Short Biography

Sungeun Suh is an assistant professor for Fashion Design in the College of Art, Gachon University, with a Ph.D. in Aesthetics of Dress from Seoul National University and a BFA in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design, NYC. The research interests are the impact of new technologies such as social media on fashion, fashion communication, fashion as a cultural lifestyle, sustainable fashion, fashion thinking and creative fashion design.

This study qualitatively examines the “non-boundaries of style” represented in fashion on a social media platform. The term “non-boundary” refers to a nonlinear boundary or distinction based on the more flexible time and space in the digital era, rather than a space at a certain time. Based on a theoretical review of media ecology, that is, how the media environment transforms human experience and affects society and culture, the spatial and temporal aspects of digital platforms were characterized as transcendental, open social, realistic virtual, and aesthetic spaces in everyday lives. The fashion-related images from the Instagram account of global fashion influencer Susanna Lau (@susiebubble), uploaded from May 2012–June 2019, were then analyzed, including their titles, caption content, hashtags, and followers’ commentary. Analysis showed that the images represent a digital lifestyle and trace the non-boundaries of style across the binaries of work–leisure, public–private, real–virtual, and geography–culture.

This study qualitatively analyzes the phenomenon of fashion everydayness as a cultural revolution in the digital space as everyday life continues to expand into digital platforms. The analysis proceeded in four perspectives based on Lefebvre’s theoretical framework: the festivalization of everyday life, the artification of everyday life, the holistic stylization of everyday life, and cultural revolution as a daily practice. Instagram, the case for this study and the most popular image-centric social network, leads the digital aesthetics paradigm through creative acts that weave fashion into the daily life of the individual. The study focuses on three fashion mega-influencers whose successful careers began with blogs documenting their daily lives. The analysis showed that Instagram, as a social platform, is a creative space for sharing everyday life with its appropriation of time and space. In there, fashion visualizes the look of the everyday beyond the boundaries of time and space. In practice, it suggests a digital cultural revolution: a composite lifestyle expressive of various tastes and styles—a vital medium to inspire and sustain fashion everydayness. This has implications that the information and communication technology of the digital age created a new cultural space and that daily visualization through fashion will eventually produce sustainable cultural contents.

디지털 정보통신기술의 발전에 따라 최근 자가발전을 통한 에너지 수확, 저장, 전환은 스마트 패션제품개발에 있어서 중요한 방향성과 비전을 제시하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 에너지 하베스팅 기술을 적용한 패션제품의 개발현황을 살펴보고자 하였다. 선행연구를 통해 의류에 적용 가능한 에너지 하베스팅 기술의 대표적유형을 열전, 압전, 마찰전기, 광전, 전자기파의 5가지로 분류하고, 이를 구글과 네이버 및 관련 웹사이트에서한영 키워드로 검색하여 140여개의 상용화된 패션제품 사례를 도출, 유형 및 특징을 분석하였다. 현재 기술성숙도가 높고 가장 많은 상용화가 이루어진 에너지 하베스팅 기술은 태양전지로 의류 전반의 다양한 아이템에 적용·개발되고 있다. 압전 기술은 압전필름을 설치하여 소리파장에 의한 진동, 신체 움직임에서 발생하는 압력 등을 전기로 변환하는 제품, 열전은 주로 사람의 체온 변화를 감지하여 에너지로 변환이 가능한 손목시계나 밴드형에서 침낭, 신발 등, 마찰전기는 접촉대전 나노발전기를 삽입하여 사람의 불규칙한 신체 활동에서 수확한 에너지를 충전하는 제품 형태로 활발히 개발되고 있다. 전자기파는 패션제품화가 비교적 낮으나주변에 버려지는 전자기파유도 에너지를 텍스타일 안테나나 손목밴드 등의 저장장치에 수확하여 사용하는제품으로 나타나고 있다. 에너지 하베스팅에 대한 기술적 관심은 국내외에서 매우 크게 증가하고 있으나, 아직 본격적 상용화 개발은 미흡하기 때문에, 패션아이템으로서의 기능성과 실용성, 편리성, 그리고 무엇보다 트렌드 감각을 갖춘 심미성을 지닐 수 있는 기술적 접근과 사용자 중심의 디자인 개발이 중요하겠다. 패션커뮤니케이션의 확장으로써 패션 테크놀로지의 적용은 일상에서 친숙한 습관으로 다가오는 스마트 테크놀로지 트렌드, 일상의 건강과 웰빙을 추구하며 여가활동에 대한 높은 관심으로 부각된 에슬레져 트렌드, 그리고 친환경적 고부가가치의 그린디자인을 추구하는 지속가능 트렌드 등 시대적 메가트렌드에 부합하는 결과물로 도출되어야 할 것이다.
