The Romanian hidden champions were born in an economy that is catching up with the rest of the EU member states in terms of GDP per capita and productivity. The three hidden champions presented in this chapter are operating in industries with fast technological changes. They define the interconnected society that we all live in production of electronic devices with communication technologies, production of software, and provision of digital services for the marketing of companies. Their competitiveness in Romania represents a solid foundation for international expansion, all of them having proved their competitiveness on a global scale. Electra is selling electronic devices in Germany, Grapefruit is selling digital services to major global companies like Renault, Philip Morris or Pepsi and Romsoft is selling software to one of the world’s leading companies of lab medical devices. Although they have advantages in terms of labor costs, these are not the current drivers of competitiveness, as the companies rely more on the technical know-how of employees and the internal dynamics that rapidly generate new products or services, allowing the continuous expansion and growth of the business. All three hidden champions are direct beneficiaries of the simplicity of trading across borders in the EU and stand apart in the Romanian economic landscape in terms of human capital, business sophistication, and innovation.

Business education has been currently challenged by the fast introduction of online learning platforms for students enrolled in higher education who had been previously used only face-to-face interaction, raising questions about the sustainability of online education. This new learning environment creates a different path for students managing their knowledge, who, due to the influence of online experiences, could develop different skills with different outcomes for their chances of employment. This study analyses knowledge management of business students in an online education setting to discover its influence on students’ perception of both their general employment chances, and specifically in online businesses. To conduct the study, we opted for a quantitative research design based on a questionnaire applied between November and December of 2020, which resulted in valid responses from 256 Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree students. In line with the research hypotheses, correlation, reliability tests and logistic regression were used to perform data analysis. The results clearly indicate that students’ perception of their employment chances depend on the increasing score of knowledge acquisition, knowledge revision, conceptual change and knowledge application, independently and under the action of control variables. Additionally, knowledge application proved to be an important determinant for students’ perception of their employment chances in online businesses.

Knowledge flows are recognized as a determining factor in the development of the economy in general and the development of the bioeconomy in particular. The analysis of the literature has shown that one perspective from which the flows of knowledge must be analyzed is that of information from different sources, in order to find out if there are differences in the importance of these flows depending on the source of information used. This paper presents results of a research aiming to analyze these flows to determine the level of importance of these sources used by teachers and researchers from Romanian universities. Based on the answers to a questionnaire addressed to teachers and researchers from Romanian universities, from scientific fields associated with bioeconomy, with the help of a Principal Component Analysis, we identified a set of four components that explain the variations of their importance in the knowledge flows associated with the development of bioeconomy, through the use of different sources of information. The four components were named: Sources from the business environment; Scientific sources predominantly in English; Scientific sources in other languages (without English and mother tongue); Scientific sources in mother tongue (Romanian). Analysis of the importance attached to each type of source showed that scientific sources in English are the most important and that sources in the business environment are less important than scientific sources in English and Romanian. The least important ones were considered the sources in other languages, besides English and the mother tongue (Romanian in this case).

The aim of this study is to describe the relations between low demand, cash flow problems, employee dismissals, and temporary leaves experienced by Romanian companies during the economic lockdown in the first two months of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in Romania (16 March–16 May 2020). For this purpose, we conducted a quantitative study using descriptive, correlation, and regression analyses applied to data collected from company decision-makers. Our results show that demand for products/services and cash flow in companies has decreased significantly, the workforce being affected by dismissals and temporary leaves/furloughing. Additionally, the average linear revenue of companies has been decreasing due to insufficient cash flow, higher absenteeism of workers, customers having been affected, and the demand going down. Therefore, employee dismissals, employee temporary leaves (furlough), and dismissal intentions have been positively correlated with insufficient cash flow in companies and an extremely low demand.

In organizations, the knowledge creation remained an exclusive attribute of humans until the emergence of artificial intelligence. The role of information systems in organizations expanded continuously, including recording, organizing, processing, storage, dissemination and making available the information, until the revolutionary emergence of artificial intelligence. The role of knowledge creation is no longer exclusive to humans. Artificial intelligence becomes a partner entity of employees in knowledge creation processes in organizations. This article investigates how artificial intelligence can be incorporated in knowledge creation processes. Starting from the study of scientific literature, this article presents concepts and taxonomies associated with the use of artificial intelligence in the processes of knowledge creation in organizations. The study is a first step in a larger research, which aims to identify the main consequences, on employees and organizations, of the incorporation of artificial intelligence in the processes of knowledge creation.

Employees use mobile phones for several information processes at work, either in relation to their work or their personal life. This study uses descriptive statistics and regression analysis in order to identify which information processes are accessed by employees to reach their personal and professional goals when using mobile phones at work, using a sample of 368 professionals from different fields in Romania. The results of the study show that messaging applications (e-mail, sms, Messenger, Whatsapp, etc.) and searches for information on the Internet are the biggest time consumers for personal purposes, while telephone conversations (voice only) and searches for useful information on the Internet are the biggest consumers of working time for professional purposes. Based on the opinions of employees, we found that the most important effect of mobile phone use at work for personal purposes lies in the fact that it helps employees be more productive through a better work–life balance. The mobile phone was originally designed as a personal device, but today, since employers are allowing or requiring its use, during work, it is also used for professional purposes.

Mobile phone has become today a multi tasking tool, used in the work environment for both, personal and professional purposes. On the one hand, used for personal purposes, mobile phone can bring many benefits: it reduces stress, helps to schedule time after work, helps the employee to find useful information on the Internet, etc. On the other hand, mobile phone can also have negative effects when it is used at work for personal purposes: decreases productivity at work, distracts the attention, exposes to risks employees that are working in production, etc. In what concerns the professional purposes, the benefits depend of the nature of work: keeps constant connections with supervisors and clients, employees find quick information related to working tasks, and information can be shared at any time with colleagues, etc. Of course there are also negative effects of the mobile phone used at the workplace: disturbing the activity of colleagues, non-dissipation of information to others in a timely manner, etc. In this paper we present some preliminary results from a study that highlights both, professional and personal use of mobile phones in information processes at work. The research sample has 368 respondents from different fields of activity. Based on the frequency of their use, the results indicate that, for personal purposes, text messaging applications comes on the first place, search for useful information on the Internet comes on the second place and finally, the phone calls (voice only) are on the third position. For professional purposes, at work, most employees use phone calls (voice only), then they search for useful information on the Internet, and finally, they use messaging applications.

The present article describes the key elements of the workplace harassment issues in general and from the Romanian official documents and regulations perspective. The divergences between these regulations and the international approaches on workplace harassment are analysed, considering the practical implications for managers and human resources departments, in order to reveal the needs for adaptation of the Romanian official framework related to this issue. Findings show that treating the harassment as discrimination, and not as form of psychological violence, creates the biggest challenges for managers
