In recent years, there has been growing interest in the use of computer-assisted technology for early detection of skin cancer through the analysis of dermatoscopic images. However, the accuracy illustrated behind the state-of-the-art approaches depends on several factors, such as the quality of the images and the interpretation of the results by medical experts. This systematic review aims to critically assess the efficacy and challenges of this research field in order to explain the usability and limitations and highlight potential future lines of work for the scientific and clinical community. In this study, the analysis was carried out over 45 contemporary studies extracted from databases such as Web of Science and Scopus. Several computer vision techniques related to image and video processing for early skin cancer diagnosis were identified. In this context, the focus behind the process included the algorithms employed, result accuracy, and validation metrics. Thus, the results yielded significant advancements in cancer detection using deep learning and machine learning algorithms. Lastly, this review establishes a foundation for future research, highlighting potential contributions and opportunities to improve the effectiveness of skin cancer detection through machine learning.

Currently, industry is undergoing an exponential increase in binary-based combinatorial problems. In this regard, metaheuristics have been a common trend in the field in order to design approaches to successfully solve them. Thus, a well-known strategy includes the employment of continuous swarm-based algorithms transformed to perform in binary environments. In this work, we propose a hybrid approach that contains discrete smartly adapted population-based strategies to efficiently tackle binary-based problems. The proposed approach employs a reinforcement learning technique, known as SARSA (State–Action–Reward–State–Action), in order to utilize knowledge based on the run time. In order to test the viability and competitiveness of our proposal, we compare discrete state-of-the-art algorithms smartly assisted by SARSA. Finally, we illustrate interesting results where the proposed hybrid outperforms other approaches, thus, providing a novel option to tackle these types of problems in industry.

Visual inspection remains a cornerstone of quality control in welded structures, yet manual evaluations are inherently constrained by subjectivity, inconsistency, and limited scalability. This study presents WeldVGG, a deep learning-based visual inspection model designed to automate weld defect classification using radiographic imagery. The proposed model is trained on the RIAWELC dataset, a publicly available collection of X-ray weld images acquired in real manufacturing environments and annotated across four defect conditions: cracking, porosity, lack of penetration, and no defect. RIAWELC offers high-resolution imagery and standardized class labels, making it a valuable benchmark for defect classification under realistic conditions. To improve trust and explainability, Grad-CAM++ is employed to generate class-discriminative saliency maps, enabling visual validation of predictions. The model is rigorously evaluated through stratified cross-validation and benchmarked against traditional machine learning baselines, including SVC, Random Forest, and a state-of-the-art architecture, MobileNetV3. The proposed model achieves high classification accuracy and interpretability, offering a practical and scalable solution for intelligent weld inspection. Furthermore, to prove the model’s ability to generalize, a test on the GDXray was performed, yielding positive results. Additionally, a Wilcoxon signed-rank test was conducted separately to assess statistical significance between model performances.

Preventive maintenance efforts for bridge infrastructure have proven to mitigate early deterioration and reduce the probability of severe damage. Modern research has focused on the employment of online data directly collected within the structures, provided by several novel devices that feed machine learning approaches that continuously measure structural health. However, several issues remain within the related fields. The constant evolution of ML techniques, for example, provides new potential lines of research. Furthermore, widespread validation through real-world test cases and the use of diverse bridge typologies (which can be interesting considering their distinct behaviors) remain limited. This article seeks to examine the advancements in structural health monitoring (SHM) employing machine learning methods for identifying structural damage in bridges over a 7-year period, with a particular focus on studies employing real bridge data. Present challenges and future research directions are assessed. This study offers valuable insights to researchers and academics conducting research in this field, providing a thorough summary of current developments and combining ML methods with the four most-investigated bridge types in case studies.

The manufacturing Cell Design Problem (MCDP) is a classical optimization problem that finds application in lines of manufacture. The problem consist in distributing machines in cells, where the parts processed by each machine travels in the production process in such a way that productivity is improved. To solve the MCDP we employ a novel metaheuristic, which is inspired by actions, attitudes, and conducts that people normally have in life, named Human behavior-based optimization (HBBO). An individual try to evolve in life by trying his best in order to be a better human being with a brilliant future, successful at life, and be an example for others. We couple the HBBO with Autonomous Search (AS), which allows the modification of internal components of our approach when exposed to changing external forces and opportunities. We compare our HBBO-AS with the classic HBBO and an implementation using IRace, which is a software package that allows us to automatize the configuration of an algorithm through automatic configuration procedures. Additionally, in order to test the competitiveness of our results, we compare with other algorithms proved to perform well solving the MCDP. We illustrate experimental results, where the proposed approach is able to obtain interesting performance and robustness in the 125 well-known instances of the MCDP.
