issues by designing a Blockchain-based distributed IoT architecture that uses hash chains for secure key management. The proposed architecture exploits the key characteristics of the Blockchain technology, such as openness, immutability, traceability, and fault tolerance, to ensure data privacy in IoT scenarios and, thus, provides a secure environment for communication. This article also proposes a scheme for secure and efficient key generation and management for mutual authentication between communication entities. The proposed scheme uses a one-way hash chain technique to provide a set of public and private key pairs to the IoT devices that allow the key pairs to verify themselves at any time. Experimental analysis confirms the superior performance of the proposed scheme to the conventional mechanisms.

Power quality (PQ) has become an important topic in today’s power system scenario. PQ issues are raised not only in normal three-phase systems but also with the incorporation of different distributed generations (DGs), including renewable energy sources, storage systems, and other systems like diesel generators, fuel cells, etc. The prevalence of these issues comes from the non-linear features and rapid changing of power electronics devices, such as switch-mode converters for adjustable speed drives and diode or thyristor rectifiers. The wide use of these fast switching devices in the utility system leads to an increase in disturbances associated with harmonics and reactive power. The occurrence of PQ disturbances in turn creates several unwanted effects on the utility system. Therefore, many researchers are working on the enhancement of PQ using different custom power devices (CPDs). In this work, the authors highlight the significance of the PQ in the utility network, its effect, and its solution, using different CPDs, such as passive, active, and hybrid filters. Further, the authors point out several compensation strategies, including reference signal generation and gating signal strategies. In addition, this paper also presents the role of the active power filter (APF) in different DG systems. Some technical and economic considerations and future developments are also discussed in this literature. For easy reference, a volume of journals of more than 140 publications on this particular subject is reported. The effectiveness of this research work will boost researchers’ ability to select proper control methodology and compensation strategy for various applications of APFs for improving PQ.

This paper deals with measuring the Air Quality using MQ135 sensor along with Carbon Monoxide CO using MQ7 sensor. Measuring Air Quality is an important element for bringing awareness to take care of the future generations and for a healthier life. Based on this, Government of India has already taken certain measures to ban Single Stroke and Two Stroke Engine based motorcycles which are emitting high pollution. We are trying to implement a system using IoT platforms like Thingspeak or Cayenne in order to bring awareness to every individual about the harm we are doing to our environment. Already, New Delhi is remarked as the most pollution city in the world recording Air Quality above 300 PPM. We have used easiest platform like Thingspeak and set the dashboard to public such that everyone can come to know the Air Quality at the location where the system is installed. Machine Learning analysis brings us a lot of depth in understanding the information that we obtained from the data. Moreover, we are proviing a reducement of the cost of components versus the state of the art.

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has evolved as a research field that transforms human lifestyle from traditional to sophisticated. In IoT, the network plays a crucial role in collecting data from sensors and moving to the sink. Increasing the network lifetime is a challenging task in IoT, which is connected to devices that are limited by resource. Clustering is one of the effective methods of increasing the network lifetime. However, improper cluster head (CH) selection easily drains the energy early in network nodes. With the aim to overcome the issue, this paper proposes the Type-2 Fuzzy Logic-based Particle Swarm Optimization (T2FL-PSO) algorithm to select the optimal CH to extend the network lifetime. The T2FL is highly useful in providing the accurate solution in uncertain network environments. Hence, T2FL is applied on the network parameters, residual energy, and the distance between sensor node and base station to determine the fitness value. Later, virtual clusters are formed on the basis of distance between sensor node and CH and between node and base station. To validate the performance of the proposed T2FL-PSO algorithm, extensive simulations are carried out using MATLAB 2019a. Furthermore, the proposed T2FL-PSO algorithm is compared with Particle Swarm Optimization Clustering (PSO-C) and Particle Swarm Optimization Wang Zhang (PSO-WZ). The result confirms that the proposed T2FL-PSO increases the network lifetime by 10%–15% and the packet transmission ratio by 10%. Compared with similar algorithms, the proposed T2FL-PSO also causes a higher increase of network lifetime.
