The article presents experimental and numerical studies of bird models during impacts with rigid and deformable targets. The main aim of the studies is the validation of bird models in order to prepare them for the numerical simulation of bird impact against aircraft windshields and other parts of aircraft, thus improving the air transportation safety by providing cost-effective solutions for designing bird strike-resistant aircraft. The experimental investigations were conducted with a special set-up of a gas gun equipped with high-speed cameras, tensiometers and force sensors. The simulations were developed on the basis of LS-DYNA software by means of the SPH method for the bird model shape of the cylinder with hemispherical endings at the speed of 116 m/s. The results of studies into such things as the impact force, pressure and bird model deformation were compared. Moreover, the authors’ and other researchers’ results were assessed. It can be noted that the curves of the impact force obtained as a result of the numerical analysis correlated well with the experimental ones.

This paper presents the concept of precise navigation based on SBAS technology and CORS stations. In a kinematic test, three rover Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, properly spaced relatively to each other, were used in order to estimate reliable and redundant GPS/EGNOS positions. Next, the Kalman filter was employed to give the final solution. It was proven that EGNOS positioning allows to obtain an accuracy in the range of about 0.5–1.5 m. The proposed solution involving the use of three mobile receivers and Kalman filtering allowed to reduce the 3D error to a level below 0.3 m. Such an accuracy was achieved using only GPS L1 code observations and EGNOS corrections. Additionally, a reliable monitoring of quality of GPS/EGNOS positioning in the test area based on CORS stations was presented.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is focused on implementation of Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) technique in civil aviation for recovery of aircraft position using Precise Point Positioning (PPP) method in kinematic mode. Design/methodology/approach: The aircraft coordinates of Cessna 172 plane in XYZ geocentric frame were obtained based on GLONASS code and phase observations for PPP method. The numerical computations were executed in post-processing mode in the RTKPOST module in RTKLIB program. The mathematical scheme of equation observation of PPP method was solved using Kalman filter in stochastic processing. Findings: In paper, the average accuracy of aircraft position is about 0.308 m for X coordinate, 0.274 m for Y coordinate, 0.379 m for Z coordinate. In case of the mean radial spherical error (MRSE) parameter, the average value equals to 0.562 m. In paper, the accuracy of aircraft position in BLh geodesic frame were also showed and described. Research limitations/implications: The PPP method can be applied for determination the coordinates of receiver, receiver clock bias, Zenith Wet Delay (ZWD) parameter and ambiguity term for each satellite. Practical implications: The PPP method is a new technique for aircraft positioning in air navigation. The PPP method can be also used in receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) module in aircraft-based augmentation system (ABAS) system in air transport. The typical accuracy for recovery the aircraft position is about cm ÷ dm level using the PPP method. Social implications: The paper is destined for people who work in area of geodesy, navigation, aviation and air transport. Originality/value: The work presents the original research results of implementation the GLONASS satellite technique for recovery the aircraft position in civil aviation. Currently, the presented research PPP method is used in precise positioning of aircraft in air navigation based on global positioning system and GLONASS solutions.

The Satellite Base Augmentation System (SBAS) - EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) has been certified for Safety of Life (SoL) service for aircraft navigation since 2nd of March 2011. Unfortunately for the territory of Poland, located at the edge of EGNOS service area, the quality of the service corrections are still not sufficient for aircraft navigation requirements. Years 2012 and 2013 are forecasted as a maximum of solar activity in a 11-year solar cycle. This time period will be the chance to perform the first tests for the EGNOS Safety of Life service quality in disturbed ionospheric conditions. During the previous maximum of solar activity, the storm on 30 October 2003 resulted in the inability to use WAAS corrections for more than 12 hours. This was caused by a very large gradient of disturbances and its’ very sharp boundaries - vertical TEC (VTEC) varied from ~ 40 to ~ 120 TECU (TEC units) within an hour (over ~ 150 km distance). These circumstances gave the opportunity to carry out the test flights to examine the navigation parameters obtained for EGNOS SoL service in disturbed ionospheric conditions. The paper presents project proposal of study and analyses of such fundamental navigation parameters as: accuracy of determined position, availability, continuity and integrity, determined for selected disturbances in relation to quiet conditions. It can give a possibility to estimate of the quality of EGNOS SoL service in Polish airspace during the different phases of flight and its resistance to critical ionospheric conditions.

The main aim of this paper is to present the results of research on the application of a modified mathematical model to determine the quality parameters of SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) satellite positioning in aviation. The authors developed a new calculation strategy to determine the resultant values of the parameters of accuracy, continuity, availability and integrity of SBAS positioning. To achieve it, a weighted mean model was used for the purposes of developing a mathematical algorithm to determine the resultant values of SBAS positioning. The created algorithm was implemented for two SBAS supporting systems, i.e., EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) and SDCM (System of Differential Correction and Monitoring). The algorithm was tested in a flight test conducted with a Diamond DA 20-C airplane in north-eastern Poland in 2020. The conducted research revealed that the resultant error of the position in 3D space determined with use of the proposed weighted mean model improved by, respectively, 1–7% in comparison to the standard arithmetic mean model and by 1–37% in comparison to a single SBAS/EGNOS solution. Moreover, the application of the Multi-SBAS positioning algorithm results in an increase in the nominal results of continuity and availability by 50% in comparison to the arithmetic mean model. Apart from that, the values of the integrity parameters determined with use of the proposed weighted mean model improved by 62–63% in comparison to the standard arithmetic mean model.

In this paper a new mathematical algorithm is proposed to improve the accuracy of DGPS (Differential GPS) positioning using several GNSS (Global Navigation Satellites System) reference stations. The new mathematical algorithm is based on a weighting scheme for the following three criteria: weighting in function of baseline (vector) length, weighting in function of vector length error and weighting in function of the number of tracked GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites for a single baseline. The algorithm of the test method takes into account the linear combination of the weighting coefficients and relates the position errors determined for single baselines. The calculation uses a weighting scheme for three independent baselines denoted as (1A,2A,3A). The proposed research method makes it possible to determine the resultant position errors for ellipsoidal BLh coordinates of the aircraft and significantly improves the accuracy of DGPS positioning. The analysis and evaluation of the new research methodology was checked for data from two flight experiments carried out in Mielec and Dęblin. Based on the calculations performed, it was found that in the flight experiment in Mielec, due to the application of the new research methodology, DGPS positioning accuracy improved from 55 to 94% for all the BLh components. In turn, in the flight experiment in Dęblin, the accuracy of DGPS positioning improved by 63–91%. The study shows that the highest DGPS positioning accuracy is seen when using weighting criterion II, the inverse of the square of the vector length error.
