Accurate information of urban surface water is important for assessing the role it plays in urban ecosystem services under the content of urbanization and climate change. However, high-resolution monitoring of urban water bodies using remote sensing remains a challenge because of the limitation of previous water indices and the dark building shadow effect. To address this problem, we proposed an automated urban water extraction method (UWEM) which combines a new water index, together with a building shadow detection method. Firstly, we trained the parameters of UWEM using ZY-3 imagery of Qingdao, China. Then we verified the algorithm using five other sub-scenes (Aksu, Fuzhou, Hanyang, Huangpo and Huainan) ZY-3 imagery. The performance was compared with that of the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI). Results indicated that UWEM performed significantly better at the sub-scenes with kappa coefficients improved by 7.87%, 32.35%, 12.64%, 29.72%, 14.29%, respectively, and total omission and commission error reduced by 61.53%, 65.74%, 83.51%, 82.44%, and 74.40%, respectively. Furthermore, UWEM has more stable performances than NDWI’s in a range of thresholds near zero. It reduces the over- and under-estimation issues which often accompany previous water indices when mapping urban surface water under complex environmental conditions.

Change detection extracts change areas in bitemporal remote sensing images, and plays an important role in urban construction and coordination. However, due to image offsets and brightness differences in bitemporal remote sensing images, traditional change detection algorithms often have reduced applicability and accuracy. The development of deep learning-based algorithms has improved their applicability and accuracy; however, existing models use either convolutions or transformers in the feature encoding stage. During feature extraction, local fine features and global features in images cannot always be obtained simultaneously. To address these issues, we propose a novel end-to-end change detection network (EGCTNet) with a fusion encoder (FE) that combines convolutional neural network (CNN) and transformer features. An intermediate decoder (IMD) eliminates global noise introduced during the encoding stage. We noted that ground objects have clearer semantic information and improved edge features. Therefore, we propose an edge detection branch (EDB) that uses object edges to guide mask features. We conducted extensive experiments on the LEVIR-CD and WHU-CD datasets, and EGCTNet exhibits good performance in detecting small and large building objects. On the LEVIR-CD dataset, we obtain F1 and IoU scores of 0.9008 and 0.8295. On the WHU-CD dataset, we obtain F1 and IoU scores of 0.9070 and 0.8298. Experimental results show that our model outperforms several previous change detection methods.

Accurate and reliable farmland crop mapping is an important foundation for relevant departments to carry out agricultural management, crop planting structure adjustment and ecological assessment. The current crop identification work mainly focuses on conventional crops, and there are few studies on parcel-level mapping of horticultural crops in complex mountainous areas. Using Miaohou Town, China, as the research area, we developed a parcel-level method for the precise mapping of horticultural crops in complex mountainous areas using very-high-resolution (VHR) optical images and Sentinel-2 optical time-series images. First, based on the VHR images with a spatial resolution of 0.55 m, the complex mountainous areas were divided into subregions with their own independent characteristics according to a zoning and hierarchical strategy. The parcels in the different study areas were then divided into plain, greenhouse, slope and terrace parcels according to their corresponding parcel characteristics. The edge-based model RCF and texture-based model DABNet were subsequently used to extract the parcels according to the characteristics of different regions. Then, Sentinel-2 images were used to construct the time-series characteristics of different crops, and an LSTM algorithm was used to classify crop types. We then designed a parcel filling strategy to determine the categories of parcels based on the classification results of the time-series data, and accurate parcel-level mapping of a horticultural crop orchard in a complex mountainous area was finally achieved. Based on visual inspection, this method appears to effectively extract farmland parcels from VHR images of complex mountainous areas. The classification accuracy reached 93.01%, and the Kappa coefficient was 0.9015. This method thus serves as a methodological reference for parcel-level horticultural crop mapping and can be applied to the development of local precision agriculture.

The development of remote sensing and intelligent algorithms create an opportunity to include ad hoc technology in the heating route design area. In this paper, classification maps and heating route planning regulations are introduced to create the fitness function. Modifications of ant colony optimization and the cuckoo search algorithm, as well as a hybridization of the two algorithms, are proposed to solve the specific Zhuozhou–Fangshan heating route design. Compared to the fitness function value of the manual route (234.300), the best route selected by modified ant colony optimization (ACO) was 232.343, and the elapsed time for one solution was approximately 1.93 ms. Meanwhile, the best route selected by modified Cuckoo Search (CS) was 244.247, and the elapsed time for one solution was approximately 0.794 ms. The modified ant colony optimization algorithm can find the route with smaller fitness function value, while the modified cuckoo search algorithm can find the route overlapped to the manual selected route better. The modified cuckoo search algorithm runs more quickly but easily sticks into the premature convergence. Additionally, the best route selected by the hybrid ant colony and cuckoo search algorithm is the same as the modified ant colony optimization algorithm (232.343), but with higher efficiency and better stability.

Image segmentation plays a significant role in remote sensing image processing. Among numerous segmentation algorithms, the region-merging segmentation algorithm is widely used due to its well-organized structure and outstanding results. Many merging criteria (MC) were designed to improve the accuracy of region-merging segmentation, but each MC has its own shortcomings, which can cause segmentation errors. Segmentation accuracy can be improved by referring to the segmentation results. To achieve this, an approach for detecting and correcting region-merging image segmentation errors is proposed, and then an iterative optimization model is established. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: (1) The conflict types of matching segment pairs are divided into scale-expression conflict (SEC) and region-ownership conflict (ROC), and ROC is more suitable for optimization. (2) An equal-scale local evaluation method was designed to quantify the optimization potential of ROC. (3) A regional anchoring strategy is proposed to preserve the results of the previous iteration optimization. Three QuickBird satellite images of different land-cover types were used for validating the proposed approach. Both unsupervised and supervised evaluation results prove that the proposed approach can effectively improve segmentation accuracy. All explicit and implicit optimization modes are concluded, which further illustrate the stability of the proposed approach.

Detecting individual Populus euphratica (P. euphratica) trees in desert forest areas is crucial for monitoring their ecophysiological characteristics and ecological conservation. However, the presence of the spectral-similar Tamarix chinensis (T. chinensis) in the habitats, along with the densely overlapping crowns in clustered P. euphratica, presents a challenge for the task. This article proposes a method to detect individual P. euphratica in very high spatial resolution (VHR) images. First, the deep learning-based semantic segmentation model is used to differentiate between P. euphratica and T. chinensis. Second, the individual tree detection is converted into a constrained 2-D bin packing model and solved by a heuristic template matching and filling algorithm. The experimental data consist of a WorldView-2 image capturing sparse desert forests of the lower reaches of the Tarim River. The 22 296 individual P. euphratica trees were detected, achieving F1-scores of 0.885, 0.869, and 0.902 on three datasets with varying difficulty levels. Furthermore, experiments were conducted to compare with other methods, and the results showed that the proposed method achieved the best performance on all three datasets. The proposed method can be applied to map the distribution of individual P. euphratica trees in sparse desert forests and can provide methodological references for similar tasks related to individual tree detection in natural forests.
